Compare KLAX scenery for X-Plane 12: the built-in airport, ShortFinal Design, legacy freeware, compatibility checks and correct scenery order.
X-Plane 12 includes a serviceable Gateway version of KLAX. For a more detailed airport, ShortFinal Design KLAX HD is the best-known commercial option; the older MisterX6 KLAX is freeware but was made for earlier X-Plane versions. Orthophoto and regional overlay packages improve Los Angeles around the airport rather than replacing KLAX itself.
Which KLAX scenery options are practical in X-Plane 12?
The practical choices are the included Global Airports rendition, a detailed commercial airport, legacy freeware and packages that enhance the surrounding Los Angeles area.
| Option | X-Plane 12 status | Best use | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Default Global Airports KLAX | Native and included with X-Plane 12 | Reliable airport layout, low installation risk and reasonable performance | Some terminals, signs and landside details may be less bespoke than payware |
| ShortFinal Design KLAX HD | Commercial custom airport; compatibility depends on the exact build | Detailed terminals, ground markings, airport objects and a more distinctive LAX appearance | Its original release predates X-Plane 12, so confirm that the supplied files or compatibility update explicitly cover X-Plane 12 |
| MisterX6 KLAX | Legacy freeware created for earlier X-Plane releases | A free custom rendition for users prepared to troubleshoot older scenery | It is not a native X-Plane 12 package; older materials, traffic plugins and jetways may not behave correctly |
| Community KLAX edits | Varies by package | Minor layout, object or visual improvements without buying a full airport | Check the stated simulator version, dependencies and modification date rather than assuming all KLAX files support X-Plane 12 |
| Los Angeles orthophoto and overlays | Compatible when the package has an X-Plane 12 edition or documented support | Improving the basin, roads, buildings and ground imagery beyond the airport boundary | These do not provide detailed KLAX terminals or replace the airport itself |
Older commercial KLAX releases also exist, but we treat any X-Plane 10 or 11 product as legacy unless its exact documentation names X-Plane 12. A product loading without an error does not establish full compatibility. Our X-Plane freeware library is useful for checking community scenery whose description explicitly identifies the supported simulator version.
Which KLAX scenery should I choose?
Use the included KLAX unless you specifically want more detailed terminal architecture, apron clutter or ground textures.
- Choose the default airport for the simplest installation, dependable taxi routes and the lowest chance of plugin or library trouble.
- Choose ShortFinal Design KLAX HD when airport detail matters most and the exact package available to you is labelled for X-Plane 12.
- Choose legacy freeware only if you accept that static jetways, old lighting or missing weather effects may require compromises.
- Add orthophoto or regional overlays when the airport looks acceptable but the wider Los Angeles basin appears too generic.
A mistake we see constantly is replacing a newer default airport with an attractive but much older custom package. Compare runway and taxiway accuracy as well as screenshots; KLAX construction changes can leave an old scenery rendition with obsolete taxi routes or terminal areas.
Will X-Plane 11 KLAX scenery work in X-Plane 12?
Many X-Plane 11 airport packages will load in X-Plane 12, but that does not make them fully compatible.
Basic airport data, DSF scenery tiles and ordinary objects often survive the transition. Problems are more likely in custom ground polygons, seasonal or wet-surface effects, lighting, animated jetways and bundled plugins. A legacy traffic plugin may fail while the terminal buildings continue to display normally.
Watch for surfaces that hide X-Plane 12 weather effects, jetways that remain fixed, unusually bright night lighting and terrain or coastline mismatches. Missing-object warnings usually indicate an absent scenery library rather than an X-Plane 12 rendering fault.
How do I install and layer KLAX scenery?
Install one custom KLAX airport in Custom Scenery, then give it higher priority than Global Airports, overlays, orthophotos and base mesh.
- Remove competing KLAX packages. Move older versions outside
Custom Scenery; disabling or deleting random subfolders can leave duplicate airport components behind. - Check the folder structure. For an airport package,
Earth nav datashould normally sit inside the package's top-level folder, not inside an accidental second nested folder. - Run X-Plane once and close it. This allows X-Plane to update
scenery_packs.ini. - Correct the priority. Put the custom KLAX entry above
Global Airports. Regional overlays follow the airports, with orthophoto and base mesh lower down. Follow the developer's instructions if the product contains separately named airport, overlay or mesh folders. - Check dependencies. Install only the libraries named by the package and inspect
Log.txtafter loading at KLAX if X-Plane reports missing scenery.
Do not overwrite files inside Global Airports. Simulator scenery updates can replace those edits, while a separate custom package is easier to disable and troubleshoot. Our explanation of global scenery packages compatible with X-Plane 12 covers how X-World, AutoOrtho, Ortho4XP and mesh packages fit beneath a custom airport.
Common KLAX scenery faults
Most KLAX failures come from duplicate airports, missing dependencies or an older plugin rather than from the KLAX identifier itself.
- Default KLAX appears instead: check for a nested installation folder, a
SCENERY_PACK_DISABLEDentry or incorrect priority inscenery_packs.ini. - Two sets of terminals appear: another KLAX package is active, or the custom scenery lacks adequate exclusion zones. Keep only one custom airport active.
- Buildings are missing: inspect
Log.txtfor the library name and use our guidance on X-Plane 12 scenery-library compatibility before changing the airport itself. - Jetways are visible but stationary: the scenery may rely on an older animation system or plugin. X-Plane 12 cannot automatically convert every legacy jetway object into a working native jetway.
- Ground textures flicker: two airport surface packages are probably drawing in the same place. Remove the duplicate rather than trying to solve the conflict with graphics settings.
- Performance drops around LAX: dense Los Angeles overlays, high-resolution imagery, airport objects and parked aircraft can combine into a heavy load. Reduce the most demanding layer first instead of deleting required library files.
