You can play X-Plane Mobile offline after downloading aircraft and scenery. Learn what needs internet access and how to test it before travel.
Yes. X-Plane Mobile can be played offline once the app, chosen aircraft and required scenery regions have been downloaded and successfully loaded while connected. Internet access is still needed for installation, additional downloads, updates, purchase or subscription checks, and inherently online functions such as multiplayer.
What works in X-Plane Mobile without internet?
Offline mode covers content stored locally on the device, not the complete online catalogue or services that retrieve data during use.
| Feature | Works offline? | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| Single-player flying | Yes | The aircraft and scenery must already be installed. |
| Downloaded aircraft | Usually | The app must have validated any purchase or subscription entitlement. |
| Downloaded scenery regions | Yes | All required scenery data must be stored on the device. |
| New aircraft or scenery downloads | No | A connection is required to obtain the files. |
| Multiplayer and live online services | No | These depend on an active connection. |
| Account or entitlement checks | Not always | The app may request a connection periodically or after an account change. |
How should you prepare X-Plane Mobile for offline use?
The reliable method is to preload and cold-start the exact aircraft and region you plan to use before losing internet access.
- Connect to a reliable network. Install pending app updates and sign in to the account associated with your purchases or subscription.
- Download the required content. Obtain the aircraft and every scenery region needed for the planned flight, including the destination and any area you may divert across.
- Load a complete flight. Start in the chosen aircraft and wait until the cockpit and scenery appear correctly. This confirms that the content is present and usable.
- Perform a cold-start test. Close X-Plane Mobile fully, enable flight mode, then reopen the app and start the same flight. Do not merely disconnect after the cockpit has loaded.
- Preserve the downloaded files. Avoid clearing app storage, reinstalling the app or allowing storage-cleaning tools to remove its data before travelling.
A mistake we see constantly is switching off Wi-Fi after a flight has already loaded. That proves the active session can continue; it does not prove that X-Plane Mobile can launch and validate its content offline. Does every scenery region work offline?
No. Only the scenery included with the installed app or downloaded to the device is available offline.
If a route leaves the stored area, X-Plane Mobile cannot obtain missing scenery while disconnected. Download a wider area than the direct route requires, then check the device has enough free storage for the completed files.
Can purchased aircraft be flown offline?
Purchased or subscription aircraft generally work offline after they have been downloaded and their entitlement has been validated, but indefinite offline access should not be assumed.
A licence check may be triggered after an update, account change, reinstall or an extended period without validation. Before a trip, reconnect, open the app, confirm the aircraft is available and repeat the cold-start test in flight mode.
Why does X-Plane Mobile fail when offline?
An offline failure usually means content is missing, incomplete or awaiting an account check rather than that all offline flying is unsupported.
- The scenery was never fully downloaded: reconnect and allow the relevant region to finish before testing again.
- The aircraft is only listed, not stored locally: select and load it once while online.
- The entitlement needs validation: reconnect using the account that owns the purchase or subscription and confirm access.
- An update or reinstall removed local data: download the aircraft and scenery again.
- The operating system reclaimed storage: check available space and any automatic app-offloading or storage-cleaning settings.
- An online-only feature was selected: switch to a local single-player flight.
Is X-Plane Mobile offline mode the same as X-Plane 12?
No. X-Plane Mobile and desktop X-Plane 12 are separate products with different installations, content and licence behaviour.
Our comparison of the mobile app with X-Plane 12 explains which features belong to each version. Desktop users should instead follow the specific guidance on preparing X-Plane 12 for offline use.
