Can X-Plane 12 be used offline?

Ian Stephens
In short

Yes—X-Plane 12 works offline after installation and activation. See which features need internet and how to prepare for reliable offline flying.

Yes. X-Plane 12 can be flown offline once the simulator, licence and required scenery are installed and activated. The core flight model, aircraft, airports, local scenery, manual weather and saved flights do not need a continuous connection. Internet-only features, updates and streamed scenery will be unavailable.

Which X-Plane 12 features work without internet?

Normal single-player flying works offline because X-Plane runs its simulation and installed content locally.

FeatureWorks offline?Caveat
Flight model, controls and failuresYesNo network connection is required.
Default and add-on aircraftUsuallyThe aircraft must be installed locally; some commercial add-ons perform separate licence checks.
Airports and terrainYesOnly installed scenery regions and local add-ons remain available.
FMS, GPS and G1000YesThey use the navigation database installed on the computer. Downloading newer data or online charts still requires internet.
WeatherYes, when configured manuallyFresh real-world weather cannot be downloaded offline.
Built-in ATC and AI aircraftYesExternal ATC networks and internet multiplayer do not work.
Replays and saved flightsYesFiles must be stored locally rather than dependent on cloud synchronisation.

X-Plane's GPS receivers do not require an internet connection to determine the simulated aircraft's position. What becomes outdated offline is the installed navigation database, not the GPS function itself.

What still needs an internet connection?

Downloading, connected services and content that is streamed rather than permanently installed all require internet access.

  • Initial installation and activation: A digital copy must download simulator files and validate its product key. Our installation and activation walkthrough explains what must be completed while connected.
  • Updates and additional scenery: Simulator updates, missing terrain regions and newly purchased or downloaded add-ons cannot be retrieved offline.
  • Real-world weather: Live conditions need a weather download. Manual or preset conditions are the offline alternative covered in our weather configuration guidance.
  • Online flying: Internet multiplayer, external ATC networks and shared-flight services need an active connection.
  • Streamed scenery: Add-ons that fetch orthophoto tiles while flying may show missing or low-detail terrain without internet. This is especially relevant when using AutoOrtho and its downloaded imagery.
  • Third-party services: Online charts, maps, traffic feeds and add-on licence servers follow their own connection requirements.

How do I prepare X-Plane 12 for offline use?

A reliable offline setup must be installed, activated and tested before the internet connection is removed.

  1. Finish the installation. Install X-Plane 12, its updates and every terrain region you expect to visit. Check that the relevant files exist under Global Scenery or Custom Scenery.
  2. Confirm activation. Start the simulator while online and load a flight to the cockpit without an activation or demo-mode prompt. Store-platform editions should also be prepared using that platform's supported offline mode.
  3. Replace streamed content where necessary. Permanently installed scenery is more predictable than a tile cache. Do not assume that flying over an area once has cached every resolution and tile needed later.
  4. Select manual weather. Configure wind, cloud and visibility yourself rather than selecting real-world weather.
  5. Test a cold offline start. Close X-Plane and its distribution client, disconnect the network, then launch everything again. A mistake we see often is testing only after the simulator is already running, which does not expose start-up validation or plugin problems.

Can X-Plane 12 remain offline indefinitely?

A digital-download copy should not be assumed to remain authorised indefinitely because it may require periodic online licence validation. Connect and launch X-Plane before an extended period without internet, especially after an update, hardware change or long gap between flights.

A computer that will never be connected is a different case: the downloadable edition still needs internet for installation and initial activation. Physical editions use the licensing method supplied with that edition, while third-party aircraft and plugins may impose independent online checks.

Why will X-Plane 12 not start offline?

The usual causes are incomplete activation, a distribution client that was not prepared for offline use, or a plugin waiting for an online service.

  • If X-Plane requests activation or enters demo mode, reconnect temporarily and validate the licence.
  • If the distribution client refuses to start, sign in while connected, complete pending updates, run X-Plane once and enable the client's supported offline mode before disconnecting.
  • If the simulator stalls while loading, temporarily disable network-dependent plugins. Moving the suspect plugin out of Resources/plugins and restarting is a useful diagnostic step.
  • If an add-on aircraft reports a licence error, validate that product while online; X-Plane's own activation does not authorise third-party products.

Why are terrain or weather missing offline?

Missing terrain means the scenery was not installed locally or a streaming add-on cannot retrieve its tiles; unchanged weather means the live feed cannot refresh.

Install all required scenery before disconnecting and verify it by loading flights at the intended airports. For weather, select a manual preset rather than relying on the last downloaded conditions, which may be stale or unavailable after restarting.
