How do I save views across multiple monitors in FSX?

Learn how to save FSX multi-monitor views, restore them with a saved flight, and fix windows that reopen on the wrong screen.

In FSX and FSX: Steam Edition, arrange each camera in an undocked view window, move the windows to the required monitors, then save the flight. The layout is stored with that saved flight, not as a universal monitor profile, so load that flight—or make it the default—to restore the views.

Both FSX editions use this saved-flight method. The saved .FLT data records the open windows, selected cameras, zoom settings and desktop coordinates, which is why merely closing FSX does not preserve a new arrangement everywhere.

How do I save an FSX multi-monitor view layout?

Save the layout only after every view is undocked, positioned and framed exactly as required.

  1. Extend the Windows desktop. Select the Windows option that extends rather than duplicates the displays. Keep the monitor arrangement in Display Settings consistent with their physical positions; our FSX dual-screen configuration walkthrough covers the underlying display setup.
  2. Run FSX in windowed mode. Undocked views are easier to create, move and recover there than in the simulator's older full-screen mode.
  3. Open the additional views. Use the Views menu or the right-click view menu to create a new cockpit, outside or aircraft view. Our guide to FSX camera categories and view cycling explains which camera type to choose.
  4. Undock each new window. Right-click inside it, select Undock Window, then drag it to the intended display. Resize it before adjusting the final zoom and viewing angle.
  5. Arrange every view. Select the required camera, orientation and zoom in each window. If a view or window shortcut is unfamiliar, consult our reference for FSX window and view commands.
  6. Save the flight. Use FSX's Save Flight command after the complete layout is in place. Give it a recognisable name such as a cockpit and monitor template. Select the default-flight option only if this should be the layout FSX opens with.
  7. Test the saved layout. Close and reopen FSX, then load that exact saved flight. Confirm that all windows return to the correct displays before spending time refining their alignment.

Why do saved FSX views reopen on the wrong monitor?

FSX saves desktop coordinates rather than a durable identity for each physical monitor. A changed resolution, primary display, scaling setting or monitor position can therefore send a window to another screen or leave it outside the visible desktop.

  • The wrong flight was loaded: selecting the same aircraft in Free Flight is not equivalent to loading the saved flight containing the layout.
  • The display arrangement changed: restore the original Windows monitor order and resolutions, reposition the views, then save the flight again.
  • A monitor was disconnected: reconnect it before loading the flight. FSX may otherwise place an undocked window beyond the remaining desktop area.
  • The flight was saved too early: recreate or move the windows, then overwrite the saved flight only after the final arrangement is complete.
  • Full-screen mode interferes: return to windowed mode, recover and position the windows, and resave. Test full-screen operation afterwards if it is required.

A mistake we see constantly is arranging the views, exiting, and expecting FSX to treat that arrangement as a global preference. It will not: the saved flight is the layout container.

Can one saved layout work with every aircraft?

One layout is most reliable when treated as a template for a particular aircraft and panel. A saved flight also contains the aircraft, location and other flight state, while add-on aircraft can define their own cameras and panel windows.

Create separate named templates for aircraft that need different cockpit, wing or instrument views. Loading a template and then changing aircraft may preserve some windows, but unavailable camera definitions can revert to another view or produce inconsistent framing.

Can FSX save a three-monitor panoramic cockpit?

FSX can restore three separately positioned view windows, but it does not provide modern projection-corrected multi-monitor rendering. Separate left, centre and right cameras can approximate a panorama, though bezel alignment, perspective and zoom require manual adjustment.

Use separate windows when each monitor needs a different camera or instrument panel. A single stretched front view avoids mismatched camera angles but usually creates stronger distortion towards the outer edges.

How much performance do extra view windows cost?

Every additional 3D view makes FSX render another scene, so the frame-rate cost can be substantial. The second monitor itself is not the main problem; repeatedly rendering scenery, weather, traffic and shadows from different camera angles is.

Keep secondary 3D windows no larger than necessary and avoid opening unused outside views. If performance drops, reduce the number of rendered cameras first; lowering scenery complexity, traffic or demanding weather settings can then recover more headroom. Undocked instrument panels are usually less costly than another full exterior scene, although complex add-on gauges still consume processing time.
