Connect the CH Products Flight Yoke before starting FSX or FSX: Steam Edition, confirm Windows detects and calibrates it, then assign pitch, roll and throttle levers under Settings > Controls. Remove duplicate axis bindings, centre the yoke before calibration, and test direction, sensitivity and null zones in a simple default aircraft.
Set up the CH Flight Yoke step by step
- Connect the yoke directly to the PC. Use a direct USB port while setting it up rather than an unpowered hub. Keep it connected to the same port, because changing ports can make FSX treat it as a different controller.
- Check it in Windows. Press the Windows key and R, enter
joy.cpl, select the CH yoke and open its properties. Move the yoke and all three levers through their full ranges. Every axis should move smoothly and return consistently. - Calibrate if necessary. If the controller properties provide a calibration option, follow it while moving each requested axis through its full travel. Let the yoke settle at its physical centre before completing the process. - Open FSX Controls. Start FSX, open Settings > Controls and make sure controllers are enabled. Select the CH Products Flight Yoke from the controller-type list rather than editing a joystick, pedals or another connected device.
- Remove incorrect automatic assignments. On the control-axes page, inspect every existing entry for the yoke. FSX often creates plausible but unwanted assignments, especially when several controllers are connected. Delete duplicates before adding the correct axes.
- Assign each axis. Select the required control, choose the assignment command and move only the intended yoke axis. Keep the other levers still so FSX does not capture the wrong input.
- Adjust calibration settings. Set pitch and roll sensitivity high enough to produce full control travel, then use the smallest null zone that stops centre drift. Test before making large changes.
- Assign buttons and the hat switch. Add trim, views, brakes, flaps or other functions you actually use. Confirm the changes and close FSX normally so its controller configuration is retained.
Which CH yoke axes should I assign in FSX?
The yoke should control ailerons and elevator, while its three quadrant levers normally control throttle, propeller pitch and mixture.

Use the global throttle, propeller and mixture axes for ordinary single-engine aircraft or when one lever should operate all engines together. Engine-specific assignments are useful only when your hardware layout provides separate controls for each engine.
A fixed-pitch aircraft will not respond to the propeller lever, and some aircraft do not simulate mixture control. Test all three levers in a default piston aircraft that supports those functions before assuming an assignment has failed.
Do not assign a throttle lever as rudder control. If the Windows controller test does not show a dedicated rudder axis, use auto-rudder, keyboard controls or separate pedals instead.
What sensitivity and null-zone settings work best?
Start with high sensitivity for the aileron and elevator axes and a very small null zone. In FSX, reducing sensitivity too far can prevent the virtual controls from reaching their full deflection even when the physical yoke is against its stop.
- Use a zero or small null zone when the centred axis is stable.
- Increase the null zone slightly if the aircraft rolls or pitches because the yoke does not settle exactly at centre.
- Lower sensitivity modestly only if the response remains too abrupt, then verify that full control travel is still available.
- Do not hide spikes with a large null zone. A null zone only masks movement near the centre; it cannot repair noise across the entire axis range.
If the Windows test screen shows jumping or erratic movement, try another direct USB port and recalibrate. When the same spikes appear outside FSX, the fault is in the USB connection, calibration or controller hardware rather than the simulator.
Which buttons should I map on the CH Flight Yoke?
Map the commands needed during busy phases of flight and leave rarely used functions on the keyboard or cockpit panel.
- Elevator trim up and down on a paired rocker switch
- View panning on the eight-way hat switch
- Wheel brakes if no toe brakes are available
- Flaps up and down

Why does the yoke drift, move backwards or fight another controller?
Most CH yoke problems in FSX come from reversed axes, duplicate assignments or calibration errors rather than a missing driver.

Inspect every connected controller in FSX. A joystick twist axis, gamepad stick or pedal set may have been assigned automatically to the same flight control. Delete the unwanted binding from that device rather than compensating with sensitivity settings.
If the Windows test shows the yoke centred but the aircraft still pitches, check elevator trim and autopilot state. An out-of-trim aircraft is not evidence of a drifting yoke axis.
Do I need CH Control Manager for FSX?
CH profile software is not required for a straightforward FSX yoke setup because the USB yoke can operate as a standard Windows game controller. Direct input is usually the simpler choice.
If an existing profile creates a mapped or virtual CH controller, assign either that virtual device or the physical yoke—not both. Seeing both in FSX can produce doubled inputs, unexpected button numbers and settings that appear to change when the profile mode changes.
How should I add CH rudder pedals?
