To install Saitek X52 drivers on 64-bit Windows, download the x64 package for your exact controller—X52 or X52 Professional—disconnect the HOTAS, run the installer as administrator and reconnect it only when prompted. Install the optional programming software afterwards, then verify every axis and button through Windows Game Controllers.
For general flight-simulator use, Windows may recognise the X52 as a basic USB controller without the full package. The manufacturer’s driver and programming software are still preferable when you need profiles, mode-based commands, macros or the complete control-panel options.
Which X52 driver package do I need?
Choose the package that matches both the controller model and your 64-bit version of Windows. X52 and X52 Professional are separate products; do not select the Professional package merely because it appears newer.
- Controller model: Check the model name printed on the throttle or its label.
- System type: Open Windows Settings, select System and then About, and confirm that System type says 64-bit operating system.
- Package architecture: Select x64 or 64-bit, not x86 or 32-bit.
- Software type: The device driver is required for full recognition. The profile or programming application is optional unless you use macros, modes or keyboard assignments.
A mistake we see constantly is mixing an old Saitek programming package with a newer Logitech driver, or installing the X52 Professional package for a standard X52. Use one matching software generation wherever possible.
How do I install the X52 driver and software?
- Remove conflicting installations. If an earlier attempt failed, uninstall existing Saitek or Logitech X52 driver and programming entries from Windows Installed apps, then restart the computer. Back up any custom profiles first.
- Disconnect the USB cable. Unplug the throttle’s USB connector from the PC. The joystick should remain connected to the throttle through its round interconnect cable; check that both ends are fully seated.
- Start the x64 installer. Right-click the driver package, choose Run as administrator and accept the Windows security prompt.
- Wait for the connection prompt. Do not reconnect the X52 early. When requested, plug it directly into a PC USB port rather than an unpowered hub.
- Finish the driver installation. Allow Windows time to configure the USB devices. Restart if the installer requests it.
- Install the programming application. If supplied separately, install it after the driver. Skip it when you only need ordinary axis and button assignments inside the simulator.
- Test the controller. Press the Windows and R keys, enter
joy.cpl, select the X52 and open Properties. Move the stick, twist grip, throttle, rotaries, hats and slider, then press every button.

Why is the Saitek X52 not detected after installation?
An undetected X52 is usually caused by the wrong package, connecting it before the installer requests it, a stale driver, a loose stick-to-throttle cable or an unsuitable USB connection.
- No device appears in
joy.cpl: Try a direct USB port, preferably without an extension cable or hub. Disconnect other non-essential controllers while reinstalling. - Windows shows an unknown device: Uninstall that device in Device Manager, disconnect the X52, restart and repeat the driver installation.
- The installer waits indefinitely: Cancel it, unplug the controller and remove the incomplete package before trying again. Confirm that the installer is the x64 edition for the exact X52 model.
- The throttle lights up but the stick does not respond: Disconnect USB power and reseat the round interconnect cable at both ends. Inspect it for bent pins or a loose socket.
- Only some axes work: Test outside the simulator with
joy.cpl. If the same axis fails there, simulator bindings are not the cause. - An old driver is blocked: Replace it with the appropriate 64-bit package rather than permanently disabling Windows driver-signature protection.

Do I need Saitek X52 programming software?
The programming software is not required when the simulator can bind every X52 axis and button directly. Install it only when you need keyboard emulation, macros, multiple command modes or reusable profiles.
Avoid assigning the same control in both the programming software and the simulator. That can produce doubled commands, stuck switches or buttons that appear to perform two actions. Keep analogue flight axes assigned inside the simulator unless a specific profile requires otherwise.
