How do I use the mouse yoke in FSX?

In Microsoft Flight Simulator X, press Ctrl+Y during a flight to switch on Mouse Yoke. Move the pointer left or right for ailerons and up or down for elevator. Keep it near the screen centre for small inputs, use trim to remove steady pressure, and press Ctrl+Y again to switch it off.

How do I activate Mouse Yoke in FSX?

Mouse Yoke is activated inside an active flight, and FSX and FSX: Steam Edition use the same default Ctrl+Y command.

  1. Load a flight: Wait until the aircraft and cockpit are fully loaded.
  2. Disconnect the autopilot: An engaged autopilot may oppose your inputs or retrim the aircraft while you are trying to hand-fly.
  3. Press Ctrl+Y: The pointer changes to the Mouse Yoke crosshair. No mouse button needs to be held.
  4. Make small movements: The farther the crosshair moves from the centre, the greater the elevator or aileron deflection.
  5. Return it to neutral: Bring the crosshair back to the centre to neutralise the controls. Press Ctrl+Y again when you want the normal pointer back.

Neutral controls do not automatically make the wings level or hold altitude. The aircraft may continue turning, climbing or descending because of its attitude, trim and momentum. When you need to operate small cockpit switches or drag a panel lever, switch Mouse Yoke off first to avoid an unintended control input.

Why does the FSX mouse yoke feel twitchy?

The mouse yoke feels twitchy when the pointer is moved too far from the centre or used to hold an attitude that should be maintained with trim.

  • Keep the crosshair close to the centre during normal flight; the screen edges represent large control deflections.
  • Move back towards neutral as the aircraft approaches the required pitch or bank angle instead of waiting until it reaches that attitude.
  • Use elevator trim to hold the required pitch rather than leaving the pointer displaced continuously.
  • Disconnect the autopilot before taking manual control. Otherwise, the autopilot and mouse inputs can appear to fight one another.
  • Remember that a mouse has no physical spring centring. You must deliberately return the crosshair to the centre.

How do throttle and rudder work with Mouse Yoke?

FSX Mouse Yoke controls elevator and ailerons only; throttle, rudder, brakes and other aircraft systems remain separate.

Use the keyboard throttle commands, cockpit levers or a hardware throttle for power. Rudder can be controlled by its assigned keyboard commands or pedals. If you have no separate rudder control, FSX's Auto-rudder option can assist with basic turns and take-offs, although it is less suitable for deliberate crosswind or sideslip control.

Why does Ctrl+Y not activate Mouse Yoke?

If Ctrl+Y does nothing, the usual causes are a changed key assignment, an inactive simulator window, another flight mode or an aircraft system retaining control.

  • Click inside the FSX window, close any open menu or dialogue box, and try the command again.
  • Make sure the simulator is not paused and that you are not in Slew mode.
  • Open the controls settings and check the assignment for Mouse Yoke (on/off). Our guide to viewing and remapping FSX keyboard controls explains how to find altered or conflicting bindings.
  • Disconnect the autopilot, flight director control modes or any add-on aircraft system that may be overriding manual inputs.
  • Test with a default FSX aircraft. If Mouse Yoke works there, the problem is likely specific to the add-on aircraft rather than the mouse itself.

A standard mouse does not require joystick calibration for Mouse Yoke mode. If the pointer works in FSX menus but not as a flight control, concentrate on the key assignment and aircraft state rather than mouse drivers.

Should I use Mouse Yoke or a joystick?

Mouse Yoke is useful for occasional flying, testing an aircraft or operating FSX without dedicated hardware, but a self-centring joystick provides finer and more consistent manual control.
