How do I install or update Thrustmaster drivers and firmware?

Adam McEnroe
In short

Install or update Thrustmaster drivers and firmware safely on a Windows PC, verify the controller, and fix common updater detection failures.

To install or update Thrustmaster drivers and firmware on a Windows PC, download the package for your exact controller model, close flight-simulation and mapping software, install the driver as administrator, then run the included firmware updater. Keep the device connected exactly as prompted and never disconnect it while firmware is being written.

Which Thrustmaster driver package do I need?

Use only the official package listed for the exact product name and hardware variant printed on the controller's label. Similar-looking products such as the T.Flight Hotas X, Hotas 4 and Hotas One do not necessarily share drivers or firmware.

ComponentWhat it doesInstallation rule
Driver and control panelLets Windows identify the controller and expose its axes, buttons and settings.Install the package approved for the model and supported Windows edition.
Firmware updaterWrites control code into the device itself.Use only the utility and firmware supplied for that exact model.
TARGET softwareCreates advanced mappings and virtual controllers for supported products.Optional for normal detection; close it during driver and firmware maintenance.

Some Thrustmaster controllers work as standard USB HID devices and have no separate driver or user-installable firmware. If the manufacturer's support entry offers nothing for your exact model, do not substitute a package from a related controller.

How do I install Thrustmaster drivers on Windows?

Install the driver before attempting a firmware update, following the connection sequence shown by the installer. Updating over an existing package is usually sufficient; remove the old version only when its instructions or installer specifically require it.

  1. Prepare the PC. Close the flight simulator, TARGET, Windows controller panels and any other software reading the device. Connect a laptop to mains power and prevent it from sleeping during the process.
  2. Check the package. Confirm that its product name matches the label beneath or behind the controller. Extract the download first if it is supplied as a compressed archive.
  3. Disconnect when instructed. Many packages expect the controller to be unplugged at the start, but the model's supplied instructions take precedence.
  4. Run the installer as administrator. Accept the driver installation and connect the controller only when prompted.
  5. Use a direct USB connection. Avoid unpowered hubs, docks, extension leads and adapters. If the controller has a platform selector, place it in the model's documented PC-compatible position before connecting it.
  6. Restart Windows. Reboot after installation even if the device appears immediately, especially when replacing an older driver package.

How do I update Thrustmaster firmware safely?

Run the firmware utility installed with, or supplied alongside, the correct driver package while the controller is connected directly to the PC. Firmware and driver version numbers are separate and are not expected to match.

  1. Open the official firmware updater. Its location varies by product and package, so use the utility installed for that controller rather than an updater retained from another model.
  2. Confirm the detected product. Check the displayed device name and installed firmware version before proceeding. If the offered version is identical or older, do not force an update or downgrade.
  3. Start the update. Do not move a platform switch, unplug the USB cable, shut down Windows or allow the PC to sleep. A temporary USB disconnection and reconnection can be part of the flashing process.
  4. Wait for explicit confirmation. Do not assume the process has finished because a progress window pauses or the controller's lights change.
  5. Update separate units individually. A stick, throttle or other independently connected unit may appear as a separate firmware target. Update only the devices listed by the correct utility.

A working controller does not need firmware flashed merely because a flight simulator received an update. Install firmware when the official release information addresses compatibility, reliability or a fault relevant to the device.

Verify Windows before opening the simulator

Press Windows key + R, enter joy.cpl, select the Thrustmaster controller and open its properties. Check every axis, hat and button; our Windows joystick detection and axis test explains what normal input should look like.

Do not use the Windows calibration wizard unless the model's documentation tells you to. Many modern Thrustmaster units self-calibrate, while the simulator keeps its own sensitivity, dead-zone and response settings.

If the device works in joy.cpl but not in the simulator, the driver is no longer the likely problem. Continue with creating and checking an MSFS 2020 or 2024 joystick profile, or use the corresponding X-Plane 12 axis assignment and calibration steps.

Why does the firmware updater not detect my controller?

An undetected controller usually points to the wrong package, an unsuitable USB connection, an incorrect platform mode or a driver that did not finish installing.

SymptomWhat to do
Windows and the updater both show no deviceRestart the PC, check the platform selector, and reconnect directly to another motherboard USB port. Then reinstall the exact model's driver package.
The controller works in joy.cpl, but the updater cannot see itCheck that the firmware utility belongs to the same model and came from the same supported package. A generic Windows HID driver can provide basic input without satisfying a model-specific updater.
The update reports failure or the controller disappearsWait until the utility has stopped before touching the cable. Use only the manufacturer's model-specific bootloader or recovery procedure; recovery button combinations differ between products.
Controls move twice after the updateCheck whether TARGET has created a virtual controller while the physical device is also bound. Close the TARGET profile or remove duplicate simulator assignments.
An old package will not reinstallRemove only the named Thrustmaster package from Windows' installed-apps list, restart, and install the correct package again. Do not delete unrelated HID devices or drivers.

After maintenance, a simulator may treat the controller as a new device or create a fresh default profile. Recheck pitch, roll, yaw and throttle assignments before flight, paying particular attention to duplicate axes and reversed throttles.
