VFR scenery explained: what it adds to Microsoft Flight Simulator, how it differs from photogrammetry, and when MSFS 2020 or 2024 needs it.
VFR scenery in Microsoft Flight Simulator improves the visible ground features pilots use for navigation under Visual Flight Rules. It adds or corrects landmarks, towns, masts, bridges, coastlines, roads and terrain, helping you recognise a route from the cockpit instead of depending entirely on GPS or instrument guidance.
What does VFR mean in Microsoft Flight Simulator?
VFR means Visual Flight Rules, the operating rules under which pilots fly with sufficient visual reference to the ground and surrounding traffic. In practical simulator flying, it usually means navigating through pilotage, dead reckoning and visual checkpoints, with instruments or GPS available as supporting tools.
VFR is not a graphics setting or scenery technology. Real-world visibility, cloud clearance and airspace requirements vary by jurisdiction, while Microsoft Flight Simulator lets you select weather and assistance options that may not represent legal VFR conditions. What does VFR scenery actually add?
VFR scenery is a purpose rather than one fixed type of add-on. A package may add a few important structures, populate an entire region with obstacles, replace generic buildings or correct terrain and surface details used as visual checkpoints.
- Landmarks and points of interest: castles, churches, stadiums, bridges, monuments and distinctive buildings.
- Aviation obstacles: radio masts, wind turbines, chimneys, cooling towers, cranes and pylons.
- Regional buildings: locally recognisable housing, farms, industrial sites and city structures in place of generic procedural models.
- Geographical detail: corrected coastlines, rivers, lakes, roads, terrain elevations or ground imagery.
- Airport surroundings: approach references, circuit landmarks and visual reporting points outside the airport boundary.
What is a landmark in flight simulation?
A landmark is a distinctive, fixed feature that can be recognised from the air and used to confirm position. It can be human-made, such as a tower or motorway interchange, or natural, such as a headland, lake, ridge or river bend.
A point of interest is not automatically a useful navigation landmark. A small monument may look impressive close up but be invisible from circuit height, while a large reservoir or cooling tower can identify a route from many miles away. The best checkpoints are prominent, unique and supported by a second feature nearby.
Is the default MSFS world already VFR scenery?
The standard Microsoft Flight Simulator world is already capable of VFR flying, provided the relevant world-data features are available and enabled. MSFS 2020 and MSFS 2024 combine aerial imagery, terrain elevation, procedural buildings and vegetation, selected photogrammetry areas and hand-crafted points of interest.
Regional and World Update content can improve particular locations further. VFR add-ons normally fill gaps in that default world rather than replace it: a missing mast might be added, a generic town made more recognisable or a poor coastline corrected.
The phrase VFR world is not a standard MSFS file format or a guarantee of complete global coverage. Simmers often use it loosely to describe a world detailed enough for visual flight, and it may also appear in individual package names. Always check the stated region and feature list rather than assuming a product changes the whole planet.
Is VFR scenery the same as photogrammetry?
No. Photogrammetry is one method of reconstructing three-dimensional places from imagery, while VFR scenery is any scenery intended to improve visual recognition and navigation.

A package can combine several categories, but the word “VFR” alone does not reveal which ones. If fields and roads look soft or inaccurate, adding landmark objects will not repair the underlying image; our assessment of when photoreal ground scenery helps VFR navigation covers that separate choice.
VFR World, We Love VFR and EasyVFR are different terms
We Love VFR is the name of a community-made series of regional Microsoft Flight Simulator object packs, not a generic name for all VFR scenery. Its focus is on visible structures and obstacles such as masts, chimneys and cooling towers; it should not be assumed to replace aerial imagery, terrain or every building in its coverage area.
EasyVFR is separate flight-planning and moving-map software. It can support route planning and positional awareness, but it does not add models, improve textures or alter the simulator’s rendered world.
Likewise, “MS scenery” is broad shorthand for scenery made for a Microsoft flight simulator. It says nothing by itself about coverage, accuracy, compatibility or whether the package contains landmarks, airports, mesh or photo imagery.
Do you need a VFR scenery add-on in MSFS 2020 or 2024?
You need extra VFR scenery only when the standard world does not represent the visual references required for the kind of flying you intend to do. Both MSFS 2020 and 2024 can support ordinary visual navigation without add-ons.
Choose a regional or landmark pack when:
- you repeatedly fly over a familiar area and important structures are absent;
- a route uses published visual reporting points that are difficult to identify in the default scenery;
- generic buildings make neighbouring towns look too similar;
- you fly low-level sightseeing, helicopter, glider or general-aviation routes where regional identity matters;
- approach or circuit references outside an airport are missing.
It offers less benefit during high-altitude airline operations or when the real problem is blurred streaming imagery, poor terrain detail or a detailed airport. It can also reduce performance if a dense object pack is combined with high object-detail settings and other scenery covering the same place.
A package made for MSFS 2020 is not automatically compatible with MSFS 2024, even if both simulators use similar package concepts. Use the version explicitly supported by its creator.
How do you use VFR scenery for visual navigation?
Use VFR scenery by planning a chain of prominent checkpoints, identifying them outside the cockpit and cross-checking each fix against heading, time and surrounding features.
- Plan from suitable charts. Select large, distinctive features along the route rather than relying on one small object.
- Confirm scenery coverage. Check that the package covers the whole route, not merely the departure airport or one nearby city.
- Set flyable conditions. Choose daylight, visibility and cloud bases that allow the intended references to be seen.
- Use pilotage and dead reckoning. Follow heading and elapsed time, then identify each checkpoint visually.
- Cross-check the identification. A town beside a river bend and railway is safer to identify than an isolated mast that might be missing or misplaced.

Simulator scenery is useful for practising cockpit workload, pilotage and route familiarisation, but it is not authoritative aeronautical data. Objects can be outdated, omitted or positioned imperfectly, and published reporting points may change. Never use simulator scenery as a source for real-world navigation.
Checks before installing VFR scenery
Compatibility, coverage and overlap matter more than the size of the download or the number of advertised objects.
- Simulator version: confirm explicit support for MSFS 2020, MSFS 2024 or both.
- Platform: manually downloaded
Community-folder packages are a PC installation method. Xbox users, and PlayStation 5 users of MSFS 2024, cannot copy arbitrary PC packages into the simulator and must use supported in-sim content channels. MSFS 2020 was not released on PlayStation. - Dependencies: check for required World Updates, object libraries or optional scenery components.
- Coverage: inspect the named region rather than assuming labels such as “world” or “VFR” mean global coverage.
- Overlap: compare the package with installed city, airport, landmark and World Update scenery for the same area.
- Performance: dense objects can increase main-thread and graphics load, while photogrammetry and aerial imagery also depend on world-data streaming.
Why is VFR scenery missing or duplicated?
Missing or doubled VFR objects usually indicate an installation, dependency, data-streaming or scenery-overlap problem rather than a faulty aircraft or flight plan.
- Check the expected content. Make sure the object or area is actually listed in the package coverage.
- Verify online world data. If large parts of the default scenery are also absent or generic, check the simulator’s online data and photogrammetry options before blaming the add-on.
- Inspect the PC package structure. The active package folder should expose files such as
manifest.jsonandlayout.jsonat its package root. An extra nested folder is a common reason that Community scenery is not detected. - Confirm dependencies and version support. Install required libraries or regional updates and remove packages intended only for another simulator version.
- Restart after package changes. Fully close and reopen the simulator after adding, removing or reorganising Community content.
