Fix ReShade not finding MSFS 2024 by selecting the correct executable, handling protected Xbox app folders and choosing the right DirectX API.
To fix ReShade when it cannot find Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, bypass the automatic application list and browse to the simulator’s real PC executable, normally FlightSimulator2024.exe. Select the DirectX 10/11/12 renderer, ensure the installer has write permission, and never target the launcher, shortcut, Community folder or Packages folder.
Which MSFS 2024 file should ReShade use?
ReShade must target the executable that renders Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, normally FlightSimulator2024.exe. Installation locations vary between Steam, the Xbox app and Microsoft Store installations, so a path copied from somebody else may be wrong.
The reliable way to identify it is to start MSFS 2024, find its process in Windows Task Manager and use Open file location. Note the location, then close the simulator before running the ReShade installer. Alternatively, use the game client’s manage or browse-local-files command.
A mistake we see constantly is selecting the Community or Packages directory because that is where MSFS add-ons are stored. Those folders contain simulator content, not the rendering executable, so ReShade cannot hook into them.
How do I make ReShade detect Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024?
- Close MSFS 2024. The simulator must not be running while ReShade writes its hook and configuration files.
- Locate the real executable. Use Task Manager or the installation-management controls in Steam or the Xbox app to find
FlightSimulator2024.exe. - Browse manually in ReShade. If MSFS 2024 is absent from the automatic application list, choose the browse option and select that executable directly.
- Select DirectX 10/11/12. Do not choose OpenGL or Vulkan for MSFS 2024.
- Complete the effect installation. Presets and shader packages can be chosen afterwards; they do not affect whether ReShade detects the simulator.
- Launch the simulator and verify the overlay. A ReShade message should normally appear during start-up, followed by the overlay when you press the key shown in that message.
Our executable-selection and DirectX walkthrough for MSFS shows the same core installation choices. It covers MSFS 2020, so use the MSFS 2024 executable identified above rather than copying its file path.
Why is FlightSimulator2024.exe missing or access denied?
A missing or inaccessible executable usually means the Xbox app or Microsoft Store has placed MSFS 2024 in a protected Windows game folder. ReShade may see the application but lack permission to place its files beside it.
- Use the client’s file-management controls: open the installed-game management screen and use its browse-files option rather than searching the Packages directory.
- Try elevated permission only when needed: if the installer reports access denied, close it and run it as administrator. This will not repair an incorrect target path.
- Use an accessible game library: where the Xbox app offers a supported move or installation-location option, place the game in a user-accessible library. Do not take ownership of
WindowsApps, because changing its permissions can break Store updates and other installed applications. - Check Windows security blocks: Controlled Folder Access or security software may prevent the ReShade hook from being written. Review the block notification and allow the trusted installer explicitly rather than disabling protection altogether.
- Confirm it is a local installation: ReShade cannot inject into an MSFS 2024 session running through cloud streaming.
What if ReShade installs but does not appear?
An installation that completes without producing an overlay usually points to the wrong executable, the wrong graphics API or files left by an older ReShade installation. Check the running process location again; shortcuts and launch stubs can lead to a different folder from the rendering executable.
Re-run the installer against the verified executable and choose DirectX 10/11/12. If that fails, uninstall the existing hook before reinstalling rather than copying DLL files between directories. Our clean ReShade removal and reinstall procedure for MSFS 2024 covers duplicate hook files and wrong-target installations.
If MSFS 2024 stops launching or reports a D3D12 initialisation problem after ReShade is added, remove the graphics hook first. Then follow our MSFS 2024 D3D12 renderer recovery steps to clear conflicting hooks and caches before trying a clean installation.
Can ReShade find MSFS 2024 on Xbox or PS5?
No. ReShade requires access to a locally installed Windows executable and cannot be installed on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 or PS5 Pro. Console editions can use only the graphics and display controls provided by Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 and the console itself.
