To fly online with live ATC in a flight simulator, join a community ATC network, install the compatible pilot client, configure your microphone and push-to-talk key, file a flight plan, then connect from a parking stand. Tune the published frequency and call the appropriate controller using standard aviation phraseology.
For general flight simulation, live ATC normally means volunteer controllers directing simulated traffic over a private online network. It is not a connection to real-world air traffic control, and nothing you transmit goes over an actual aviation frequency.
Which live ATC network and pilot client do I need?

Client support can change, so use software approved by your chosen network. The pilot client handles your connection, voice communications, transponder data and surrounding traffic; it does not replace the simulator itself.
How do I set up a flight with live ATC?
- Practise the aircraft offline. Be able to start it, taxi, tune both COM radios, use the transponder and fly the planned departure and arrival without a controller coaching you through the cockpit.
- Create your network account and install the pilot client. Enter your real identity where the network requires it, but use an appropriate aircraft registration or flight number as the operational callsign.
- Configure a headset and push-to-talk key. Select the correct microphone and headphones inside the client. Avoid voice activation: engine noise, breathing and room conversations can block a busy frequency.
- Test the radio connection. Confirm that the client follows the simulator's active COM frequency. The aircraft battery, avionics, radio and audio-panel selection may all affect what you can hear or transmit.
- Install or configure model matching. This makes other pilots appear as suitable aircraft rather than generic substitutes. Poor model matching affects appearance, but normally does not stop ATC from seeing you.
- Prepare and file the flight plan. Use a valid route, sensible altitude, aircraft type and correct callsign. Filing a network flight plan does not load the route into the aircraft's GPS or flight-management system; those are separate tasks.
- Spawn at an unoccupied parking stand. Never connect on a runway or taxiway. Check the network traffic display first, because two aircraft loaded onto the same stand will overlap.
- Connect and listen before transmitting. Obtain the ATIS where available, note the active runway and pressure setting, then tune the controller responsible for your position.
- Make the initial call. State the controller's position, your callsign, location, ATIS code and request. Read back the clearance, set the assigned squawk and follow all taxi and airborne instructions.
Use simulator weather that broadly agrees with the conditions being used by ATC. If your wind, visibility or pressure differs sharply, you may see a different runway picture or altitude indication from the controller.
What should I say to live ATC?
Your first transmission should be short and contain only the information needed for the next clearance. For an IFR departure, a typical call is Manchester Delivery, Speedbird 123, stand 42, information Alpha, request clearance to Amsterdam.
Phraseology varies by country and network division, so listen to other pilots and follow local procedures. Always read back runway clearances, hold-short instructions, headings, altitudes, pressure settings and transponder codes. If a transmission is unclear, say say again; if you cannot comply, say unable and give a brief reason rather than guessing.
Which controller should I contact first?
Contact the lowest relevant position covering your location: delivery for clearance, ground for start or taxi, and tower for runway operations. If those positions are offline, some networks use top-down coverage, allowing an approach or centre controller to provide the lower service as well. Read the controller information instead of calling every station in the list.
Once airborne, remain on frequency until told to change. A controller may say contact departure or hand you to centre, approach and tower later in the flight.
What happens when no live controllers are online?
Human ATC coverage is not continuous, so an empty controller list does not indicate a broken connection. Monitor the network's published advisory frequency and make concise position reports near other traffic, following that network's rules for uncontrolled operations.
If a controller opens while you are inside the relevant airspace, they may send a contact request. Tune the stated frequency promptly, listen for a gap and report your callsign, position, altitude and intentions. Busy events offer wider coverage but are a poor choice for a first flight.
Can beginners fly with live ATC?
Beginners can use live ATC once they can control their aircraft, operate its radios and understand basic clearances without continuous assistance. Start at a quiet regional airport, choose a short route and avoid complex airspace until ordinary calls and readbacks feel manageable.

Why can I hear ATC but not transmit?
One-way audio usually comes from the push-to-talk binding, microphone selection or aircraft radio configuration rather than the network itself. Check these common failures in order:
- No transmit indication: rebind push-to-talk and check operating-system microphone permission and the client's selected input device.
- Transmit indication but no response: verify the active frequency, COM transmit selection and audio-panel state. A frequency entered in the standby window is not active until swapped.
- Two ATC voices at once: mute the simulator's built-in ATC voice or radio-assistance features while using the online network.
- Controller cannot identify your altitude: check the assigned transponder code and operating mode, then follow the controller's instruction.
- Other aircraft are missing or incorrect: repair the model-matching configuration; do not repeatedly reconnect while parked in traffic.
- Your filed route is absent from the cockpit: load or enter it separately in the GPS or flight-management system.
