Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 targets 30 FPS on both Xbox Series X and Series S. It is not a guaranteed lock: dense airports, complex airliners, traffic, weather and scenery streaming can cause dips, especially on Series S. A VRR display can make fluctuations smoother, but do not expect either console to hold 60 FPS.

Do Series X and Series S have the same frame rate?

Both consoles aim for the same 30 FPS baseline target, but Series X generally holds it more consistently. Its extra hardware headroom also helps when flying detailed aircraft around large airports and dense cities.

Can MSFS 2024 reach 60 FPS on Xbox?

MSFS 2024 can run above 30 FPS in lighter scenes with a suitable VRR setup, but Xbox does not provide a dependable, locked 60 FPS mode. A complex aircraft at a busy hub may remain near 30 FPS or drop below it even when the console is connected to a 120 Hz television.

Refresh rate is not the same as rendered frame rate. A television reporting 120 Hz only confirms its display mode; it does not prove that the simulator is producing 120 unique frames per second. VRR matches the display more closely to changing frame delivery, reducing judder and tearing, but it cannot remove a CPU or graphics bottleneck. Why does MSFS 2024 drop below 30 FPS on Xbox?

Frame rate drops when the simulation, rendering and scenery-streaming workloads exceed the console's available headroom. The most common causes are:

  • Busy airports and traffic: AI aircraft, multiplayer traffic, ground vehicles and airport activity add simulation work.
  • Complex aircraft: Detailed airliners with multiple cockpit displays and extensive systems place a heavier load on the main simulation thread than a simple light aircraft.
  • Dense scenery and weather: Large cities, detailed add-on airports, low-altitude flying and extensive cloud layers increase rendering demand.
  • Third-party content: A demanding aircraft or airport can reduce performance even if the same console runs default content smoothly elsewhere.
  • Scenery streaming problems: Poor bandwidth or server interruptions can produce pauses, texture pop-in and delayed scenery loading. These hitches can resemble low FPS but have a different cause.

How can I improve MSFS 2024 frame rate on Xbox?

Enable VRR where supported, reduce simulated traffic and airport activity, and fully restart a session that has deteriorated after suspension. Xbox offers fewer graphics controls than PC, so reducing the simulated workload is usually more effective than searching for a hidden performance preset.

  1. Check what you are measuring. The standard Xbox version does not include the PC Developer Mode FPS overlay. A television's gaming panel may show its refresh rate rather than the simulator's true FPS; our guide to FPS counters on PC and Xbox explains the limitation.
  2. Configure the display correctly. Enable Game Mode and VRR on both the Xbox and compatible television or monitor. Confirm that the chosen HDMI input supports the required refresh-rate features.
  3. Reduce traffic first. Lower AI, multiplayer and airport activity settings one group at a time. This is especially useful at major hubs and on Series S.
  4. Run a clean comparison. Test a default aircraft at a quiet airport in simple weather, then repeat the demanding flight. If only the complex aircraft, add-on airport or heavy weather performs poorly, the console itself is not the sole cause.
  5. Restart and check streaming. If performance worsens after a suspended or unusually long session, quit the simulator fully and relaunch it. Investigate the network when pauses arrive with missing or delayed scenery rather than persistently slow camera movement.

For normal Xbox flying, a stable 30 FPS with even frame pacing is the realistic goal. Series X is more likely to sustain it, while Series S reaches the same target with less reserve for detailed aircraft, airports and traffic.
