How do I open and close passenger doors in Train Simulator Classic?

Ian Stephens
In short

Learn how to open and close passenger doors in Train Simulator Classic, use the T key correctly and fix doors that will not release.

In Train Simulator Classic, stop with the passenger coaches beside the platform, apply the brake and press T. The simulator normally opens the doors on the platform side and starts the loading countdown. When loading finishes, the doors close automatically; wait for the station task to confirm completion before taking power.

How do you open passenger doors at a station?

For standard Train Simulator Classic passenger services, T is the load/unload command rather than a universal manual door switch.

  1. Stop at the scheduled platform. Position the passenger coaches within the platform area, following the scenario's stopping marker where one is provided.
  2. Bring the train to a complete stand. Hold it with the train brake so it cannot roll.
  3. Press T once. The appropriate doors should open and the passenger-loading indicator or countdown should begin.
  4. Wait for loading to finish. Do not depart merely because the timetable says it is time; wait for the task confirmation and closed doors.

You can also use the relevant load/unload control on the on-screen interface where the selected locomotive exposes one. Train Simulator Classic retains the keyboard-and-mouse approach described in our overview of the RailWorks control system, although the HUD artwork varies between releases and rolling stock.

Do the doors close automatically?

Standard scenario-controlled passenger doors normally close automatically when the loading period ends.

Some advanced or third-party trains simulate separate door release, close and interlock controls. Their cab buttons or custom key assignments can override the normal behaviour, so follow the manual supplied with that particular train. If its instructions treat T as a toggle, press it again only after loading is complete.

Why will the passenger doors not open?

Most door failures happen because the train is outside the recognised platform area, is still moving or uses a custom door procedure.

  • The train is not fully stopped: reduce speed to zero and hold the brake before pressing T.
  • The coaches missed the platform marker: move carefully until at least the passenger portion of the consist overlaps the platform. Stopping only the locomotive beside the platform may not register correctly.
  • This is not an active passenger stop: a scenario may require a specific scheduled platform or may not include a passenger-pick-up instruction at all.
  • The key has been reassigned: check the simulator's control settings and make sure the game window has keyboard focus.
  • The rolling stock uses scripted doors: set up the cab as required and use the train-specific release control. Older coaches may also lack visible animated doors even when the loading task is working.

If positioning or braking is the problem, our Train Simulator Classic driving and station-stop guidance covers the basic controls without duplicating them here.

Can I choose which side of the train opens?

For ordinary station tasks, Train Simulator Classic uses the platform and scenario data to determine which side should open when you press T.

Advanced trains may provide independent left- and right-side releases through cab controls or custom keys. If standard stock opens on the wrong side, the likely cause is incorrectly configured platform data, an unusual consist direction or a scenario-editing problem rather than a global door-side setting.

Why will the train not move after the doors close?

A passenger unit may withhold traction until every door is closed and its door interlock has cleared.

Wait for the loading task and door animation to finish, then check the cab's door or interlock indicator before applying power. With advanced stock, you may need to operate its dedicated close control; repeatedly opening the doors or taking power early can reset the loading process or prevent the scenario from recording a valid stop.
