Why does MSFS stall when loading a flight after an update?

Microsoft Flight Simulator usually stalls while loading a flight after an update because an add-on no longer matches the sim, a required content package was only partly updated, or cached scenery data is stale. First test a default aircraft and airport with add-ons disabled; reinstalling the whole simulator should be the last step.

What causes MSFS to hang after an update?

An update can expose compatibility problems that were harmless under the previous build. Microsoft Flight Simulator may reach the main menu normally, then stall when the flight loader requests the affected aircraft, airport, scenery library or shared avionics package.

• Incompatible add-ons: aircraft, avionics, liveries, scenery, navdata and utility packages can all prevent a flight from loading.
• Incomplete content packages: the application update may be installed while official or optional content remains pending, damaged or short of storage space.
• Stale cache data: rolling or manual cache files can still contain references created before the update.
• Saved-flight conflicts: an old saved flight may request an aircraft, airport or dependency that has changed or been removed.
• Online-data trouble: a coincidental server, account or connection problem can make streamed world data appear to be a post-update fault.

An empty Community folder does not rule out an add-on conflict. Marketplace packages and other installed optional content are stored elsewhere and may still be active.

How do I fix MSFS stalling on the flight loading screen?

The quickest reliable fix is to reduce the simulator to a known-good default flight, then restore content in controlled groups.

1. Finish every update layer. Fully close Microsoft Flight Simulator, restart the PC or console and inspect the platform's download queue. Launch the sim again and check its content-management screen for pending or failed packages. If downloads repeatedly restart, fail or report insufficient space, follow our checks for repairing incomplete MSFS updates before changing anything else.
2. Create a fresh baseline flight. Do not reopen the same saved flight. Select a standard aircraft supplied with the simulator, a default airport away from complex add-on scenery, clear weather and no imported route. If that loads, the core simulator is probably intact.
3. Start without add-ons. Choose Safe Mode if Microsoft Flight Simulator offers it after an abnormal shutdown. On PC, close the sim and temporarily move the contents of the active Community folder elsewhere; do not delete them. Install location changes often leave users inspecting the wrong folder, so use our instructions for finding the Community folder actually in use. On Xbox, or PlayStation for MSFS 2024, disable or remove optional third-party packages through the simulator's content-management tools where available.
4. Isolate the failed package. If the baseline flight now works, restore add-ons in halves rather than one at a time. Retest after each group. Once a group causes the stall, split that group again until the culprit is identified. Update or remove the affected package and any shared library it requires.
5. Clear the rolling cache. Delete the rolling cache through the simulator's data settings, restart MSFS and recreate the cache only if you use it. Do not delete random package files manually. 6. Test without online data. Temporarily disable live traffic, live weather, photogrammetry and other streamed data options that your version provides. A successful offline test points towards connectivity, account services or streamed scenery rather than the aircraft itself.
7. Repair before reinstalling. If every default aircraft and airport still hangs with add-ons removed, caches cleared and packages complete, use the platform's repair or verification function. Back up personal add-ons first because repair behaviour and download size vary between PC clients and consoles.

How can I identify which component is failing?

The scope of the loading stall usually identifies the responsible package faster than repeated reinstalls.

A stall means the loading screen remains active without completing. If MSFS closes to the desktop, freezes the whole system or returns to the console dashboard, use the separate diagnosis for post-update crashes; graphics drivers, memory pressure and overlays then become more relevant.

How long should the first flight take after an update?

There is no trustworthy fixed time because hardware, package count, connection speed and the selected location all affect loading. The first launch may spend longer indexing packages or rebuilding data, especially with a large add-on collection.

A moving spinner alone does not prove that loading is progressing. On PC, ongoing disk or network activity suggests MSFS is still working; repeated attempts that stop at the same point with no activity suggest a genuine hang. Testing a simple default flight is more useful than waiting indefinitely on a complex saved flight.

Should I reinstall Microsoft Flight Simulator?

No—reinstallation is justified only after default flights fail in a clean configuration and package repair has not worked. A full reinstall wastes time when one aircraft, scenery package or cache file is responsible, and restoring every add-on immediately afterwards can recreate the same stall.
