Fix Prepar3D v5 scenery loading late or in chunks by diagnosing LOD, frame-rate, storage, VRAM and add-on bottlenecks.
Scenery loads in chunks or appears late in Prepar3D v5 when the terrain and object loaders cannot prepare data as quickly as the aircraft reaches it. An excessive Level of Detail Radius, heavy autogen, an unlimited frame rate, slow storage, VRAM pressure or a faulty add-on are common causes; square tiles are a typical symptom.
Prepar3D v5 streams terrain mesh, ground textures, autogen and scenery-library objects separately. One component can therefore lag while everything else remains visible. Fast low-level flight, camera slewing and sudden viewpoint changes expose this most clearly.
What do different loading symptoms mean?
The appearance and location of the delayed scenery usually identify which part of the loading process is struggling.

How do I stop Prepar3D v5 scenery loading late?
Use a repeatable stock test, then remove one bottleneck at a time instead of changing every graphics option together.
- Confirm that it is a loading backlog. Pause the flight when a tile is missing. If it fills after a short wait, the content exists and the loader is falling behind. A tile that never appears points instead to missing files, registration or a conflict.
- Establish a stock baseline. Repeat the same route with a default aircraft and default scenery, temporarily disabling local scenery add-ons. Keep the location, weather and view similar so the comparison is meaningful.
- Set a finite frame-rate target. Choose a target Prepar3D can hold in the busiest part of the flight. Running unlimited may consume CPU and GPU time that the background scenery work needs.
- Reduce scenery load gradually. Lower Level of Detail Radius first for late terrain cells, then Autogen Draw Distance and density for delayed buildings and trees. Lower Texture Resolution when high-resolution ground imagery or VRAM use is the problem.
- Check every drive involved. The simulator may be on one drive while an add-on library is on another. Slow hard disks, sleeping external drives, cloud-synchronised folders, low free space and simultaneous indexing or security scans can all delay texture reads. An SSD is preferable for both the simulator and frequently used scenery.
- Remove legacy configuration tweaks. Old FSX or earlier Prepar3D tuning values can restrict the loader or assign CPU work badly. With Prepar3D closed, back up and rename
%APPDATA%\Lockheed Martin\Prepar3D v5\Prepar3D.cfg, then let the simulator generate a clean file. This resets many display settings, so record them first. - Reintroduce add-ons individually. If stock scenery works, enable scenery packages one at a time until the delay returns. This separates an excessively demanding package from a missing-file or priority problem.
Which scenery settings should I lower first?
Lower the setting that matches the delayed element rather than applying a blanket low preset.
- Late terrain squares: reduce Level of Detail Radius first. This cuts the amount of terrain Prepar3D must prepare around the aircraft.

- High-resolution photo scenery loading late: reduce Texture Resolution if VRAM or disk throughput is saturated. Do not reduce mesh resolution unless terrain geometry itself is the problem.
- One affected add-on only: leave global graphics settings alone initially and diagnose that package. Lowering every setting can hide an installation fault without fixing it.
Is chunk loading normal during fast or low flight?
Brief tile loading can be normal after slewing, changing location or flying very fast at low altitude because the camera reaches new terrain faster than the loader anticipated.
It is not normal for large areas to remain missing during an ordinary flight with default scenery. If pausing consistently lets the terrain catch up, reduce the workload or improve storage throughput. If pausing makes no difference, investigate content and configuration instead.
When is an add-on scenery responsible?
An add-on is the likely cause when the problem begins at a clear regional boundary, affects only one airport, or disappears as soon as that package is disabled.
Check that the package is registered for Prepar3D v5, its required libraries and texture folders are present, and no duplicate airport or terrain layer covers the same location. Scenery priority determines which overlapping layer wins; it does not cure a package whose files are absent or stored on an unavailable drive. A mistake we see constantly is copying random missing textures into a global Texture folder. That can conceal one faulty package while creating conflicts elsewhere. Repair or reinstall the affected add-on instead; reinstalling all of Prepar3D is justified only when stock scenery also fails after a clean configuration and a content repair.
