How do I set up multiple monitors in Prepar3D?

The most reliable procedure is to configure Windows first, then arrange undocked Prepar3D windows while the simulator is running in windowed mode.

  1. Connect every monitor before starting Prepar3D. Open Windows Display settings, select Extend these displays, and arrange the numbered screens so their on-screen positions match the physical layout. The Win+P shortcut also lets you select Extend.   2. Select the main display. Make the monitor carrying the principal cockpit or outside view the Windows primary display. Use each monitor's native resolution, and start with matching Windows scaling percentages where practical; mixed DPI scaling is a frequent cause of oversized panels and displaced mouse clicks.
  3. Start Prepar3D in windowed mode. Full-screen operation may constrain the main window to one display or make window management awkward. Build and test the layout in windowed mode before experimenting with full-screen or driver-level spanning.
  4. Open the required content. Use the Prepar3D Views menu to create another cockpit or outside view, or open an aircraft's instrument-panel window. Exact menu wording varies slightly between Prepar3D releases and aircraft.
  5. Undock each extra window. Select Undock Window from that view's context or window menu, then drag it across the extended desktop. A docked view remains confined to the main Prepar3D window.
  6. Position and resize the windows. Fill the target monitor without rendering large hidden areas. For independent outside views, apply the required heading offset and keep zoom, pitch and eye position consistent.   7. Save and test the arrangement. Save the scenario after positioning the windows, close Prepar3D normally, and check that the layout returns after a restart. Some add-on aircraft restore their own panel states, so verify the actual aircraft you intend to use rather than relying only on a default model.

Should I use View Groups for three monitors?

Use Prepar3D View Groups when two or more monitors form one continuous outside view, especially when the side screens are angled towards the pilot.

Open the View Groups manager from the Views area, create a group matching the monitor arrangement, assign the displays, and enter the physical dimensions, angles or bezel values requested by your Prepar3D version. Activate the group and check the horizon, runway edges and cockpit geometry across the joins.

Windows display numbers and Prepar3D display assignments do not always correspond, so identify each screen rather than assuming monitor 1 maps to display 1. If a side view appears on the wrong screen, swap the assignments in the group.

Do not combine a View Group with GPU-level display spanning unless there is a specific reason to do so. Spanning presents several monitors to Prepar3D as one enormous logical display, while View Groups need access to the individual displays to calculate separate viewing frustums.

Independent left, centre and right camera windows can imitate this arrangement, but matching their zoom values by eye often produces distorted geometry or misaligned horizon lines. View Groups are the better choice when visual continuity matters.

How do I put instruments on the second monitor?

Open the aircraft's 2D panel or individual gauge window, undock it, and move it to the second display.

Not every virtual-cockpit instrument has a detachable 2D equivalent. If an aircraft does not provide a panel or pop-up gauge window, Prepar3D cannot automatically extract that instrument from the 3D cockpit. Add-on aircraft may also use GPU-rendered avionics that behave differently from traditional gauges.

Why can I not move a Prepar3D view to another monitor?

Most immovable views are still docked, or Windows is duplicating the displays instead of extending the desktop.

  • The view stops at the main window edge: choose Undock Window before dragging it.
  • Both monitors show the same image: change Windows from Duplicate to Extend.
  • The window opens off-screen: reconnect the previous monitor arrangement or select the window and use Win+Shift+Arrow to move it between displays.
  • Gauges are the wrong size or clicks are offset: use matching Windows scaling percentages, sign out or restart if Windows requests it, and relaunch Prepar3D.
  • An undocked panel is black: test the same procedure with a default aircraft. If that works, the add-on's gauge technology or panel configuration is the likely cause.
  • A view disappears in full-screen mode: return to windowed mode. Once the layout works there, test other display modes one at a time.

How much performance do extra monitors cost?

Each additional outside camera makes Prepar3D render another view, so three independent views usually cost much more performance than one outside view plus an instrument panel.

Total pixel count also matters: three high-resolution monitors ask the GPU to shade far more pixels than one screen. If frame rate drops sharply, reduce the number of outside views first, then lower costly settings such as shadows, reflections, weather detail and traffic. A simpler 2D panel screen may need very little adjustment.

Mixed refresh rates can produce uneven motion even when the frame-rate counter looks acceptable. Test a common refresh rate and a sustainable frame-rate limit. Connecting the displays to the same graphics adapter is generally the least troublesome arrangement, although Prepar3D does not require identical monitors.
