Can Prepar3D run on macOS or Linux?

Prepar3D does not run natively on macOS or Linux; Lockheed Martin supports it on Windows. An Intel Mac may run it by booting into Windows, and a Linux PC may dual-boot Windows, but virtual machines, Wine and Proton are unsupported and often fail with graphics, activation, peripherals or add-ons.

Why is Prepar3D limited to Windows?

Prepar3D is built as a Windows application around Microsoft graphics and system components. There is no macOS application, Linux package or alternative native rendering backend supplied with it.

The required DirectX version varies between Prepar3D generations, but each version expects a compatible Windows graphics driver and the DirectX feature level stated in its requirements. Copying the installation to a macOS or Linux partition cannot replace those components.

Does Prepar3D work through Boot Camp on a Mac?

An eligible Intel-based Mac can potentially run Prepar3D after booting into a full Windows installation. This is not a native Mac version: Windows controls the hardware and must provide a suitable graphics driver.

Many Intel Macs have limited graphics performance, so check the GPU, memory and storage rather than assuming any Boot Camp installation will be adequate. Macs with Apple silicon cannot use Boot Camp to start Windows directly. Running Windows in a virtual machine instead introduces an ARM operating system, processor translation and a virtual GPU, none of which forms a supported Prepar3D configuration.

Can Wine or Proton run Prepar3D on Linux?

Wine and Proton do not provide a dependable or supported way to run Prepar3D on Linux. A particular build might reach the installer or launcher, but that does not establish compatibility with the simulator, aircraft and supporting utilities.

Failure points commonly include:

  • Windows runtime prerequisites, installers and licence activation
  • DirectX translation, shader compilation and virtual video memory reporting
  • SimConnect-dependent utilities and add-on installers
  • Aircraft gauges or modules containing Windows-specific code
  • USB flight controls, force feedback, head tracking and VR
  • Updates that stop working in an existing Wine prefix

Is a virtual machine suitable for Prepar3D?

An ordinary virtual machine is a poor choice for Prepar3D because its virtual GPU may not expose the required DirectX features or enough graphics memory. Performance is also shared with the host operating system, while controllers and VR devices must pass correctly into the Windows guest.

On Linux, direct GPU passthrough to a Windows virtual machine can reduce part of the graphics penalty, but it requires suitable hardware and advanced configuration. Prepar3D is still running in Windows, and every USB device, add-on and activation component needs separate checking.

What is the best option for Mac or Linux users?

A native Windows installation is the practical choice when Prepar3D itself or a Prepar3D-only add-on is required. Choose the setup according to the software and hardware you already own:

  1. Intel Mac: consider a separate Windows installation only if the Mac has a suitable dedicated GPU and supported drivers.
  2. Apple silicon Mac: use a simulator with native macOS support rather than buying Prepar3D on the assumption that Windows virtualisation will work.
  3. Linux PC: dual-boot into Windows for Prepar3D, or select a simulator with an official Linux build.

The key distinction is between running Prepar3D on Mac or PC hardware and running it under macOS or Linux. Compatible hardware may start Windows and then run Prepar3D, but Prepar3D itself remains a Windows simulator.
