Prepar3D does not run natively on macOS. You can run it on an Intel Mac by booting a Windows version supported by your Prepar3D release, provided the Mac meets its hardware requirements. Apple silicon Macs are a poor fit: virtualised Windows on ARM adds architecture, graphics-driver and add-on compatibility problems.

Can Prepar3D run on macOS without Windows?

No. Prepar3D is a Windows application built around DirectX, Windows services and a Windows-based installation process. There is no macOS executable, and copying a working Prepar3D folder from a PC will not make it run on a Mac.

A Windows compatibility layer is not a dependable substitute. Even if the base simulator starts, aircraft, weather engines, SimConnect clients, licence services and controller software may depend on Windows components that the layer does not reproduce correctly.

Which Mac setup actually works?

An Intel Mac booted directly into compatible Windows is the only practical way to run Prepar3D on Mac hardware itself.

Boot Camp is different from a virtual machine because Windows receives direct access to the Intel processor and graphics hardware. That removes the virtual-GPU bottleneck, although it does not turn an underpowered or unsupported Mac into a suitable Prepar3D computer.

How do I run Prepar3D on an Intel Mac?

Use Boot Camp Assistant to install Windows directly, then treat the Mac as a Windows PC while Prepar3D is running.

  1. Confirm that the Mac has an Intel processor. The processor or chip shown under About This Mac must say Intel. Boot Camp is not available on Apple silicon Macs.
  2. Match the simulator requirements. Check the operating system, DirectX capability, graphics hardware, memory and storage required by your exact Prepar3D generation. Our guide to Prepar3D's Windows and hardware requirements explains the main thresholds.
  3. Check the Windows support overlap. The Windows version must be suitable for Prepar3D and have working Boot Camp drivers for that Mac. Many Intel Macs have official support aimed at Windows 10 rather than Windows 11, so also consider the operating system's security lifecycle instead of forcing an unsupported upgrade.
  4. Back up and create the Windows partition. Use Boot Camp Assistant rather than manually altering the disk. Allow room for the simulator, temporary installer files, aircraft and scenery; a common mistake is creating a small partition that becomes difficult to resize later.
  5. Install the Windows hardware drivers. Finish installing Apple's Windows support package and the appropriate graphics driver before installing Prepar3D. Confirm that sound, networking and USB controllers work inside Windows.
  6. Install and test Prepar3D cleanly. Run the normal Windows installer and test a default aircraft at a default airport first. Add controllers and add-ons individually so a faulty module or incompatible aircraft can be identified immediately.

Why is virtualised Windows a poor choice?

A virtual machine places a virtual graphics adapter between Prepar3D and the Mac's GPU. Prepar3D may require DirectX features that the virtual adapter does not expose, even when the virtual-machine software advertises general DirectX support.

Apple silicon adds another layer. Windows on ARM must translate the simulator's x64 code, while the virtual machine translates its graphics calls for macOS. Prepar3D add-ons can also contain DLLs, background services or hardware drivers that do not work through the same translation chain.

What usually fails first?

Graphics support is usually the first failure point, followed by performance, peripherals and add-on compatibility.

  • Black screen or DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG: the virtual or Boot Camp graphics driver may not provide the required feature level reliably. If the error also occurs when Windows is booted directly, follow our methodical Prepar3D crash checks rather than repeatedly reinstalling.
  • Very low frame rate: a high-resolution Mac display can overwhelm an older mobile GPU. Lower the simulator's display resolution first, then reduce anti-aliasing, shadows and scenery density.
  • Missing aircraft or utilities: an add-on may target a different Prepar3D generation or rely on unsupported Windows components. Verify both the simulator version and the add-on's processor architecture.
  • Joystick or throttle not detected: virtual machines require USB passthrough, and specialist controls may need Windows drivers. Boot Camp usually avoids passthrough because the device connects directly to Windows.

What should Apple silicon Mac users choose?

If Prepar3D itself is mandatory, use a suitable Windows PC. You can display that PC remotely on the Mac, but latency and USB forwarding make remote access better for configuration or scenario management than precise hand flying.

For a simulator that runs directly on macOS, X-Plane is the more practical choice. Individual plug-ins still need to support the relevant Mac processor and simulator release, so compare the platform and add-on differences in our Prepar3D and X-Plane comparison before changing platforms.

  • Choose a native Mac simulator when staying entirely within macOS matters most.
