Why do I spawn on the ground or outside the cockpit at a gate in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024?

MSFS 2024 can start you on foot or outside the cockpit at gates. Here is why it happens and how to get back into the pilot seat.
Adam McEnroe

In Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, spawning on the ground or outside the cockpit at a gate is usually normal behaviour, not a fault. Gate and parking starts can begin in on-foot mode for pre-flight and walk-around, while runway starts more often place you straight in the pilot seat. If it happens every flight, camera bindings or a saved view can also be part of it.

Why does MSFS 2024 start me outside the aircraft at a gate?

MSFS 2024 puts much more emphasis on boarding, walk-around and pre-flight flow than older versions. Because of that, some airport parking and gate starts begin with your pilot avatar on the apron or just outside the aircraft instead of already seated in the cockpit.

That is most noticeable when you start from a gate, stand or parking spot. Those starts are meant to feel like a cold-and-dark turnaround rather than an instant runway launch. So if you load in and find yourself standing beside the aircraft, that is often simply the intended start state.

If you are not actually standing on the ground, but instead looking at the aircraft from outside, that is slightly different. In that case the sim may have loaded you into an external camera rather than the pilot camera.

What start locations usually do in MSFS 2024?

Start typeWhat usually happensWhat it means
Gate or parking standYou may start on foot or in a cold-and-dark stateNormal for pre-flight and boarding flow
RunwayYou usually start in the cockpit ready to departBest choice if you want to skip setup
Activities or missionsThe start state is often predefinedThe sim decides where you begin
Custom aircraft with custom statesMay load in a non-standard camera or startup stateDepends on the aircraft and your saved options

How do I get back into the cockpit?

If the sim has started you outside on purpose, you do not usually need to fix anything permanent. You just need to switch from the on-foot or external view into the aircraft.

  1. Look for the board or enter prompt. When you spawn near the aircraft, MSFS 2024 often gives you an on-screen way to enter it. Use that first if it appears.
  2. Switch to the cockpit camera. Use your camera controls or camera menu to return to the pilot view. If you accidentally loaded in an external camera, this is all you need.
  3. Move to the pilot seat view. Some aircraft can place you in another seat or a custom interior angle rather than the captain's seat. Cycle cockpit views or reset the view to the default pilot position.
  4. Use the skip or ready option if available. On some starts, the sim lets you jump ahead from walk-around or setup to a more ready-to-fly state.
  5. Restart from a runway if you want an instant cockpit start. If your only goal is to get airborne quickly, a runway start is the simplest workaround.

How can I start in the cockpit every time?

There is not always a single global switch that forces every gate start to begin seated in the cockpit, because the start behaviour depends on location, activity and aircraft. We usually recommend changing the type of start rather than fighting the designed flow.

  • Choose a runway start when you want to be in the cockpit immediately.
  • Avoid mission or activity starts if you want full control over the starting state.
  • Use default aircraft as a test to see whether the behaviour is coming from one particular add-on.
  • Reset your camera bindings if the sim keeps loading an outside view.

When is it normal, and when is it a bug?

Normal behaviour

  • You spawn beside the aircraft at a gate or parking stand.
  • The aircraft is parked and not yet ready for taxi.
  • You can board the aircraft or switch into the cockpit without any error.

Probably a bug or setup issue

  • You spawn far away from the aircraft or in a strange location on the airport.
  • You always load into an external camera even after changing views.
  • It only happens with one aircraft, one airport or one controller profile.
  • Your view is clipped outside the fuselage, under the ground or otherwise obviously broken.

If MSFS 2024 always puts you outside the cockpit, check these things

  1. Test a default aircraft. Load a standard aircraft at a default airport. If the problem disappears, the issue is likely tied to a specific add-on aircraft or saved aircraft state.
  2. Test a runway start. If runway starts put you directly in the cockpit but gate starts do not, that points to normal parking-start behaviour rather than a fault.
  3. Review camera controls. A duplicated camera bind on a yoke, joystick, mouse or controller can switch you to an external view as soon as the flight loads.
  4. Reset custom views. If you saved a cockpit view in the wrong place, the sim can appear to spawn you outside even though it is technically loading your saved cockpit camera.
  5. Check add-ons. Aircraft, camera utilities and airport scenery can all affect spawn state. If needed, test with add-ons removed temporarily.
  6. Reload the flight. Some odd spawn positions are just a one-off loading glitch, especially after changing airports or aircraft repeatedly in the same session.

Why does it happen more often at gates than on runways?

Because a gate is a parking position, not a departure-ready start. MSFS 2024 treats that location more like the beginning of an aircraft turnaround, where boarding, checking the aircraft and entering the cockpit are part of the sequence.

Runway starts are the opposite. They are designed to skip almost everything and place you ready to move, so they are much less likely to begin on foot or outside the aircraft.

If you are outside the cockpit, are you actually in the wrong mode?

There are three common cases, and they feel similar even though they are different:

  • On-foot mode: your pilot is standing on the apron near the aircraft. This is usually intentional.
  • External aircraft camera: you are looking at the aircraft from outside, but not controlling an on-foot avatar. This is usually just a camera change.
  • Broken cockpit view: the camera is offset outside the fuselage or in the wrong place. This is usually a saved-view, binding or aircraft-specific issue.

That distinction matters, because the fix is different. On-foot mode needs you to board the aircraft; an external camera just needs a cockpit view switch; a broken cockpit camera may need a view reset or control clean-up.

The short version

If you spawn on the ground or outside the cockpit at a gate in MSFS 2024, the most likely reason is that you chose a parking or gate start and the sim is beginning the flight in its on-foot pre-flight flow. If you want to be seated instantly, switch to the cockpit camera, board the aircraft, or start from a runway instead. If it keeps happening in the wrong way, check custom views, camera bindings and any aircraft add-ons.
