What must be ready before programming the A400M FMS?

The FMS accepts route entries while inertial alignment is running, but the aircraft needs a valid position and completed alignment before departure. Supply electrical power, switch on the required avionics and begin the aircraft's navigation-system alignment using the normal cockpit checklist.

How do I enter an A400M flight plan manually?

Manual entry is the most dependable method because it exposes missing procedures, duplicate fixes and route discontinuities before departure.

  1. Enter the city pair. Open the FMS initialisation page and enter the origin and destination using ICAO codes in the displayed format, such as EGLL/EDDF. Add the flight number, cruise level and cost index if those fields are available and required.
  2. Select the departure. Open the flight-plan page, select the origin airport and choose the departure runway, SID and transition matching your clearance. Confirm the temporary flight plan with the displayed INSERT or confirmation prompt.
  3. Add the en-route section. Enter individual waypoints into the scratchpad and place them on the next appropriate flight-plan line. For an airway, open the airway or lateral-revision page, enter the airway in the VIA field and its exit waypoint in the TO field.
  4. Resolve duplicate waypoint names. When the FMS presents several fixes with the same identifier, choose the one on the expected airway and near your route. Selecting a distant duplicate is a common cause of sharp turns and routes crossing entire continents.
  5. Select the arrival. Choose the destination's arrival page, followed by the expected runway or approach, STAR and transition. If ATC has not assigned an arrival, leave it open rather than guessing and rebuild that section when clearance is received.
  6. Inspect discontinuities. Use the unit's CLR or delete function only where two route segments should connect directly. Preserve a manual or vectors discontinuity when the procedure expects radar vectors; later, use a suitable direct-to or intercept as cleared.
  7. Enter weight and fuel data. Complete the zero-fuel weight, centre of gravity and block-fuel fields exposed by the installed aircraft version. Confirm the displayed units—a pounds value entered into a kilograms field will invalidate every subsequent calculation.
  8. Complete take-off performance. Enter or transfer the calculated V1, VR and V2 speeds, take-off configuration, trim and any altitude fields requested by the performance page. Use values calculated for the actual runway, weather, weight and configuration rather than copying numbers from another flight.
  9. Review the route. Display the flight plan in PLAN mode and step through every waypoint. Check for loops, unexpected turns, duplicated SID or STAR fixes, implausible altitude constraints and a first active leg that begins ahead of the aircraft.

A route modification may remain temporary until it is inserted. Leaving the FMS with an unconfirmed temporary plan is one of the most frequent reasons a corrected route disappears when another page is opened.

Can I import a flight plan instead?

Yes, but an imported route should be treated as a draft rather than a finished A400M flight plan.

You can build and verify the route in the MSFS planner, but seeing it in the simulator's EFB does not always mean it has reached the aircraft FMS. Use the available send-to-avionics or aircraft import command, then inspect the cockpit flight-plan page.

Why will the A400M not follow the programmed route?

Before engaging the autopilot, confirm that the FMS is the active navigation source, the flight directors are on and the aircraft is positioned to intercept the active leg. If it still refuses to engage or capture the route, work through our autopilot and route-intercept checks.

What should I check before take-off?

Before take-off, the displayed route, aircraft position and performance figures must all agree with the clearance and actual loading.

  • The correct departure runway, SID and first waypoint are active.
  • No unintended discontinuities, loops or duplicate waypoints remain.
  • The arrival and approach match the expected destination runway, or are deliberately left open.
  • Inertial alignment is complete and the map shows the aircraft at the correct airport.
  • Fuel, zero-fuel weight, centre of gravity and take-off speeds use the correct units.
  • The FMS is the selected navigation source and the first leg can be intercepted without a sharp reversal.

Vertical constraints in the FMS do not replace terrain awareness, charts or an ATC clearance. If the route changes after departure, modify and verify the affected section before allowing managed navigation to follow it.
