Microsoft Flight Simulator (MSFS) ATC gives incorrect taxi instructions when the airport’s hidden taxiway network does not match the pavement, signs or chart you see. ATC routes along scenery data rather than visually reading the airport, so outdated layouts, broken links, duplicate add-ons or a wrong active runway create detours, bad names and dead ends.
Why taxiway names and routes go wrong in MSFS
An MSFS taxi route is only as accurate as the ground-routing data built into that airport. Beneath the visible scenery is a network of taxiway points, paths, parking connections and runway links. ATC calculates its route through that network and reads the taxiway names assigned to those links.
The pavement, signs and routing network are separate scenery elements. An airport can therefore look accurate while its hidden links remain outdated, disconnected or incorrectly labelled. This is particularly common after a real airport renames taxiways, closes a runway or rebuilds an apron.

How do I fix wrong ATC taxi instructions?
Isolate the runway, parking stand and scenery package before changing unrelated simulator settings.
- Confirm the actual error. Compare the complete ATC clearance, assigned runway, Taxi Ribbon, airport signs and chart. A route to an unexpected runway may be internally correct even though the runway assignment itself is unsuitable.
- Keep the runway constant. Use a fixed weather preset while testing so changing wind does not alter the active runway between attempts. If ATC consistently chooses the wrong runway, use our separate steps for troubleshooting bad runway assignments and ATC vectors.
- Try another parking position. A single gate or stand may have a missing connection to the airport’s taxi network. If another stand works, the fault is probably local to that parking spot rather than the whole airport.
- Run a clean scenery test. On PC, temporarily move airport-related packages out of the
Communityfolder and disable other versions of the same airport where package management permits. On console, remove or disable the airport add-on through the simulator’s content management system. Restart MSFS before retesting; simply returning to the main menu may leave scenery data loaded. - Restore packages one at a time. Check airport replacements, regional enhancements and packages that modify airport data. Two add-ons can alter the same location even when only one supplies the visible terminal. - Update the simulator and airport content. A corrected airport package can repair renamed paths or broken links. Updating an aircraft or recalibrating controls will not change airport ground-routing data.
- Treat a repeatable stock-airport fault as a data limitation. If the route remains wrong with all add-ons disabled, taxi manually using signs and a suitable chart, or use corrected airport scenery when one is available for your platform.
Deleting the rolling cache is not a good first fix. It mainly affects streamed world data and normally does not repair a compiled taxiway network. Rebuild it only when the airport scenery itself is failing to load correctly, not merely because ATC chose a bad route.
Can AIRAC data or the FMC fix the taxi route?
No; changing the flight plan or programming the aircraft’s FMC will not repair an MSFS taxiway network. The flight plan provides departure context, while the ground route comes primarily from the airport scenery and ATC’s selected runway.
Navigation-data updates may correct runway or procedure identifiers, but they generally cannot reconnect a broken parking link or add a missing taxiway junction. If only one add-on airport is affected, inspect that scenery before replacing navigation data.
Should I follow an obviously unsafe taxi clearance?
No; do not follow a route that crosses obstacles, leaves the paved surface or causes a runway incursion merely because built-in ATC displayed it. Stop, check the assigned runway and taxi using the airport signs or chart instead.

Can I enter a custom taxi route into MSFS ATC?
No; built-in MSFS ATC does not provide a pilot-editable field for entering a complete taxi route. You can choose a different runway or parking position when the available ATC options permit it, but ATC still calculates the path through the airport’s own taxiway network.
If that network is defective, the practical choices are to taxi manually, select another stand or runway, remove the conflicting scenery, or replace the airport with a corrected version.
