This is general PC flight-simulator guidance, not a procedure limited to MSFS, FSX, X-Plane or Prepar3D. Windows may recognise the X52 as a basic USB controller without extra software, but the official package adds the matching driver, control-panel functions and, where supplied, profile programming.

Which Saitek X52 driver package do I need?

Choose the package by controller model, Windows architecture and processor type—not by the age or branding of the HOTAS.

Check the exact product name on the throttle base or its underside label. X52 and X52 Professional are different devices; the Pro package is not an upgrade for the standard model.

Open Windows Settings, go to System and then About, and read System type. Most readers need the x64 package shown by 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor. Driver architecture follows Windows, not the simulator: a 32-bit simulator such as FSX still uses an x64 controller driver when running on 64-bit Windows.

Older units may say Saitek while official support and package descriptions use Logitech. For a Saitek-badged unit, the official Logitech X52 64-bit driver is normally correct when the product model matches. Obtain it through the manufacturer’s support service rather than a third-party driver downloader, and do not mix a legacy Saitek programming suite with an unrelated Logitech driver package.

For Windows 11 64-bit, select the official Windows 11 option when one is offered for the product. If an older package is blocked as unsigned or incompatible, do not force the x86 edition or permanently disable Windows security features. Windows can often provide basic USB HID operation while you resolve the optional software package.

How do I install X52 drivers on Windows 11 or Windows 10 64-bit?

Install the official x64 package with the throttle disconnected, attaching the HOTAS only when the installer requests it.

  1. Back up existing profiles. Do this before removing an older programming suite, because uninstalling it may remove locally stored profile data.
  2. Remove conflicting X52 software if necessary. For a first installation, this is usually unnecessary. If a previous attempt failed, uninstall only entries specifically associated with the X52, Saitek or Logitech controller software, restart Windows and leave the HOTAS unplugged.
  3. Check the physical connection. The joystick connects to the throttle through the round interconnect cable, while the throttle provides the USB connection to the PC.   4. Download the matching package. Select standard X52 or X52 Professional, then choose x64 or 64-bit. Some packages combine the driver and programming application; others present them separately.
  5. Run the driver installer. Use Run as administrator if Windows offers it, approve the security prompt and keep the throttle USB cable disconnected until instructed otherwise.
  6. Connect the X52 when prompted. Start with a direct PC USB port rather than an extension lead or unpowered hub. Give Windows time to configure each part of the controller before closing the installer.
  7. Install optional programming software afterwards. If it is a separate download, use the build intended for the same X52 model and software family. Skip it when you plan to assign every control directly inside the simulator.
  8. Restart and test the HOTAS. Press Windows and R, enter joy.cpl, select the X52 and open Properties. Test the stick axes, twist rudder, throttle, rotaries, slider, hats and buttons.

Why is the Saitek X52 not detected after installation?

If the X52 is absent from joy.cpl, the usual causes are a model mismatch, stale driver, premature USB connection, loose interconnect cable or unreliable USB port.

  • No controller appears: Disconnect the HOTAS, restart Windows and try another direct USB port. On a desktop, a rear motherboard port is a useful test. Remove unpowered hubs and extension cables from the connection path.
  • The installer keeps waiting: Confirm that you downloaded the package for the exact X52 model and x64 Windows. Cancel an incomplete installation, unplug the throttle, remove the partial X52 package and restart before trying again.
  • The throttle lights up but the stick is dead: Illumination proves that power is present, not that the data connection is sound. Unplug USB power and reseat the round stick-to-throttle cable at both ends; inspect the connector for bent pins or looseness.
  • Windows reports an unknown device or device error: In Device Manager, remove only the entry associated with the failed X52 connection and, if Windows offers the option, remove its driver. Do not delete unrelated generic HID devices. Reboot and repeat the installation with the controller disconnected.
  • Windows 11 blocks an old driver: Uninstall the legacy Saitek or Logitech suite and replace it with an officially signed x64 package. Compatibility mode may help an old installer launch, but it cannot make an incompatible kernel driver safe.   • The X52 works in Windows but not in the simulator: The driver is no longer the main suspect. Select the correct controller in the simulator, remove duplicate assignments and check that a loaded profile is not converting the same button into a keyboard command. MSFS users can follow the MSFS-specific X52 installation and calibration sequence.
  • Only one axis fails: Test it in joy.cpl. An axis that fails there cannot be repaired through simulator sensitivity or binding settings; investigate calibration, cabling, USB stability or the control’s sensor.

Do I need Saitek X52 software as well as the driver?

No—programming software is optional when the simulator can bind all required X52 axes and buttons directly.

Install the software when you need keyboard emulation, macros, mode-dependent command layers or reusable profiles across different simulators. For an X52 Pro, use the matching X52 Pro software 64-bit package rather than the standard X52 application. If the driver and programming application are separate, keep them from the same official package family wherever possible.

Native simulator assignments are usually the cleaner choice for analogue controls such as pitch, roll, rudder and throttle. Mapping the same action in both the profile software and simulator can cause doubled commands, stuck inputs or a switch that performs two unrelated functions.

Two X52 behaviours are often mistaken for driver faults. The MODE selector primarily changes programming layers and may not appear as three ordinary simulator buttons. The throttle’s clutch or i button can also be reserved by clutch mode; disable that feature in the X52 properties if you want the simulator to receive the button directly.
