X-Plane 12 users can choose the built-in Scenery Gateway version of KORD, Nimbus Simulation Studios’ detailed KORD package, legacy Chicago airport bundles, and freeware community renditions. The safest add-on is one explicitly updated for X-Plane 12; older X-Plane 11 packages may load but can have lighting, jetway, texture or terrain problems.
KORD scenery choices for X-Plane 12
The available options range from an included, operationally useful airport to detailed commercial scenery and older packages requiring careful compatibility checks.

Commercial catalogue listings and update entitlements can change. The compatibility statement attached to the exact file being installed matters more than an old review or the product name alone.
Which KORD scenery option should I choose?
Choose according to the area and level of detail you actually need, not simply the largest download.
- Use the Gateway airport for straightforward installation, dependable XP12 behaviour and an airport layout that can receive approved community revisions.
- Choose Nimbus KORD when custom terminal modelling and a more distinctive airport environment take priority, provided the supplied build supports XP12.
- Choose a Chicago airport bundle when flying regularly between O’Hare, Midway and other local airports, but only after confirming XP12 compatibility.
- Try freeware when you are prepared to manage scenery libraries and troubleshoot older assets.
Do not install several KORD renditions together. A mistake we see constantly is leaving an older airport active beneath a replacement, producing doubled terminals, overlapping taxiway markings or conflicting exclusion zones.
Will X-Plane 11 KORD scenery work in X-Plane 12?
Sometimes, but loading without an error does not prove full X-Plane 12 compatibility. Basic airport data, objects and textures often transfer, while older lighting, seasonal behaviour, wet-surface effects, plugins and animated jetways may not.
Inspect the airport by day and night and in wet weather. Also compare its runway and taxiway layout with the included Gateway airport: O’Hare has undergone major airfield changes, so a visually impressive legacy package can still contain outdated pavement, signs or taxi routes.
An XP11 package that relies on an unsupported plugin should not be described as fully XP12 compatible merely because its buildings appear. Moving jetways are a common trap: X-Plane 12’s own jetway system does not automatically animate every bridge model created for an older third-party system.
How do I install KORD scenery correctly?
Install KORD as a custom airport above the default airport, overlays, orthophotos and mesh unless its documentation specifies a different arrangement.
- Remove competing KORD packages. Move old versions outside
Custom Sceneryrather than overwriting them. - Extract the download fully. The package’s top-level folder should normally contain items such as
Earth nav data, objects or textures. Avoid a duplicated folder level created during extraction. - Install required libraries. Freeware commonly references external object libraries; omitting one can leave terminals missing or stop the package loading.
- Place the scenery in
Custom Scenery. Do not overwrite or modify X-Plane’s Global Airports package. - Start and close X-Plane once. This allows the simulator to register the package in
scenery_packs.ini. - Check scenery priority. Keep the custom KORD airport above Global Airports and regional overlays. Orthophotos and ordinary base mesh belong below it; a companion mesh supplied by the airport author must follow that package’s instructions. Why does KORD look wrong after installation?
Most KORD display failures come from duplicate airports, missing libraries, incorrect folder structure or competing terrain packages.
- Default buildings still appear: move the custom KORD package above Global Airports and confirm that it contains valid airport data.
- Terminals are doubled: disable every other KORD package, including old versions with an unexpected folder name.
- X-Plane reports a scenery loading problem: open
Log.txtafter quitting and find the first missing library, object or texture reference associated with KORD. - The airport has cliffs, holes or mismatched terrain: check for an airport-specific mesh competing with orthophoto or regional mesh covering the same tile.
- Jetways remain static: verify whether the scenery uses native XP12 jetways, static models or a separate animation system. Static bridges cannot be fixed through scenery order.
- Only the default airport appears: check for double-nested folders and make sure the installed package is not disabled in
scenery_packs.ini.
Improving the Chicago scenery around O’Hare
A detailed airport package usually improves only KORD and its immediate boundary. Chicago buildings, roads, shorelines and ground imagery require separate regional scenery.

Keep expectations realistic around O’Hare: orthophotos improve the surrounding ground but do not replace terminals, taxiway signs or airport lighting. They can also expose colour differences at the edge of an airport’s included imagery, so matching resolution and source colour is often more valuable than simply using the highest available detail.
