VFR scenery in Microsoft Flight Simulator is scenery designed to make visual navigation under Visual Flight Rules more convincing. It improves recognisable ground references—towns, towers, bridges, masts, coastlines, roads and terrain—so pilots can follow a route by looking outside rather than relying solely on instruments or GPS.

What does VFR scenery actually add?

The term describes a purpose, not a fixed type of add-on. A product labelled “VFR scenery” might add thousands of regional objects, replace generic buildings or correct specific features that visual pilots use as checkpoints.

  • Landmarks and points of interest: churches, castles, stadiums, bridges, cooling towers and distinctive buildings.
  • Aviation obstacles: radio masts, wind turbines, chimneys, pylons and similar tall structures.
  • Regional buildings: locally appropriate houses, industrial sites, farms and city structures in place of generic procedural models.
  • Geographical corrections: improved coastlines, water features, roads, terrain or ground imagery.
  • Airport surroundings: recognisable objects and approach references outside the airport boundary.

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024 already provide a VFR-capable world using aerial imagery, elevation data, procedural buildings, selected photogrammetry and handcrafted points of interest. Is VFR scenery the same as photogrammetry?

No. Photogrammetry is one technique for reconstructing three-dimensional cities or terrain from imagery, while VFR scenery is any scenery intended to improve visual recognition and navigation.

A single package can combine several of these types. Read its coverage description carefully: some “VFR” products add only landmarks and leave the underlying terrain and aerial imagery untouched.

Do you need a VFR scenery add-on?

You do not need one for every flight because the default world is often sufficient for visual navigation. An add-on is most useful when flying repeatedly in a familiar region, following published visual reporting points or sightseeing at low altitude.

Choose a VFR pack when important landmarks are absent, generic buildings make towns difficult to distinguish, or the route depends on objects such as masts and cooling towers. It offers less value for high-altitude airline flying, and it may duplicate landmarks already supplied by a World Update or another regional package.

A landmark pack will not repair soft or missing ground textures. If the whole surface looks indistinct, work through the relevant streaming, terrain-detail and cache checks for blurry scenery before installing more objects.

How do you use VFR scenery for visual navigation?

Use VFR scenery by planning a route around features that should be easy to identify from your intended altitude, then confirming each feature visually while cross-checking heading and elapsed time.

  1. Plan with suitable charts. Mark prominent towns, coastlines, road junctions, lakes and terrain features. Our guide explains how to obtain and use charts in Microsoft Flight Simulator.
  2. Check the scenery coverage. Confirm that the package includes the whole route, not just the departure airport or one city.
  3. Set usable conditions. Daylight, cloud base and visibility must allow the selected checkpoints to be seen; scenery cannot compensate for poor visual conditions.
  4. Fly by pilotage and dead reckoning. Identify each checkpoint outside, while monitoring heading, groundspeed and elapsed time. GPS can provide a cross-check without becoming the sole means of navigation.
  5. Use several references. A town beside a river bend is safer to identify than one isolated mast that may be missing, duplicated or misplaced.

Is VFR scenery accurate enough for training?

It is useful for practising pilotage, route familiarisation and cockpit workload, but it is not an authoritative aeronautical source. Objects may be outdated or positioned imperfectly, and the “VFR” label does not mean that the simulator enforces real airspace rules, weather minima or altitude restrictions. Never use simulator scenery for real-world navigation.

What should you check before installing VFR scenery?

Check compatibility, coverage and overlap before adding a package. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024 do not automatically accept every package made for the other version.

  • Simulator version: use a package explicitly supported by your edition of Microsoft Flight Simulator.
  • Platform: manually downloaded Community folder packages are for PC; console users are limited to content delivered through the simulator’s supported in-sim system.
  • Dependencies: some packages require a particular World Update, library or optional scenery component.
  • Overlapping coverage: two packs editing the same landmark can create doubled buildings, flashing surfaces or missing objects.
  • Performance: dense object packs can increase main-thread and graphics load, while photogrammetry also depends heavily on world-data streaming.

A mistake we see constantly is stacking several city, landmark and airport packages over the same area without checking what each one changes.
