Learn why MSFS 2024 live weather is inaccurate and fix UTC time, online data, stale sessions, METAR comparisons and add-on conflicts.
MSFS 2024 live weather can look inaccurate because it generates a continuous atmosphere from forecast-model data, observations and interpolation; it does not copy the latest airport METAR verbatim. Improve it by using live UTC time, confirming online weather is enabled, reloading stale sessions and removing any preset or add-on that overrides the weather.
Why does MSFS 2024 live weather not match the METAR?
A METAR is a time-stamped observation at one reporting station, whereas Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 must construct weather across the entire three-dimensional world. It blends observations with modelled conditions between stations, at altitude and over places with no reporting station.
This can produce correct pressure and broadly correct wind while the cloud coverage, visibility or precipitation looks different. METAR cloud groups describe coverage and base height, not the precise position, thickness or shape of every cloud. Our explanation of how Microsoft Flight Simulator sources and depicts weather covers that distinction in more detail.
| What you see | Likely cause | Best response |
|---|---|---|
| Wind and pressure are close, but clouds differ | Model interpolation and cloud rendering | Treat this as a depiction difference; use a preset when exact cloud layers matter |
| Conditions resemble an older report | Observation delay or a stale session | Check the METAR timestamp, then reload the flight |
| Weather is wrong alongside incorrect daylight | Local-time, UTC or date mismatch | Restore live date and time |
| Clear or unchanged weather everywhere | Online data disabled, a stuck session or a service fault | Restart the simulator and verify its online settings |
| Conditions change sharply near an airport | Transition between modelled and observed data | Allow the system to settle; check for a competing weather injector |
How should I compare live weather with real conditions?
Compare like with like before deciding that the simulator is wrong. A mistake we see constantly is comparing the sim with a newer METAR, a different airport or local clock time.
- Use the correct station. A small airfield may have no METAR and can differ materially from the nearest reporting airport, especially around hills, coasts and weather fronts.
- Read the UTC timestamp. METAR time is UTC, not the airport's local time. Make sure the observation applies to the period represented in your flight.
- Check equivalent measurements. METAR wind direction is reported relative to true north, pressure may be shown as QNH in hectopascals or inches of mercury, and cloud bases are heights above the aerodrome rather than indicated aircraft altitudes.
- Confirm the flight uses Live Weather and live time. A manually selected preset, Typical Weather, altered date or activity-defined weather will not necessarily reproduce present conditions.
- Compare operational details first. Surface wind, pressure, visibility and significant weather are better tests than expecting an identical cloud screenshot.
If any METAR groups are unclear, our practical METAR-reading guide for simmers explains timestamps, wind, visibility, clouds and pressure.
How do I refresh and improve MSFS 2024 live weather?
The most effective fix is to test a fresh Free Flight session with live time, online weather and no competing weather controller.
- Select Live Weather. Verify that the flight has not retained a preset and that a mission, activity or multiplayer event is not imposing its own conditions.
- Restore live date and time. A custom clock or date can make the atmosphere, daylight and latest observation disagree. Return both values to live rather than adjusting only the hour.
- Check online-data settings. Confirm that online functionality and live weather data are allowed. Menu wording can differ between platforms and simulator builds, but both the general online connection and weather service must be available.
- Start a new Free Flight. Return to the main menu and load the airport again. If that fails, close the simulator fully and restart it. On Xbox, do not rely on Quick Resume for this test.
- Remove weather conflicts. Do not run a third-party injector while also expecting the built-in system to control conditions. On PC, test without weather-related Community-folder add-ons and restore them one at a time.
- Test another reporting airport. If several widely separated locations all show identical clear weather, the problem is probably the data connection or service rather than local interpolation.
Clearing the rolling scenery cache is normally irrelevant because that cache does not store the live weather feed. If weather remains absent, frozen or globally clear, follow our full live-weather connection and stale-session checks.
Can MSFS 2024 live weather be made exactly accurate?
No weather mode can guarantee an exact visual copy of reality because observations are incomplete and the simulator must infer everything between them. Even a fresh METAR cannot specify individual cloud positions, turbulence throughout a layer or conditions between reporting stations.
Choose the weather source according to the flight:
- Built-in Live Weather: best for a coherent, changing atmosphere across an ordinary real-time flight.
- Custom preset: best for repeatable training or reproducing exact runway wind, pressure, visibility and cloud-base targets.
- Compatible weather add-on: useful when tighter station-based control or additional weather features matter, though it still works within the simulator's depiction limits.
Before installing another controller, check the relevant platform and configuration requirements; our MSFS 2024 ActiveSky compatibility guidance also explains why competing controllers and mismatched live or historical settings cause incorrect conditions.
