This applies to Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024 on Windows. The driver belongs in Windows, not the simulator’s Community folder, and these packages cannot be installed on console editions.

Which Logitech X52 or X56 download do I need?

Choose the download listed for the exact product name on the controller’s underside label. X52, X52 Professional and X56 are separate products even when their support packages look similar.

Saitek-branded units pre-date the Logitech branding but still require a package that recognises that exact hardware. On a PC capable of running MSFS, select the 64-bit Windows download. The driver and programming utility may be supplied in one installer rather than as two files.

Do not substitute G HUB for the product-specific H.O.T.A.S. package, and avoid forcing an old installation CD onto a newer version of Windows. Legacy Saitek or Mad Catz software can conflict with the signed Logitech package.

How do I install X52 or X56 drivers on Windows?

Install the software with the HOTAS disconnected, then attach each USB lead only when the installer requests it.

  1. Close Microsoft Flight Simulator. Disconnect the X52 or both X56 USB plugs from the computer.
  2. Remove conflicting software if necessary. In Windows Installed apps, uninstall old Saitek, Mad Catz or Logitech H.O.T.A.S. packages when replacing an earlier installation. Do not remove unrelated Logitech keyboard or mouse software. Restart Windows after this clean-up.
  3. Download the exact package. Use the manufacturer’s official support area, search for the full model name and select its 64-bit Windows download. Save the installer locally rather than running it from a compressed archive.
  4. Prepare the hardware. With an X52 disconnected from the PC, seat the round cable between its stick and throttle firmly. The X56 has two independent USB plugs; start with direct computer ports rather than a passive hub.
  5. Run the installer. Right-click the downloaded installer and select the administrator option. Confirm that the displayed publisher and product match the package you intended to install.
  6. Connect the HOTAS when prompted. Let Windows finish detecting the controller before advancing. With an X56, follow any separate prompts for the stick and throttle.
  7. Restart and test in Windows. Press Windows key and R, enter joy.cpl, then open each controller’s Properties panel. Move every axis through its full range and press every button. An X52 normally appears as one controller; an X56 should expose the stick and throttle separately.

How do I configure an X52 or X56 in Microsoft Flight Simulator?

Open the simulator’s Controls settings after Windows has successfully detected the HOTAS, then bind the physical axes directly rather than using keyboard-style commands.

  1. Start MSFS with the controller connected. Open Controls Options in MSFS 2020 or the Controls settings in MSFS 2024.
  2. Select every device tile. The X52 is generally represented by one tile. The X56 stick and throttle are separate controllers, so configure both.
  3. Create a custom profile. Preserve the default profile as a fallback, then use search-by-input to identify switches and axes.
  4. Assign analogue controls as axes. Bind pitch to Elevator Axis, roll to Ailerons Axis, twist to Rudder Axis if used, and the throttle lever to an appropriate Throttle Axis. Do not use increase/decrease commands for an analogue lever.
  5. Choose combined or split throttles. Use the general throttle axis for a linked-lever arrangement, or bind Throttle 1 and Throttle 2 separately when using the X56 levers independently in twin-engine aircraft.
  6. Remove duplicate assignments. Clear unwanted camera, view and flight-control bindings from the same axis or button. Reverse an axis in the simulator if forward movement produces lower power.
  7. Tune only after testing. Apply a small dead zone only where an axis jitters around centre. Excessive dead zone or sensitivity changes make precise approaches harder.

Do I need the Logitech programming software for MSFS?

No programming profile is required for normal flying in Microsoft Flight Simulator. The Windows driver identifies the hardware; the optional H.O.T.A.S. utility adds mode layers, keyboard output, macros and model-specific lighting or display settings.

  • Use direct MSFS bindings for flight axes, ordinary buttons, trim, brakes and views. This is simpler to diagnose and works independently of a loaded desktop profile.
  • Use the programming utility when you specifically need keyboard macros or multiple command layers. The X52 mode selector may be managed by this software rather than behaving like three ordinary simulator buttons.
  • Avoid double commands. Do not make a button output a keyboard shortcut in the programming utility while also assigning that button to the same action inside MSFS.
