What is IVAO, and how do I fly online with it?

IVAO (International Virtual Aviation Organisation) is a free online network that links flight-simulator pilots with human air traffic controllers and other pilots. To fly on it, create an account, install the compatible IVAO pilot client and traffic models, file a flight plan, connect from a parking stand, and use normal radio procedures.

For general flight simulation, IVAO is an external network rather than the simulator's built-in multiplayer. Your simulator flies the aircraft locally while the client exchanges position, radio and flight-plan data with IVAO. Controllers use their own radar software, and model matching displays nearby pilots as suitable aircraft. IVAO controllers are volunteers, so an airport is controlled only when someone has logged in to cover it. The network still operates when no controller is available; pilots then coordinate using the advisory frequency.

What do you need to fly on IVAO?

You need an IVAO account, a supported desktop simulator, the correct pilot client, an internet connection and enough aircraft knowledge to follow ATC instructions.

  • A supported simulator: Compatible desktop editions of Microsoft Flight Simulator, X-Plane, Prepar3D and some legacy Microsoft simulators can be used when IVAO offers a maintained connector for that version.
  • The IVAO pilot client: This is commonly identified as Altitude in IVAO documentation. Install the release specified for your exact simulator and operating system rather than assuming an older FSX or Prepar3D connector will work elsewhere.
  • Traffic models: Install IVAO's model-matching or MTL package when offered. Without it, other pilots may be invisible or represented by unsuitable default aircraft.
  • A headset and push-to-talk key: Text may be available, but voice is the normal and most practical way to communicate. A headset prevents ATC audio feeding back into the microphone.
  • Basic aircraft competence: You should be able to tune COM radios, operate the transponder, hold an assigned altitude and heading, and fly the planned departure or approach without stopping to learn the cockpit.

IVAO requires companion software, so it cannot be used directly from console editions of Microsoft Flight Simulator. That includes Xbox versions and the PlayStation 5 edition of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024; use a supported desktop installation instead.

How do you connect to IVAO for your first flight?

The safest first connection starts at a quiet parking stand in an aircraft you already know, not on a runway or in the air.

  1. Create your account and read the rules. Keep the assigned member ID and the requested network credentials available. The client may distinguish between website and network credentials, so enter the type named in its login field.
  2. Install the pilot client and models. Close the simulator during installation, include the connector or plug-in for your simulator, and allow the software through the operating system's firewall when prompted.
  3. Configure audio and controls. Select the correct microphone and headset, bind a push-to-talk button that is not already controlling the aircraft, and test the input level before connecting.
  4. Choose a sensible first flight. Check IVAO's online map or controller list before launching the simulator. Avoid a major hub during an event; a quiet controlled airport gives you time to listen and respond.
  5. Prepare and file the flight plan. Enter the same callsign you will use to connect, plus the correct aircraft type, equipment, departure, destination, route and cruising level. For an airline flight use an appropriate operator code and number; for general aviation, use the aircraft registration without punctuation if the client requires it.   6. Load at a vacant stand. Do not spawn on a runway or on top of another pilot. Disable the simulator's built-in multiplayer traffic, AI aircraft and automated ATC where necessary, otherwise you may see duplicate traffic or hear two unrelated ATC systems.
  7. Connect the simulator and network. Confirm that the client shows both connections as active. Use the exact callsign from the flight plan, keep the aircraft stationary and set the transponder as local procedures or ATC require.
  8. Listen before transmitting. Obtain the controller's information or ATIS, tune the active COM frequency and wait for a gap. A typical IFR opening call is [Station], [callsign], stand [number], information [letter], IFR to [destination], request clearance.   9. Fly the clearance you accepted. Read back runway, altitude, heading, route and squawk instructions. If you cannot comply, say unable and briefly explain; remaining silent or disconnecting creates a larger problem. Once parked after arrival, finish any required radio call and disconnect.

Avoid slew mode, teleporting and time acceleration while connected. If a technical problem requires repositioning, disconnect first; if you only need a short pause, advise the controller when possible.

What happens when no IVAO controller is online?

When no controller covers your area, you remain responsible for separation and use IVAO's advisory channel to announce relevant intentions.

The standard IVAO UNICOM frequency is normally 122.800 MHz. Make short position and intention reports before taxiing, entering a runway, departing and joining an arrival. UNICOM is not ATC, so do not request a taxi or take-off clearance from it; monitor traffic, follow published procedures and give way as required.

If a controller logs in while you are flying, tune the requested frequency and make contact. Coverage can also end during a flight because controllers choose their own session times.

Do you need a virtual airline to use IVAO?

No virtual airline, subscription or real-world pilot licence is required to fly independently on IVAO.

Which IVAO flight should a beginner choose?

Choose a short route at a quiet airport, using an aircraft whose radios, autopilot and navigation system you can operate without a checklist search.

A local VFR flight works well if you understand the area's VFR procedures. A short IFR sector can be easier for pilots who prefer a defined clearance and published route, but only if the departure, arrival and approach are already familiar. Do not try to learn a complex airliner, programme its flight-management system and speak to human ATC for the first time in the same session.

Why can't you see traffic or hear IVAO ATC?

Most IVAO connection problems come from an incomplete model installation, the wrong audio device, an inactive radio or a mismatch between the simulator connector and pilot client.

IVAO reproduces many real aviation procedures, but it remains a simulation network rather than certified flight training. Follow its local division rules and controller instructions even when they differ from a simulator's built-in ATC behaviour.
