If you must recalibrate your joystick every time you fly, learn how to fix controller profiles, duplicate axes, USB faults and hardware drift.
In flight simulators, you should not need to recalibrate a joystick before every flight. Repeated calibration usually means the simulator is loading another controller profile, Windows is detecting the device differently, an axis is assigned twice, or the hardware is drifting. Test the joystick outside the simulator first to isolate the fault.
Is the joystick actually losing calibration?
Often, the joystick is not losing calibration at all. An aircraft that rolls, pitches or yaws with the stick centred may be reacting to trim, wind, propeller effects, asymmetric thrust or an autopilot conflict rather than a bad controller centre.

How do I stop recalibrating it before every flight?
A single diagnostic pass through Windows and the simulator will usually reveal why the calibration appears to reset.
- Connect the joystick consistently. Plug it in before launching the simulator and use the same direct USB port where practical. Temporarily remove hubs, extension cables and adapters while diagnosing the problem.
- Test the raw Windows input. Press
Win+R, enterjoy.cpl, select the controller and open its test display. Watch the axes without touching the stick, then move each one through its full range. Follow the manufacturer's utility where one is required, or the simulator's own process when it explicitly asks for calibration. Avoid repeatedly applying Windows, manufacturer and simulator calibration on top of one another. Our one-time PC joystick setup and calibration process covers the correct order.
- Check the active controller profile. Confirm that the simulator has selected your saved profile for the correct physical device. Some simulators can use different presets by aircraft, control mode or device instance.
- Remove duplicate axis assignments. Pitch, roll, yaw and throttle should each be assigned only where intended. Gamepads, rudder pedals, throttles and virtual controllers can receive automatic assignments that fight the joystick.
- Set dead zones only after testing. Use the smallest dead zone that removes minor centre noise. Sensitivity curves alter response; they do not repair unstable hardware or restore missing endpoints.
- Save and verify. Name the controller profile, apply the changes, close the simulator normally and reopen it. If the selected profile or bindings have changed, the problem is profile persistence rather than calibration.

Why are my joystick settings not being saved?
Calibration often appears not to save because the simulator has switched profiles or restored older controller settings. Common causes include:
- editing a temporary or default preset instead of a named custom profile;
- selecting the profile for a similarly named device rather than the active joystick;
- moving the controller to a port that causes it to be identified as another device instance;
- a virtual controller utility exposing both physical and virtual versions of the same axes;
- cloud synchronisation restoring an older controls configuration;
- the simulator closing unexpectedly before it writes the profile; or
- security software, account permissions or a read-only configuration preventing settings from being written.
A mistake we see constantly is recalibrating when the real problem is an automatically assigned second axis. If the cockpit controls twitch, resist your input or return to an unexpected position, search every connected device for duplicate pitch, roll, yaw and throttle bindings.
When should I recalibrate or replace the joystick?
Recalibrate only when the raw input no longer centres or reaches its full range, after a relevant firmware or driver change, or when the simulator requests calibration for a newly detected device. Routine recalibration is unnecessary when the Windows test remains stable.
If drift or jitter also appears in Windows, try another direct USB port, inspect detachable cables and connectors, and test without other controller software running. Persistent spikes, wandering input or lost range across ports and simulators points to the joystick's sensor, wiring or electronics. A dead zone may hide slight centre noise, but a large or worsening dead zone is a workaround for failing hardware, not a lasting calibration fix.
