Does the ST290 Pro need a separate Windows 11 driver?
Usually, no: Windows 11's built-in HID driver should expose the ST290 Pro as a game controller without the original Saitek CD or programming software. The displayed name may be Saitek ST290 Pro, an HID-compliant game controller or a generic USB joystick.
The old Saitek software mainly added profiling and keyboard-mapping functions; it was not required for ordinary axes and buttons. Modern simulators provide their own control assignments, sensitivity settings and profiles, making direct simulator configuration the safer choice. Do not install an unrelated X52, yoke or Logitech Pro Flight package in the hope that it supports the ST290 Pro. Avoid generic driver-updater utilities as well.
How do I install the Saitek ST290 Pro on Windows 11?
Start with Windows' automatic driver and confirm that the controller works outside the simulator before changing any in-game settings.
- Remove failed legacy software if necessary. If you previously installed an old Saitek driver or profiler and the stick stopped appearing, uninstall that package first. Follow our clean removal procedure for conflicting Saitek software rather than deleting driver files manually.
- Restart with the joystick disconnected. This clears any installer process or stale device session left in memory.
- Connect the ST290 Pro directly. Use a USB port on the PC rather than a hub, extension lead or monitor port during initial setup. Windows should install the HID game-controller driver automatically.
- Open the Windows controller panel. Press
Windows+R, enterjoy.cpland press Enter. Select the joystick and open Properties. - Test every input. Move the stick left and right, forwards and backwards, twist it, operate the throttle and press each button. The indicators on the Test page should respond.
- Calibrate only when needed. If the axes do not reach their full range or return properly to centre, use the calibration option on the Settings page. Move each axis through its complete travel when prompted.
Only consider a legacy Saitek installer if the built-in HID setup fails and you have a trusted package explicitly intended for the ST290 Pro and 64-bit Windows. Windows 11 cannot load a 32-bit kernel driver, and compatibility mode does not turn one into a signed 64-bit driver. Disabling driver-signature enforcement is not a sensible permanent fix for this joystick.
How do I map the ST290 Pro in a flight simulator?
Create a custom controller profile if the simulator has no ST290 Pro preset, then assign each physical axis to the matching flight-control axis.

Clear duplicate assignments placed on another joystick, gamepad or virtual controller. If rudder or throttle movement is backwards, enable that simulator's reverse or invert option for the affected axis. Begin with a linear response and add only enough dead zone to stop unwanted movement around the centre.
Why is the ST290 Pro detected but not working correctly?
