Fix mouse clicks not working in MSFS 2024 by checking focus, freelook, interaction mode, bindings, controller conflicts and aircraft power.
Mouse clicks usually stop working in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 because the simulator has lost window focus, the camera is still in freelook, the mouse profile or primary-action binding is wrong, or a controller has taken cockpit focus. If menus still respond, check the cockpit interaction mode, aircraft power and that aircraft’s clickspots.
Fix mouse clicks in MSFS 2024 in this order
Work through these checks before resetting the simulator or reinstalling anything.
- Restore simulator focus. On PC, switch to another window and back, then click once inside the simulator. Close any toolbar panel, system overlay or pop-up that may be capturing input. On a console, dismiss overlays with the controller and return focus to the flight view.
- Exit freelook or mouse-look. Release any held camera button, toggle freelook off using its assigned control and reset the cockpit view. You cannot operate cockpit controls while the mouse is captured by the camera. If the pointer will not return, follow our checks for a stuck or missing cockpit camera binding.
- Test a simulator menu. Open the pause or settings screen and click an ordinary menu item. If menus also ignore clicks, suspect focus, the mouse connection or its control profile. If menus work, the fault is confined to cockpit interaction.
- Test the default mouse profile. Open the control settings, select the mouse and temporarily activate its default preset. Preserve your customised profile rather than overwriting it. A missing left-button action or conflicting camera assignment can make the pointer move normally while clicks do nothing.
- Change the cockpit interaction system. Switch between Legacy and Lock, apply the change and test again. Add-on aircraft built around traditional clickspots are often easier to operate in Legacy mode.
- Remove competing pointers. Temporarily disconnect a spare mouse, gamepad or VR controller. Also remove duplicate cockpit-cursor assignments from other devices. Reconnect them one at a time after the mouse works.
- Compare another aircraft. Load a standard aircraft in a powered, ready-to-fly state. If its switches work, the original aircraft, add-on or aircraft state is responsible. If nothing works anywhere, restart MSFS 2024 after restoring the default mouse profile.
Why does the mouse work in menus but not in the cockpit?
If menus accept clicks but the cockpit does not, Windows or the console is detecting the mouse correctly; the problem is camera capture, cockpit interaction settings, bindings or the aircraft itself.
Return to the internal cockpit view and place the pointer over several different controls. No highlight on any switch usually indicates the wrong interaction state or a damaged profile. A highlight means the clickspot is being detected, so concentrate on the required gesture and interaction mode instead.
Do not assume a cold-and-dark aircraft makes every control unclickable. An unpowered display or EFB may ignore touch input, but mechanical switches should still respond. For stubborn cockpit-wide failures, use our control-specific mouse troubleshooting.
What if a cockpit control highlights but will not move?
A highlighted control usually means the mouse is working but the selected interaction mode, gesture or click zone does not match that control.
| Interaction mode | Choose it when | Common gotcha |
|---|---|---|
| Legacy | You prefer conventional mouse clicks, wheel actions and dragging, or an add-on uses traditional clickspots. | Concentric knobs can have separate inner, outer and push zones that are easy to miss. |
| Lock | You want prominent highlighting and focused manipulation, particularly with controller-style input. | The control must be selected or locked before the movement shown by its prompt will work. |
Try the mouse wheel over rotary knobs, check both sides of a two-way switch and look for separate push and rotate zones. If every other control works, one dead clickspot is probably aircraft-specific rather than a global mouse fault.
Why do clicks fail only on Xbox or in VR?
On Xbox, controller focus, a USB connection or a console-specific mouse profile can prevent cockpit clicks even though the pointer moves.
Reconnect the mouse to a known working USB port, restore its default profile and temporarily remove cockpit-cursor bindings from the gamepad. Our Xbox mouse and controller-focus checks cover the console-specific failure modes.
In VR, make sure the desktop simulator window still has focus and disable any VR-controller pointer that is taking ownership of cockpit interaction. If the cursor disappears or remains visible but cannot click, follow the VR pointer and focus recovery steps.
Can the aircraft or EFB be the problem?
If mouse clicks fail in only one aircraft, one panel or the EFB, the global mouse configuration is probably not the cause.
- A black or dim EFB may need aircraft electrical power, avionics power or increased screen brightness.
- An add-on may use custom interaction code or expect Legacy mode.
- A switch may be guarded, decorative or unimplemented.
- An outdated or conflicting aircraft package can break its clickspots while standard aircraft remain usable.
Test the same action in a standard aircraft before changing global settings. Reinstallation should be the last resort: it may leave the faulty input profile untouched or restore it through profile synchronisation, while resetting only the mouse preset directly tests the more likely cause.
