Is Prepar3D free, and which licence do I need?

Ian Stephens
In short

Is Prepar3D free? Compare Personal, Academic, Professional and Professional Plus licences and learn which one matches your intended use.

No. Prepar3D is paid, licence-based software; there is no permanently free edition. Choose Personal for private home use where offered, Academic only if you meet its educational terms, Professional for commercial or professional training, and Professional Plus when its advanced military-oriented capabilities are specifically required.

Is there a free version of Prepar3D?

The Prepar3D base simulator is not freeware. A valid licence is required even if every aircraft, airport and utility you add afterwards costs nothing.

This distinction causes frequent confusion because plenty of third-party content is free. Our library of free Prepar3D aircraft, scenery and utilities contains add-ons rather than the simulator itself; each download still requires a compatible P3D installation and major version.

Which Prepar3D licence should I choose?

Your licence should match the user and intended use, not simply the cheapest price or the longest feature list. Licence categories can differ between major Prepar3D releases, so check the terms attached to the exact version being purchased.

LicenceUsually suitable forKey limitation
PersonalAn individual using a supported release privately at homeNot intended to cover business, institutional or commercial operation
AcademicUsers and organisations that satisfy that release's educational eligibility and use conditionsIt is not a generic low-cost licence for anyone who happens to be learning
ProfessionalProfessional, organisational, commercial or paid training useIt does not provide better frame rates merely because it is the professional tier
Professional PlusUsers requiring the additional military and defence-oriented simulation capabilities supplied with PlusNormally unnecessary for civilian home simulation or routine professional aviation training

Our detailed breakdown of Academic and Professional eligibility, watermark and features covers the two categories most often confused. For the newer generation, our summary of Prepar3D v6 licence categories and launch pricing shows how Personal fits alongside Academic, Professional and Professional Plus.

Professional is not a graphics upgrade. Routine aircraft and scenery compatibility depends primarily on the Prepar3D major version, while performance depends on the software, settings and hardware. Professional Plus is the exception in the sense that it includes specialised capabilities, but those are not needed for an ordinary civilian simulator setup.

Can a home simmer use Personal or Academic?

For Prepar3D v6, a private home simmer would normally begin by considering the Personal licence. Academic should be chosen only when both the user and the intended use satisfy its educational terms.

Being a student does not automatically make every use academic, and using the simulator at home does not automatically make every use personal. A private hobby cockpit is different from charging customers for instruction, demonstrations or simulator time. Academic editions also use a visible Academic watermark, which matters for recorded footage and cockpit displays.

Does one licence include every P3D version and add-on?

No. A Prepar3D licence normally applies to the specific major release purchased, and future major releases should not be assumed to be included. Add-ons are licensed separately and may support only particular P3D generations, even when the base simulator licence is valid.

Activation is another separate issue. Moving an existing installation to replacement hardware may require releasing its activation first; our procedure for deactivating Prepar3D before a PC change explains the safe order.
