Set up multiple monitors in FSX and Steam Edition with stable undocked views, then fix black screens, stutter, crashes and memory errors.
Set Windows to Extend these displays, run FSX or FSX: Steam Edition in windowed mode, create and undock only the views you need, then drag each to its monitor. Add displays one at a time and reduce scenery or traffic before adding more rendered views; this avoids most crashes, black windows and severe stutter.
A stable FSX multiple-monitor setup
The safest arrangement uses ordinary Windows extended-desktop mode and separate FSX windows. Build the layout gradually rather than opening several full-resolution views at once.
- Extend the Windows desktop. In Windows display settings, select Extend these displays, arrange the screen icons to match their physical positions and choose the central or main flying screen as the primary display. Power on and connect every monitor before starting FSX.
- Use one graphics adapter where possible. Connect the displays to the same dedicated GPU. Mixed integrated and dedicated graphics, USB display adapters and docking-station video outputs introduce extra drivers that can cause black or slow scenery windows. A USB adapter may cope with a simple 2D panel, but it is a poor choice for a rendered outside view.
- Set native resolution and sensible scaling. Each monitor should normally use its native resolution. Matching Windows scaling percentages reduces misplaced or incorrectly sized panels. Mixed refresh rates are supported, although motion may look uneven between screens.
- Start FSX in windowed mode. Keep the main simulator window on the primary monitor while creating the layout. Full-screen mode is more prone to focus changes and black secondary windows; our safe windowed and full-screen switching steps explain how to change modes without losing the display.
- Create and undock a view. Use
Views > New Viewfor another camera, or open a pop-up panel from the Instrument Panel menu. Right-click inside the new window, selectUndock Window, then drag it to the required monitor. - Add one window at a time. Begin with a modest window size, confirm that FSX remains stable, and only then enlarge it or create another. Test with the aircraft, weather and detailed scenery you normally use rather than judging the layout over an empty area.
Which FSX monitor layout is most stable?
A main 3D cockpit view with 2D instruments on the secondary displays is usually the lightest and most reliable arrangement.

Each independent 3D window makes FSX render another camera; the extra monitors do not simply divide an existing image. Surround and Eyefinity spanning modes
Nvidia Surround or AMD Eyefinity is not required. Use a spanning mode when you want Windows and FSX to treat several monitors as one very wide display; use extended desktop when you want independently positioned panels and camera views.
A spanned view avoids several undocked 3D windows, but it still renders a large number of pixels and can stretch the image at the sides. For a single wide viewport, WideViewAspect=True under the [Display] section of fsx.cfg usually gives a more suitable field of view. Back up the file before editing it, and do not combine spanning and multiple undocked views until each method works by itself.
How do I prevent stutter and crashes?
Leave enough processing headroom for every additional view, because FSX is often limited by its main processing thread before the graphics card reaches full utilisation.
- Set a sustainable frame-rate target. Choose a rate FSX can hold at your busiest airports and in heavy weather. A lower stable target is preferable to rapid swings between high and low frame rates.
- Reduce expensive settings first. AI traffic, road traffic, autogen, detailed water and dense cloud layers are common pressure points. Our guide to settings that recover FSX frame time covers these trade-offs without relying on questionable configuration tweaks.
- Control the rendered area. Keep instrument windows compact and avoid maximising every outside view. Reducing an FSX window's size is usually better than running a monitor at a blurry non-native resolution.
- Test with default content. If the default aircraft and scenery remain stable but an add-on cockpit does not, the panel or gauge is the likely cause rather than the monitor arrangement.
- Watch memory use. Both FSX editions are 32-bit applications with finite address space. Complex aircraft, high-resolution scenery and several rendered windows can end in an out-of-memory crash even on a PC with ample installed RAM. Why do FSX views turn black or disappear?
Black or missing windows usually result from full-screen switching, changed display numbering, graphics-driver conflicts or a view reopening outside the active desktop.
- Black after changing display mode: return to windowed mode, close and recreate the affected view, then restart FSX if the renderer does not recover.
- Window opens off-screen: restore the Windows monitor arrangement used when the flight was saved. With the missing window active, the Windows shortcut
Win+Shift+LeftorWin+Shift+Rightcan move it between displays. - Only an add-on panel is black: test the same monitor with a default FSX panel. Some add-on gauges do not draw correctly when undocked.
- Secondary scenery view is black or flickering: test with DirectX 10 Preview disabled, restart FSX and remove overlays or mixed-adapter outputs from the test. Change one item at a time so the actual cause remains clear.
- FSX crashes when a view is enlarged: reduce the window size or number of cameras. If that works, pixel load or memory pressure is the issue, not the physical monitor.
Does FSX remember monitor positions?
FSX saved flights can retain many panel and view positions, but restoration is not reliable after monitor numbering, resolution, scaling or primary-display changes. Arrange the windows, save the flight once the layout is stable, and start future sessions with every display connected and using the same Windows arrangement.
Some add-on panels manage their own coordinates and may need repositioning after a restart. Treat the saved layout as a convenience rather than assuming it will survive a graphics-driver update or a changed desktop configuration.
