Why does MSFS ATC give incorrect taxi instructions?

Microsoft Flight Simulator ATC gives incorrect taxi instructions when an airport’s hidden ground-routing network does not match its visible pavement, signs or real-world chart. In both MSFS 2020 and MSFS 2024, outdated airport data, broken stand links, conflicting scenery, mislabelled taxiways or an unsuitable active runway can produce wrong names, detours and dead ends.

Why does MSFS ATC send me down the wrong taxiway?

MSFS ATC calculates taxi instructions from an invisible network of paths, junctions, parking connections and runway links built into the airport scenery. It does not look at the rendered pavement or read the signs as a human controller would.

Taxiway surfaces, painted markings, signs and routing links are separate scenery elements. An airport can look convincing while its underlying route contains an old taxiway name, a missing junction or a stand connection that ends on the grass. Changes at the real airport may also post-date the simulated version.

A mistake we see constantly is comparing a new real-world chart with an older simulated airport and assuming the chart alone proves the clearance is broken. Check the chart’s effective date against the airport layout represented in the simulator.

How do I fix wrong ATC taxi instructions?

Fix incorrect taxi instructions by isolating the assigned runway, parking stand and airport package before changing unrelated settings.

  1. Record the complete clearance. Note the assigned runway, every taxiway name and any hold-short instruction. A route may look strange because ATC selected a different departure runway, not because its ground path is broken. If the taxi option is missing or appears at the wrong stage, check the correct built-in ATC taxi-clearance workflow.
  2. Check the active runway first. Compare the assignment with the ATIS and wind. Retest with a fixed weather preset so a wind change does not alter the runway between attempts. If the runway itself is unsuitable, use our runway, vector and altitude troubleshooting steps before investigating the taxiways.
  3. Compare three sources. Check the ATC wording against the airport signs, a chart representing the same layout and the on-screen Taxi Ribbon or taxi guidance. Do not assume a live chart must match an older airport model.
  4. Try another parking position. Select a nearby stand on the same apron and repeat the test with the same runway and weather. If the second stand works, the original parking connector is probably defective.
  5. Test the airport without add-ons. On PC, temporarily move relevant packages out of the Community folder and disable any other installed version of the same airport through the available package controls. On Xbox or PlayStation, disable or uninstall the airport replacement through the simulator’s library or content controls where available.
  6. Restart MSFS fully. Returning to the main menu may not reload every scenery component. Close and reopen the simulator before deciding whether removing a package fixed the route.
  7. Restore packages individually. Add airport replacements, regional enhancements and other scenery packages back one at a time. Two packages can conflict even when only one provides the visible terminal buildings.
  8. Update the affected airport content. A corrected scenery package can repair taxiway labels and ground links. Updating the aircraft, resetting controls or reprogramming the avionics cannot repair the airport network.
  9. Work around a repeatable default-airport fault. If the same problem remains with add-ons removed, taxi manually using signs and an appropriate chart, choose another stand or runway, or use corrected airport scenery available for your platform.

Deleting the rolling cache is not a good first fix. The cache mainly affects streamed world imagery and normally does not rebuild taxiway routing compiled into an airport package. Rebuild it only if the airport’s visible scenery is also stale, missing or loading incorrectly.

Does the Taxi Ribbon prove that ATC is wrong?

The Taxi Ribbon helps identify the fault, but it is not an independent source because it normally follows the same airport routing network used by built-in ATC.

  • Sensible ribbon, wrong spoken names: the path links are probably connected, but their taxiway labels are incorrect.
  • Ribbon and ATC follow the same impossible route: the hidden network is probably broken or outdated.
  • Ribbon differs from the chart but matches the signs: the simulated airport may represent a different construction period.
  • Ribbon crosses a runway: stop at the hold-short line unless ATC has explicitly cleared you to cross.

Can AIRAC data or the FMC fix an MSFS taxi route?

No; navigation-data updates and aircraft flight-management systems do not rebuild the airport’s ground-routing network.

Navigation data may change runway identifiers, procedures or the departure context used by the flight plan. That can influence which runway ATC assigns, but it cannot reconnect an isolated parking stand, correct a taxiway label or add a missing junction. If one airport is affected, inspect its scenery packages before changing aircraft navigation data.

Should I follow an obviously unsafe taxi instruction?

No; stop rather than following a route across obstacles, unpaved ground or an uncleared runway.

Use the chart, signs and markings to choose a safe paved route, and hold short of every runway unless ATC has cleared you to cross or enter it. Built-in ATC may repeat its instruction, issue a warning or stop providing normal services after you deviate, but that is preferable to practising an unsafe procedure. Can I enter a custom taxi route into MSFS ATC?

No; built-in MSFS ATC does not provide a pilot-editable field for entering a complete custom taxi route.

The available menu options may let you request another runway or choose a different parking position, but ATC still calculates its route from the airport’s own taxi network. The Taxi Ribbon is guidance rather than an editor, and entering waypoints in the FMC does not alter ground instructions.

When the network is defective, the practical choices are to select another stand or runway, remove conflicting scenery, install a corrected airport package or taxi manually.
