To set up multiple monitors in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 (FS2004/FS9), extend the Windows desktop across the displays, run FS2004 in windowed mode, create extra view or instrument windows, select Undock Window for each, then drag and resize them on the other screens. Keep the displays on one GPU where possible.
Before opening FS2004: configure Windows
Windows must use Extend these displays, not duplicate or mirror mode. Arrange the monitor icons so their left, right and vertical positions match the physical screens, select the desired primary display and use each monitor's native resolution.
Connecting every display to the same graphics card avoids a common FS2004 problem where an undocked 3D view becomes black or stops updating after it crosses onto another adapter. Set up multiple monitors in FS2004
FS2004's native multi-monitor method is to create additional views or panel windows, undock them from the main simulator window and move them onto the extended desktop.
- Start in windowed mode. Launch FS2004 and press
Alt+Enterif it opens full-screen. Windowed mode makes the secondary windows easier to create, move and recover. - Position the main simulator window. Place it on the monitor that will show the primary cockpit view. Do not stretch it across every display unless you specifically want one continuous wide image.
- Create another 3D view. Open the Views menu, choose New View and select a cockpit or external view. The exact view choices depend on the aircraft.
- Open instrument windows if required. Use Views > Instrument Panel for available radios, GPS units and other pop-up panels. Add-on aircraft may provide a different selection.
- Undock the window. Right-click inside the new view or panel and select Undock Window. A separately movable window should appear.
- Move it to another monitor. Drag the undocked window by its title bar, resize it and set the desired camera direction or zoom. Repeat for each additional screen.
- Save the finished layout. Save a flight after arranging the windows. FS2004 can store window positions with the saved flight, although some add-on panels rebuild their windows whenever the aircraft loads.
If a window refuses to cross onto another screen, confirm that Windows is extending the desktop and that FS2004 is not in full-screen mode. Restart FS2004 after changing monitor order, primary-display selection or graphics connections.
Should I span one view or use separate views?
Use separate undocked views for independent cockpit or outside angles; span one enlarged window only when you want a single panoramic image across the bezels.

For a three-screen forward view, separate left, centre and right windows give more camera control, but their joins must be aligned manually with view direction and zoom. FS2004 does not calculate a matched multi-projector field of view automatically.
Why is the second monitor black, frozen or slow?
A blank or slow second screen is usually caused by full-screen mode, mixed graphics adapters or the cost of rendering another complete 3D view.
- Black or frozen view: return to windowed mode and move the window back to the primary monitor. If it works there, connect both displays to outputs on the same graphics card where possible.
- Very low FPS: close unneeded 3D windows first. Smaller view windows, fewer AI aircraft, simpler clouds and reduced scenery or autogen settings can recover performance.
- Window opens off-screen: restore the monitor arrangement used when the flight was saved, or load the flight with only the primary display active and reposition the window.
- Panel will not undock: try the aircraft's pop-up panel rather than the main 2D cockpit. Some third-party panels use gauges or fixed coordinates that do not behave correctly outside their original window.
- Incorrect size or mouse position: differing Windows display-scaling values can confuse this older application. Matching scaling across the monitors often prevents offsets and oversized title bars.
- Second screen blanks in full-screen mode: stay in windowed mode. Exclusive full-screen behaviour varies with graphics hardware and modern Windows versions.
Can FS2004 show different camera angles on each screen?
Yes, each undocked 3D window can use a different FS2004 view and camera direction. Change the active window before adjusting its view, pan or zoom so that commands affect the intended monitor.
If the native viewpoints are too restrictive, configurable cockpit, cabin and wing views from Active Camera 2004 can complement the arrangement. Another option is additional custom external viewpoints through FSCamera. These are legacy add-ons rather than multi-monitor renderers, so install one at a time and confirm compatibility with your FS2004 installation.
Do I need one graphics card per monitor?
No; one graphics card with enough outputs is normally the cleaner arrangement for FS2004. The simulator does not automatically assign each view to a separate GPU, and its older rendering engine often becomes limited by the work required to draw several views rather than by the number of physical display connectors.
