Yes. The Microsoft SideWinder Force Feedback 2 is still a good USB flight stick for PC flight simulators when the hardware is healthy. Its axes and buttons work in many modern sims, but force feedback depends on simulator support; Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024 do not provide it natively.

Why is the SideWinder Force Feedback 2 still good?

A healthy SideWinder Force Feedback 2 combines smooth pitch and roll control, twist rudder, a throttle slider and motor-driven forces in one compact controller. Rather than relying solely on a spring, its motors can vary the centring force and reproduce effects generated by a compatible simulator.

The design has limitations. It has one hat switch and relatively few buttons compared with a modern HOTAS, while every surviving example is second-hand and unsupported by Microsoft. Age, condition and simulator compatibility matter more than the model's original reputation.

It remains most attractive for older Microsoft Flight Simulator versions, DCS aircraft with useful force-feedback behaviour and other PC sims that still output compatible effects. For complex airliners or combat aircraft, expect to use a keyboard, separate throttle or button panel alongside it.

Does the SideWinder Force Feedback 2 work on Windows 11?

On a Windows PC, a healthy USB SideWinder Force Feedback 2 is usually recognised for basic input without installing the original SideWinder software. The old configuration package is not required for ordinary axis and button detection and may not install cleanly on a modern 64-bit system.

  1. Connect both cables: USB carries the controller input, while the motors require the correct mains lead or power adapter. Use a direct PC USB port while diagnosing problems.
  2. Check Windows detection: open joy.cpl, select the joystick and test pitch, roll, twist, throttle, hat switch and every button. Watch for spikes, missing travel or an axis that will not settle.
  3. Create a clean simulator profile: bind pitch, roll, rudder and throttle manually. Remove duplicate pitch or roll assignments from gamepads and other controllers.
  4. Test the motors separately: use a simulator known to produce force-feedback effects, hold the grip normally so its presence sensor is covered, and confirm that the stick changes force or centring.

In Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024, the axes and buttons can be assigned on PC, but neither simulator supplies native DirectInput joystick force feedback. The stick may therefore feel loose or lack its intended effects unless a separate, compatible force-feedback utility supplies them. Why are the controls detected but no forces working?

Axes without force usually indicate missing simulator support, missing mains power or an inactive grip sensor rather than complete joystick failure.

  • No centring or effects: confirm the power connection, hold the grip normally and test in a simulator with native force feedback. Testing only in MSFS 2020 or 2024 cannot establish whether the motors work.
  • The stick pulls off-centre: reset aircraft trim, recalibrate the controller and check any force-feedback axis-swap or reversal setting provided by the simulator. Do not try to hide a force-direction problem with a large dead zone.
  • Inputs jump or flicker: test again in joy.cpl. Spikes visible there indicate controller wear or a cable fault, not a simulator sensitivity problem.
  • The aircraft reacts twice: remove duplicate axis assignments from other controllers. A gamepad and joystick bound to the same control can make the aircraft oscillate even when the FF2 is working properly.
  • Forces become violent or unstable: reduce force-feedback gain in the simulator or compatibility utility. Input sensitivity and force strength are different settings.

What should I check before buying a used FF2?

A second-hand SideWinder Force Feedback 2 is worth considering only after both its conventional controls and motor system have been tested.

  1. Confirm that the power equipment is included. USB detection alone does not prove that the force-feedback hardware works.
  2. Inspect the cable exits and grip. Reject examples with damaged insulation, loose connectors, cracks or excessive movement around the gimbal.
  3. Test every input in Windows. Move each axis slowly through its full range and operate every button repeatedly.
  4. Run a compatible force-feedback simulator. Check for smooth resistance and centring rather than grinding, intermittent force or a motor that works only in one direction.
  5. Judge it as unsupported hardware. There is no manufacturer warranty or dependable supply of replacement parts, so price should reflect condition and risk.

When is a newer joystick the better choice?

Choose a newer joystick when straightforward compatibility, more controls and manufacturer support matter more than motorised feedback.

  • Keep or buy the FF2 when it is fully tested, you mainly use a compatible PC simulator and force feedback is the reason you want it.
  • Choose a modern spring or cam-based stick when MSFS 2020 or 2024 is your main simulator and you do not want to depend on extra force-feedback software.
  • Choose a HOTAS for combat aircraft or complex cockpit procedures requiring more hats, buttons and throttle controls.
  • Choose a yoke when replicating the control layout of typical general-aviation aircraft and airliners matters more than the FF2's compact size.
