Find the longest runway in the world, why Qamdo Bamda is the famous answer, and how paved, operational and lakebed records differ.
In real-world aviation, the answer depends on what counts as a runway. Qamdo Bamda Airport in Tibet is famous for its original 5,500 m (18,045 ft) paved runway, but that strip has been replaced. Including marked unpaved surfaces, Edwards Air Force Base’s lakebed Runway 17/35 is far longer at about 11,917 m (39,098 ft).
Which runway actually holds the world record?
Edwards Air Force Base holds the absolute length record only when a marked dry-lake runway is included; Qamdo Bamda remains the familiar answer for a conventional paved airport runway, but its record is historical rather than operational.

A mistake we see constantly is quoting Qamdo Bamda’s 5,500 m figure from an old record list, then comparing it with airport data showing 4,500 m. Those figures refer to its original runway and its replacement, respectively. Operational status therefore matters as much as the measured pavement length.
Why was Qamdo Bamda’s runway so long?
The original runway was exceptionally long because Qamdo Bamda sits at an elevation of approximately 4,334 m (14,219 ft). Thin air reduces engine thrust and aerodynamic lift, so an aircraft needs a higher true airspeed and usually travels farther along the ground during take-off.
That does not mean every aircraft needs 5,500 m at sea level. Required distance changes with aircraft mass, temperature, wind, runway slope, surface condition and obstacles. Does physical runway length equal usable runway length?
No. The full physical strip may not be available for a particular take-off or landing because of displaced thresholds, stopways, clearways, construction or operational restrictions.
- TORA is the take-off run available.
- TODA is the take-off distance available and may include a clearway.
- ASDA is the accelerate-stop distance available and may include a stopway.
- LDA is the landing distance available beyond the landing threshold.
This distinction is especially important when comparing a paved commercial runway with a marked lakebed strip. Edwards’ enormous dry-lake runway is useful for specialised military and flight-test operations, but it is not equivalent to nearly 12 kilometres of normal airline pavement.
Which answer should be used?
For general aviation trivia, the best qualified answer is: Qamdo Bamda had the world’s longest publicly used paved runway at 5,500 m, while Edwards Air Force Base has a much longer marked dry-lake runway at about 11,917 m. If the question specifies an operational paved runway, there is no safe reason to repeat Qamdo’s historical figure without explaining that its replacement is shorter.
