Compare KDEN scenery for X-Plane 12: the main payware upgrade, free default airport, compatibility checks, installation and scenery order.
For X-Plane 12, the established dedicated KDEN upgrade is X-Codr Designs' commercial Denver International Airport package; use the XP12-labelled build rather than an older installer. The simulator's Scenery Gateway KDEN is the reliable free baseline. Older X-Plane 11 Denver releases may load, but they are not fully compatible unless their developer supplied an XP12 update.
Which KDEN scenery option should I choose?
Choose X-Codr Designs' KDEN when you want a detailed custom airport; stay with the Gateway version when reliability, simplicity and zero extra dependencies matter most.
| Choice | What it provides | X-Plane 12 status | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| X-Codr Designs KDEN | Commercial custom terminals, aprons, airport objects and ground detailing | Use the build explicitly labelled for X-Plane 12 | You want a dedicated high-detail Denver airport |
| Scenery Gateway KDEN | The airport supplied through X-Plane's Global Airports scenery | Native free baseline included with X-Plane 12 | You want straightforward installation and dependable compatibility |
| Older third-party KDEN packages | Legacy commercial or freeware Denver scenery made for X-Plane 11 | Conditional; do not assume full XP12 support | The specific package has an XP12 update and all dependencies remain compatible |
Regional orthophotos, overlays and terrain mesh can improve the area around Denver, but they do not replace the airport's terminals, gates or markings. Our explanation of how X-Plane 12 scenery layers complement one another helps distinguish an airport package from regional imagery.
For airline flying, also check how closely a package reflects KDEN's concourses, stands and taxiways. Visual scenery can change the physical airport and parking positions, but SIDs, STARs and approaches come from the simulator's navigation database rather than the terminal model.
Will older X-Plane 11 KDEN scenery work in X-Plane 12?
An X-Plane 11 airport may load in X-Plane 12, but loading without an error is not the same as being fully compatible.
- Look for explicit X-Plane 12 support in the package documentation or change log.
- Check that every required object library and jetway system supports XP12.
- Expect possible problems with lighting, wet surfaces, vegetation, ground textures and custom materials in an unconverted package.
- Treat supplied mesh separately: an older mesh may override newer terrain or conflict with orthophotos covering the same tile.
Use our X-Plane 11 to X-Plane 12 compatibility checks before committing to a legacy Denver package. Platform labels matter too: the Denver airport scenery listed specifically for FSX cannot be installed in X-Plane 12.
How should KDEN scenery be installed and ordered?
Install the XP12 airport package in Custom Scenery, preserve its component folders and place the custom airport above Global Airports in scenery_packs.ini.
- Select the correct download: use the package build identified for X-Plane 12, not an older installer retained from an X-Plane 11 installation.
- Extract every supplied component: place the folder containing content such as
Earth nav datadirectly insideCustom Scenery. Avoid an extra nested folder created by the archive utility. - Install documented dependencies: add only the libraries or plugins named by the developer. Our guide to XP12 scenery-library compatibility and missing objects covers the usual dependency problems.
- Let X-Plane register the package: start X-Plane 12 once, then close it so new entries are added to
scenery_packs.ini. - Check scenery priority: arrange the relevant entries from higher to lower priority as shown below, while retaining any special order required by the package documentation.
| Priority | Scenery type |
|---|---|
| Highest | Custom KDEN airport and its airport-specific object components |
| Below KDEN | Global Airports |
| Lower | Regional roads, forests and other overlays |
| Lower still | KDEN-specific mesh, where the developer requires it |
| Lowest | Orthophoto base mesh and other generic terrain mesh |
Only the highest-priority base mesh for a tile is normally displayed. If both a KDEN package and an orthophoto package supply mesh for Denver, follow the airport developer's order rather than trying to merge them by renaming folders.
Why is KDEN showing missing buildings or duplicate terminals?
Most broken KDEN installations are caused by duplicate airports, missing libraries, nested folders or competing mesh.
- Default and custom terminals appear together: confirm that only one custom KDEN package is enabled and that it sits above
Global Airports. There is normally no need to delete Global Airports. - Buildings or textures are absent: inspect
Log.txtafter loading KDEN. Messages such asFailed to find resourceusually identify a missing library, texture or incorrectly placed component. - The airport does not appear: check for an extra folder level. X-Plane must be able to reach the package's scenery content from the folder directly inside
Custom Scenery. - Runways, aprons or buildings float or sink: disable competing base meshes one at a time and restore the ordering required by the KDEN package.
- Jetways remain static: determine whether the scenery uses native X-Plane jetways, a documented plugin system or static models. Installing unrelated libraries will not animate jetways that were designed to be static.
