Microsoft Flight Simulator is a full aviation simulator with modelled aircraft, aerodynamics, airports, avionics, weather and air traffic. Google Earth is primarily a geographic viewer built for exploring imagery and places; its desktop flight mode is a simple extra, not a substitute for MSFS. Both depict the whole planet, but for different purposes.

Does Microsoft Flight Simulator use Google Earth imagery?
No. Stock Microsoft Flight Simulator does not stream Google Earth map tiles or use Google's imagery service.
MSFS uses Microsoft's mapping pipeline, including Bing-supplied aerial imagery, elevation data, photogrammetry and procedural reconstruction. Google Earth uses Google's separate imagery and 3D-data pipeline. They can look similar from altitude because both begin with real-world aerial or satellite sources, but the data, processing and licences are different.
MSFS then turns its source data into terrain that works inside a simulator: water receives physical and visual properties, trees are generated, buildings gain approximate three-dimensional forms, and airports are made usable by aircraft. A common mistake is assuming there must be a setting that switches MSFS from Bing to Google data. There is no official switch. Community scenery can improve individual regions, landmarks and airports, but it is installed as an add-on rather than selected as an alternative global map provider.
Which has more accurate scenery?
Google Earth is usually the better geographical inspection tool, while MSFS is usually the better representation of the world from a pilot's operating perspective.
- For inspecting a building or road: Google Earth may provide clearer imagery, additional viewing angles, coordinates, Street View or historical imagery. Coverage and image dates still vary by location.
- For flying into an airport: MSFS provides runway surfaces, lighting, taxiways, radio navigation and aircraft interaction. Default airports can contain incorrect layouts or elevations, while handcrafted and add-on airports are often more detailed.
- For low-level visual flying: MSFS combines terrain, vegetation, weather, lighting and cockpit perspective into one coherent scene. Procedural buildings and photogrammetry can still be distorted, outdated or missing.
Neither product displays a live satellite feed. An image can be several years old, and neighbouring tiles may come from different seasons or acquisition dates. Live weather and live traffic in MSFS do not make its ground imagery live.
If MSFS looks unexpectedly blurry, verify that online world-data streaming and photogrammetry are enabled, check any bandwidth limit, and rebuild the rolling cache if the installed version provides one. Raising Terrain Level of Detail improves draw distance, but it cannot recover imagery that failed to stream or replace generic buildings with photogrammetry. Purpose-built regional scenery and visual enhancements are the better answer when the source coverage is weak.
Can Google Earth's flight mode replace MSFS?
Google Earth's flight mode cannot replace MSFS for detailed aircraft operation, flight planning or realistic simulator flying.
Google Earth Pro for desktop provides two aircraft, selectable starting positions, a basic head-up display and keyboard, mouse or joystick control. It is entertaining for viewing terrain from the air, but it lacks the broad aircraft selection, working cockpits, detailed avionics, ATC, multiplayer, weather engine and add-on ecosystem found in Microsoft Flight Simulator.
Google Earth remains useful beside a simulator for identifying landmarks, examining mountains or checking the broad geographical context of a route. It should not replace an aviation chart or authoritative airport information: image age, obstacle data, runway status and airspace details are not guaranteed to be suitable for flight planning.
Which one should you use?
Choose the product according to whether you want to operate an aircraft or inspect the Earth.
- Choose Microsoft Flight Simulator for aircraft systems, take-offs and landings, navigation, weather, airport operations, peripherals, VR and structured aviation activities.
- Choose Google Earth for map exploration, coordinates, measurements, Street View, historical imagery and quick visual inspection without running a full simulator.
- Use both when planning a sightseeing flight: inspect landmarks and terrain in Google Earth, then fly the route in MSFS with its aircraft, weather and airport systems.
