How do I fix MSFS 2024 not launching or loading?
Work through these checks in order and test the simulator after each one, stopping as soon as it opens normally.
- Check for a service outage. Look at the service-status information for your platform before changing files. If authentication or cloud services are unavailable, reinstalling the simulator will not help. MSFS 2024 depends heavily on online authentication and streamed content; our explanation of its online and offline requirements covers the limitations.
- Close it completely and restart the device. On PC, end any remaining simulator or platform-client process and reboot Windows. On Xbox Series X|S, quit the game rather than resuming it through Quick Resume. On PS5 or PS5 Pro, close the game from the switcher and restart the console.
- Confirm the account and licence. Open the platform library and make sure MSFS 2024 is shown as owned or included with the subscription on that account. Microsoft Store installations should use the expected Microsoft account in both the Store and Xbox app. On PlayStation 5, restore licences from the console account settings if the game appears locked despite being owned.
- Install every pending update. Update the simulator, its platform client and the operating system. On a Windows Store or Xbox app installation, also update the Xbox app, Microsoft Store components and Gaming Services. Simulator updates can have a platform download followed by package processing, so allow both stages to finish; use our platform-specific MSFS 2024 update procedure if that process stalls.
- Start without third-party content. Choose Safe Mode when MSFS offers it after a failed start. Otherwise, move everything out of the
Communityfolder into a temporary folder elsewhere, then restart the simulator. Do not delete the packages or rename the entire installation directory. If it works, return add-ons in small groups until the failure reappears. - Check storage and repair the game files. Leave enough free space for updates, temporary files and caches. Steam users can verify the installed files. For an Xbox app or Microsoft Store installation on Windows, use the app's Repair option before Reset; Reset is more destructive and can remove local data. Consoles should be restarted after checking the installation and available storage.
- Remove PC launch conflicts. Close overlays, frame limiters, graphics injectors, hardware-monitoring tools and peripheral utilities for one test. Return CPU, GPU and memory overclocks to their normal settings. Update the graphics driver, then check security-software quarantine history and permit the legitimate simulator and platform processes rather than disabling protection globally.
- Test another connection. Temporarily remove a VPN, proxy or custom network filter, restart the router and try Ethernet where possible. A mobile hotspot can be used briefly to identify a home-network problem, but MSFS 2024 can consume substantial data through streaming, so it is not a sensible permanent connection.
What if MSFS 2024 opens but will not load a flight?
If the main menu works, the launcher itself is no longer the problem; test the selected aircraft, airport, scenery and online data instead.
Use an included aircraft, a standard airport, clear weather and no Community add-ons. Avoid loading a saved flight for this test because it can preserve a broken aircraft or location dependency. If that clean flight works, add back one variable at a time.
- Only one aircraft fails: update or remove that aircraft and any required library packages.
- Only one airport fails: disable scenery for that location and check for overlapping airport packages.
- Every flight hangs: test without Community content, remove and recreate the rolling cache if the menu is accessible, and check online connectivity.
- It stops at the same percentage: do not assume that percentage identifies a particular file; use the clean-flight test to isolate content first.

Should I reinstall Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024?
Reinstall MSFS 2024 only after updates, a clean add-on test and file repair have failed.
A reinstall costs time and may leave the original Community folder, cache or synchronised configuration in place, allowing the same fault to return. Back up third-party packages and any local profiles you need, but test the fresh installation before restoring them. Do not use folder paths copied from MSFS 2020 guides: package locations vary by simulator edition, platform and installation choice.
If the failure began during installation or a package download never completed, repair that download first. If the simulator repeatedly opens and then closes despite a clean installation, treat it as a crash rather than a loading fault and investigate drivers, add-ons and hardware stability.
