Why can't MSFS 2020 connect to online services?

Ian Stephens
In short

Fix MSFS 2020 online services connection failures by checking data settings, Xbox sign-in, outages, network filters and Gaming Services.

MSFS 2020 usually cannot connect to online services because Online Functionality is disabled, Microsoft/Xbox authentication has expired, the service is down, or a VPN, firewall or DNS filter is blocking traffic. Re-enable data services, refresh the correct account sign-in, restart the sim and network, then repair Gaming Services if needed.

How do I restore MSFS 2020 online services?

Restore Microsoft Flight Simulator online services by checking service availability and data settings first, then refreshing authentication before changing the network or repairing Windows components.

  1. Check for a service outage. If the Marketplace, live weather, multiplayer and Bing scenery all fail together, check the platform’s service-status information. During a confirmed outage, wait rather than reinstalling or resetting the simulator.
  2. Perform a complete restart. Exit MSFS 2020 rather than returning only to its main menu. On Xbox, select the game tile, choose Quit and remove it from Quick Resume; on PC, ensure the simulator has closed before relaunching. Resuming an old session can preserve an expired online token.
  3. Enable Online Functionality. Open Options > General Options > Data and switch Online Functionality on. Check the Data Limitation settings as well, especially if a usage cap or warning was configured, then apply and save the changes. If the exact message is You are currently offline, use our focused checks for that offline warning.
  4. Refresh the Microsoft/Xbox sign-in. On PC, close MSFS and check the accounts shown in the Xbox app and Microsoft Store, then sign out and back into the accounts normally used for that installation. Steam owners still require a Microsoft/Xbox account inside MSFS; Steam authentication alone is not enough. A mistake we see constantly is signing into an unused Microsoft account without noticing. Our MSFS 2020 Xbox authentication checks cover account mismatches and failed sign-in components in more detail.
  5. Correct the system clock. Enable automatic date, time and time-zone settings, then synchronise the clock. A clock that is wrong by even a modest amount can invalidate secure authentication tokens.
  6. Isolate the network problem. Restart the PC or console and router. Temporarily disable any VPN, proxy, custom DNS filtering or network-wide advert blocking, and make sure security software permits normal outbound traffic from MSFS and Xbox services. On PC, a phone hotspot can be used briefly as a diagnostic: if MSFS connects through it, the router, DNS provider or main connection is the likely cause.
  7. Install pending updates. Update MSFS, Windows and the Xbox components used by the simulator. Microsoft Store installations should be checked through the Store library; Steam installations update the launcher through Steam but still depend on Microsoft/Xbox authentication components. Restart after updating rather than immediately reopening the sim.
  8. Repair Gaming Services on PC. In Windows installed-app settings, open the advanced options for Gaming Services and try Repair before Reset. If it will not load, update or authenticate, follow our targeted Gaming Services repair procedure. Xbox users should skip this Windows-only step.

Do not leave a firewall or security suite disabled after testing. If switching it off restores the connection, create the appropriate permission or restore its default rules instead.

Which MSFS online symptom identifies the fault?

The wording of the error and the services affected usually reveal whether the fault is authentication, data configuration or a specific online feature.

Why does only one online feature fail?

If only one MSFS 2020 online feature is missing, the main connection is probably working and its individual setting or service should be checked instead.

  • Bing scenery or photogrammetry: Verify Bing Data World Graphics and, where required, Photogrammetry under the Data options. A rolling-cache fault may disrupt scenery tiles, but it does not normally disconnect Xbox authentication or the Marketplace.
  • Live weather: Confirm that online data is enabled and select the live weather preset. Failure of live weather alone does not justify resetting Gaming Services.
  • Multiplayer: Check the multiplayer data setting, Xbox privacy permissions and the in-sim server selection. Trying another nearby server may help a regional multiplayer fault, but it will not repair a failed account sign-in.
  • Marketplace: Confirm Online Functionality and the expected Xbox account. If maps and weather still work, avoid deleting scenery packages because the general data connection is already active.

Should I reinstall MSFS 2020?

No, reinstalling MSFS 2020 is rarely the correct fix for an online-services failure because it does not repair an outage, blocked connection or expired account token.

Do not delete the Official or Community folders merely because the simulator reports that it is offline. Consider file verification or reinstallation only after authentication, data settings, network access and platform components are known to work and the launcher itself remains damaged.
