KATL scenery for X-Plane 12: compare the stock airport, Nimbus KATL V3 and freeware, with compatibility, installation and scenery-order advice.
X-Plane 12 includes a usable KATL through its Global Airports scenery. The best-known dedicated upgrade is Nimbus Simulation Studios’ KATL V3, although older releases were built for X-Plane 11 and should not be assumed fully compatible. Freeware KATL packages also exist, but their library requirements and X-Plane 12 behaviour vary.
KATL is Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The included Gateway-based rendition is the safest option for stability and performance; a custom airport is mainly worthwhile for more detailed concourses, aprons, lighting and ground equipment.
Which KATL scenery option should I choose?
The right choice depends on whether you value dependable X-Plane 12 operation, detailed terminal modelling or a free upgrade.
| Option | Best for | Main caveat |
|---|---|---|
| Global Airports KATL | Native compatibility, straightforward installation and sensible performance | Less bespoke modelling than a dedicated payware airport |
| Nimbus KATL V3 | A more detailed commercial rendition of the airport | Compatibility is release-dependent; an older X-Plane 11 build is not automatically an X-Plane 12 product |
| Community freeware KATL | A no-cost custom airport or incremental improvement | Quality, age, library dependencies and exclusion zones vary considerably |
| Atlanta orthophoto scenery | More recognisable terrain and urban detail on approaches | It supplements KATL; it does not provide accurate terminals or working jetways |
Search both “KATL” and “Atlanta” in our X-Plane downloads catalogue. Check the simulator version on each file rather than assuming every result carrying the airport code supports X-Plane 12.
Is Nimbus KATL V3 compatible with X-Plane 12?
Nimbus KATL V3 compatibility depends on the exact release being installed. Some X-Plane 11 scenery loads in X-Plane 12, but loading successfully is not the same as having native support.
Before buying or installing it, confirm that the specific build explicitly names X-Plane 12. An older copy may have static or non-functional jetways, legacy ground textures, incompatible plugin features, outdated taxi routes or visual problems under X-Plane 12 weather and lighting.
Our X-Plane 11-to-12 compatibility checklist explains what normally carries across and which scenery features need closer inspection. Keep the original archive and test the package separately so it is easy to remove if errors appear.
How do I install KATL scenery in X-Plane 12?
A KATL airport package belongs in X-Plane 12/Custom Scenery/, with its folder above Global Airports and any orthophoto or mesh scenery.
- Extract the archive. Open the resulting folder and make sure the scenery files are not buried inside a second identically named folder. A typical airport package exposes folders such as
Earth nav datanear its top level. - Copy the airport folder. Place it directly inside
X-Plane 12/Custom Scenery/, not in the Aircraft or plugins directories. - Install only the documented libraries. Missing object libraries are a common reason terminals, signs or ramp equipment disappear.
- Start and close X-Plane 12. This allows the simulator to add the package to
scenery_packs.ini. - Check scenery priority. Put the custom KATL entry above Global Airports. Overlays, orthophotos and base mesh belong lower; our guide to X-Plane scenery priority covers the full order.
- Keep only one custom KATL active. Two airport packages can produce doubled terminals, conflicting taxiways and overlapping ground markings.
Why are KATL terminals or runways not displaying correctly?
Missing KATL buildings usually indicate an absent library, an incorrectly nested folder or a disabled scenery entry. Open Log.txt in the main X-Plane 12 folder and search for the KATL package name, missing objects, textures or library errors.
- The stock airport still appears: move the custom KATL package above Global Airports and check that its entry is not marked
SCENERY_PACK_DISABLED. - Two sets of buildings overlap: disable duplicate KATL packages. Poor exclusion zones in an older package can also allow default objects through.
- Only some terminals are missing: reinstall every library named by the scenery author and confirm that the archive retained its original folder structure. See our missing-airport-building troubleshooting steps for the usual checks.
- Runways have terrain steps or odd slopes: place orthophoto and mesh packages below the airport. An old package may also rely on terrain behaviour that changed in X-Plane 12.
- Jetways remain static: the scenery may use static models or an older plugin-driven system. Installing the airport does not automatically convert those jetways to X-Plane 12’s supported animation method.
For most pilots, we recommend starting with the included KATL and replacing it only when a custom package offers specific terminal detail you need and explicitly supports X-Plane 12. Orthophoto scenery is the better addition when the airport itself is adequate but Atlanta’s surrounding terrain looks too generic.
