How do I set up a T.Flight HOTAS X in MSFS?

This procedure applies to Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024 on PC, although their menu wording and profile layout differ slightly. The T.Flight HOTAS X is the PC/PlayStation 3 model, not the similarly named Xbox-certified HOTAS One.

T.Flight HOTAS X setup steps

  1. Select PC mode before connecting it. Move the hardware selector to PC, plug the HOTAS directly into the computer, and avoid an unpowered USB hub while setting it up.
  2. Test it in Windows. Press Windows key plus R, enter joy.cpl, select the T.Flight HOTAS X and open its properties. Move the stick, twist grip, throttle and rocker through their full ranges, then press every button. If an axis fails here, Microsoft Flight Simulator cannot configure it.
  3. Launch MSFS and select the HOTAS. Open the simulator's Controls or Controls Options screen and select the T.Flight device tile. It may have an automatic preset, but do not assume every default assignment is sensible.
  4. Create a custom profile. Duplicate the default preset where possible, or create a new one if the device is blank. Give it a recognisable name and make certain that profile remains active.
  5. Bind one physical control at a time. Use the simulator's input-scanning function, move only the desired axis, and assign the analogue Axis command. Do not use digital commands such as Ailerons Left or Elevator Up for the stick.
  6. Remove conflicts. Search by input after moving each axis and delete unwanted duplicate assignments. Pay particular attention to gamepads, rudder pedals and automatic HOTAS bindings.
  7. Apply and test. Load a simple aircraft, check the cockpit controls and external control surfaces, and verify that full stick and throttle travel produces the expected response.

Which HOTAS X axes should I assign?

The four essential assignments are aileron, elevator, throttle and rudder axes. Use analogue axis commands rather than button-style directional commands.

How should I adjust HOTAS X sensitivity?

Begin with neutral response curves and add only enough dead zone to stop unwanted movement around the centre. A large dead zone masks potentiometer noise but also creates an unresponsive area that makes small corrections difficult.

If pitch or roll feels too sharp, soften the centre response with a modest negative sensitivity curve rather than adding more dead zone. Check the Windows test panel first if an axis cannot reach its full range; then adjust the simulator's extremity setting only if necessary. Why is the throttle or rudder reversed?

An axis is reversed when its input direction does not match the aircraft control. Enable Reverse Axis only for the affected assignment, then test both ends of its travel in the cockpit.

A throttle that works backwards is usually an inversion problem. A throttle that moves erratically or fails to reach idle is more often a duplicate binding, a Windows calibration issue or an aircraft-specific throttle profile. Jet reverse thrust normally needs a separate button or aircraft-specific command because the HOTAS X lever has no dedicated reverse detent.

Why isn't Microsoft Flight Simulator detecting the HOTAS X?

If the HOTAS does not appear in joy.cpl, correct the Windows or USB problem before changing anything in MSFS. Check PC mode, reconnect it to another direct USB port, restart the computer and install the manufacturer's device driver if Windows has not configured it correctly.

  • Windows detects it but MSFS does not: close the simulator, connect the HOTAS first and relaunch it.
  • Buttons work but axes do not: replace digital direction bindings with the corresponding axis commands.
  • The aircraft moves without input: remove duplicate axes from gamepads or other controllers and disable piloting assistance that overrides manual input.
  • It works in one aircraft only: verify that the intended controls preset is active; MSFS 2024 and some aircraft can use aircraft-specific profiles.
  • The device appears as a generic controller: assign the controls manually by scanning each physical input rather than relying on its displayed name.

Does the T.Flight HOTAS X work with MSFS on Xbox?

No. The T.Flight HOTAS X is a PC/PlayStation 3 device and is not the Xbox-compatible HOTAS model. For Microsoft Flight Simulator on Xbox Series X|S, use a controller specifically certified for Xbox; changing the HOTAS X selector or using a USB adaptor does not make it natively compatible.
