Why does MSFS 2024 require an internet connection?

MSFS 2024 uses a cloud-streaming system rather than storing the entire simulator world and content library on your device. It fetches terrain, aerial imagery, photogrammetry and other assets as they are needed, keeping the initial installation smaller but making connectivity central to the simulator.

The connection is also used for account sign-in, entitlement checks, updates and server-backed features. The basic requirement applies on PC, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5; having the simulator installed locally does not place its entire streamed world on your storage.

A short dropout may not end the flight immediately, but scenery quality and online services can deteriorate. Already loaded or cached terrain may remain visible while new areas fall back to lower-detail data, stop loading correctly or trigger a bandwidth warning.

  1. Do not restart immediately. Keeping the flight open may preserve content already loaded into memory while the connection recovers.
  2. Reduce online demand. If the menus remain responsive, disable photogrammetry, multiplayer or live traffic that you do not need.
  3. Check the whole connection. Confirm that the platform is still online and pause other large downloads, cloud backups or video streams on the network.

Closing the simulator during an outage can make matters worse because the next launch may require fresh authentication or content that is not stored locally.

How fast does the internet connection need to be?

Connection stability matters as much as headline download speed. Packet loss, congested Wi-Fi and sharp speed fluctuations can cause streamed scenery problems even when a speed test reports a respectable maximum rate.

Use wired Ethernet where practical, or a strong uncongested Wi-Fi connection near the router. The published bandwidth tiers alongside the PC hardware requirements provide a useful baseline, but a stable connection generally performs better than an erratic link with a higher advertised speed.

How can you reduce MSFS 2024 data use?

The best approach is to cache frequently flown areas and disable online features that add little to your particular flight. These changes reduce bandwidth rather than making the simulator fully offline.

  • Keep the rolling cache enabled on a fast local drive with enough free space.
  • Do not clear the cache routinely; doing so forces useful scenery data to be downloaded again.
  • Disable photogrammetry when bandwidth is restricted or when its extra detail is unnecessary.
  • Turn off multiplayer and live traffic for flights where you will not use them.
  • Install frequently used content locally when the content library offers that option.
  • Avoid downloading simulator updates or add-ons immediately before a flight on a capped connection.
