Native MSFS helicopters should use the dedicated cyclic and tail-rotor commands. Some add-on aircraft may respond only to the conventional aileron, elevator and rudder axes; use those alternatives only when the dedicated commands produce no movement. Do not leave both sets assigned without confirming that the aircraft requires them.

How do I create the X52 helicopter profile?

  1. Check the hardware first. Secure the cable between the X52 stick and throttle, connect the USB plug directly to the PC where possible, and confirm in Windows that every axis reaches its full range. If MSFS does not recognise the device, work through our joystick detection and calibration checks before changing simulator bindings.

  3. Remove conflicting assignments. Check every axis under the assigned-controls filter. The throttle lever must not operate both Collective Axis and Throttle Axis, and the stick must not command both cyclic and fixed-wing axes unless a particular aircraft needs that compatibility arrangement.
  4. Assign each axis by moving it. Use input scanning where available, then move only the intended X52 control. Confirm that the input indicator travels smoothly from one end to the other.
  5. Check direction in the cockpit. Pulling the stick should command aft cyclic, moving it right should command right cyclic, and the selected throttle-lever direction should raise the collective. Invert only the individual axis that moves backwards.
  6. Save before testing another aircraft. Confirm that MSFS still shows the helicopter preset after returning to the aircraft. Automatic profile switching or an unsaved edit can silently restore the default aeroplane assignments.

The X52 is a PC USB controller. Its MSFS 2024 profile cannot be transferred for use as a native controller on Xbox Series X|S or PlayStation 5.

What X52 sensitivity settings work for hovering?

Start close to linear, then soften the cyclic around its centre only as much as needed for controlled hovering. Large dead zones hide small corrections and make the helicopter lurch when the input finally leaves the dead area.

These are starting ranges, not universal presets. X52 twist axes can develop more noise than the main stick axes, especially on older units. Watch the input indicator with your hands off the controls and add only enough dead zone to stop visible movement.

Leave reactivity at its normal full-response setting initially. Reducing it can add lag, which encourages overcorrection during a hover. The X52's centring spring is already unlike a force-trim helicopter cyclic, so avoid masking that difference with an extreme response curve.

Do I need to map helicopter throttle as well as collective?

Most governed helicopters need only the collective during normal flight, so the main X52 throttle lever should be assigned to Collective Axis. Collective changes blade pitch and lift; helicopter throttle controls engine power or rotor RPM and is a different function.

If an aircraft models a manual twist-grip throttle, assign Helicopter Throttle Axis to an X52 rotary control or another spare axis. Never assign collective and helicopter throttle to the same lever: raising collective would then alter two controls at once, making rotor RPM and lift difficult to manage.

Why are the X52 helicopter controls reversed or fighting me?

Reversed movement usually needs a single-axis inversion, while controls that fight the pilot usually indicate duplicate bindings, hardware noise or active assistance.

  • Collective moves down when the lever advances: invert Collective Axis and verify the animated cockpit lever. Choose whichever physical direction feels natural, but ensure the full lever range produces the full collective range.
  • The helicopter rolls or pitches without input: check for another joystick, gamepad or duplicate cyclic assignment. If the preset has become cluttered, use our procedure for clearing conflicting controller bindings and rebuild only the four essential axes.
  • The aircraft yaws continuously: inspect the twist-axis indicator for jitter, confirm full tail-rotor travel and check that an Xbox controller is not contributing rudder input. More pedal as collective rises can be normal torque compensation rather than a binding fault.
  • Full lever movement produces no lift: the lever is probably bound to engine throttle instead of Collective Axis, or the rotor has not reached its governed operating RPM.
  • Inputs feel inconsistent: helicopter cyclic or anti-torque assistance may be countering the X52. Disable those assists for direct control, or leave them enabled while learning and accept that they will modify your commands.
  • One helicopter behaves differently: check its own control documentation and cockpit animations. Rotor direction, governor operation, force trim and add-on control implementations can differ between aircraft.
