How do I get keyboard controls working again?
Restoring simulator focus, then validating the selected Keyboard preset, fixes most cases without reinstalling anything.
- Return focus to the simulator. Click the main flight view, close any EFB search box, control-search field or other text entry, then press Esc. On PC, use Alt+Tab to switch away and back once; this is especially relevant with multiple monitors.
- Test the keyboard outside MSFS 2024. Type into an operating-system text field. On Xbox or PlayStation, confirm that the console recognises the keyboard. If it does not, reconnect it directly, try another USB port and avoid a hub while testing.
- Check whether MSFS receives the key. Open the simulator's Controls settings, select the Keyboard device and use Search by Input. Press the failed key. If the command appears, the input path works and the fault is its assignment or context; if nothing registers, focus, hardware or background input software remains the likely cause. - Remove competing controllers. Disconnect gamepads, HOTAS hardware, pedals and virtual input devices, restart the simulator and test the keyboard alone. A noisy analogue axis can continuously override keyboard-based throttle, rudder or flight-control commands. - Perform a clean restart. On PC, close MSFS 2024 completely and temporarily disable keyboard remapping, macro or input-overlay software. On console, close the game rather than resuming a suspended session, connect the keyboard before launch and start it again.

Why does the keyboard work in menus but not while flying?
If the keyboard works in menus but not in flight, the hardware is usually fine; the flight command is unassigned, bound in the wrong preset or being overridden. Menu keys are not proof that throttle, flight-control, camera and aircraft-system commands have valid bindings.
Search for the intended action by name as well as by input. MSFS 2024 may offer axis, increase/decrease, hold, set and toggle versions of similar commands. Binding the wrong version can make a key appear correctly assigned while producing no useful response.
- Numpad commands: Check Num Lock. Compact keyboards may also send a different key code or lack a true numeric keypad.
- Function keys: On laptops, Fn Lock can determine whether the simulator receives F1–F12 or a brightness and media command.
- Symbol and punctuation keys: The operating-system keyboard layout may not match the physical keyboard, especially when switching between QWERTY, QWERTZ and AZERTY layouts.
- Modifier combinations: Tap Ctrl, Alt, Shift and the Windows key individually to release a modifier that the simulator or operating system believes is still held.
- One aircraft only: Test the same command in a standard aircraft. If it works there, inspect any aircraft-specific profile or add-on rather than resetting the whole keyboard.
A command can also be received correctly but have no visible effect because the aircraft state prevents it. Landing gear may be inhibited under load, an autopilot or assistance feature may counter control inputs, and some starter or avionics commands require the appropriate electrical and fuel configuration.
Should I reinstall MSFS 2024?
No—reinstalling Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is rarely the correct fix for keyboard input. Control profiles may be synchronised with the account, so a reinstall can restore the same faulty preset.
Reinstall or use the platform's file-repair facility only if the Controls screen itself is damaged, several unrelated input devices have failed, or the simulator cannot save any settings. Before that, test the built-in keyboard preset with other controllers disconnected and input-related add-ons disabled.
