Why do I spawn outside the cockpit at gates in MSFS 2024?

Adam McEnroe
In short

Learn why gate flights spawn outside, how to make MSFS 2024 start in the cockpit, and how to fix camera or aircraft-specific faults.

Spawning beside the aircraft at a gate in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is usually intentional: gate and parking starts can open in walkaround mode, while runway starts normally seat you in the cockpit. Enter the aircraft or choose a runway start; persistent outside views instead point to camera bindings or saved views.

How do I get back into the cockpit quickly?

First identify whether you are walking on the apron, viewing the aircraft through an external camera, or using an internal camera positioned outside the fuselage.

A mistake we see constantly is cycling camera modes when the simulator has actually placed the pilot in walkaround mode. Those are different states: an external-camera command does not necessarily board the aircraft.

  1. If you are on foot, approach the aircraft. Use the entry marker, interaction prompt or assigned enter/exit aircraft command. The available interaction can vary with the aircraft.
  2. If you are only looking from outside, select the cockpit camera. Camera bindings vary between keyboard, controller, stick and custom profiles. Our reference for MSFS 2024 keyboard controls helps identify the relevant view commands.
  3. If the internal view is misplaced, reset it. Return to the default cockpit position rather than repeatedly moving the camera back by hand.
  4. If the flight offers a skip or ready option, use it. Some activities let you bypass the walkaround or pre-flight stage, although scripted missions may not.

Why do MSFS 2024 gate starts begin outside the cockpit?

Gate, ramp and parking positions can use MSFS 2024’s walkaround-based pre-flight flow, placing the pilot beside a parked aircraft rather than directly in the left seat.

The selected departure position matters. A parking start may load the aircraft cold and dark and expect you to board it; a runway start normally places you in the cockpit with the aircraft prepared for departure. The precise aircraft state can still vary by aircraft and activity.

Career missions, training flights and other scripted activities can override Free Flight behaviour. Their starting position, aircraft state and available shortcuts are controlled by the activity rather than solely by the departure point you selected.

If you want to use the outside start rather than skip it, our guide explains how walkaround and movement inside an aircraft work.

How can I make MSFS 2024 start in the cockpit?

For a dependable seated start in Free Flight, select a runway as the departure position instead of a gate, stand or ramp.

  • Choose a runway start when you want to load in the cockpit and depart without boarding or completing a walkaround.
  • Choose a gate or parking position when you want a parked or cold-and-dark start and do not mind entering the aircraft first.
  • Use an offered skip option when you want the gate position but not the full pre-flight sequence.
  • Avoid scripted activities when you need complete control over the starting position and aircraft state.

There is no dependable universal setting that forces every aircraft, Free Flight session and scripted activity to begin in the cockpit. A runway departure is the simplest solution; if you need to remain at a gate, board the aircraft after loading.

Is spawning outside at a gate normal or a bug?

It is normal when you appear beside the correct aircraft at the selected parking position and can enter it without reloading the flight.

Signs of an intended walkaround start

  • You are standing close to the aircraft at the chosen gate or stand.
  • Walkaround controls work and an entry interaction is available.
  • The aircraft is parked and may be cold and dark.
  • Changing the departure to a runway starts you in the cockpit.

Signs of a camera or spawn fault

  • You appear under the ground, inside scenery or far from the aircraft.
  • Selecting the cockpit camera puts the viewpoint outside the fuselage.
  • The simulator switches back to an external view immediately after you correct it.
  • The problem occurs with only one aircraft, airport or controller profile.

A one-off bad position often clears after returning to the main menu and loading the flight again. If it repeats consistently, test the components separately rather than assuming all gate starts are broken.

What if it happens with only one aircraft or airport?

A fault limited to one aircraft or airport usually comes from that aircraft’s camera configuration, the stand placement, add-on scenery or a conflicting control profile.

  1. Establish a clean comparison. Load a stock aircraft at an airport without third-party scenery. If that works, the general walkaround system is not the cause.
  2. Change only the departure position. Try the same aircraft and airport from a runway, then from another stand. One broken stand suggests an airport spawn-point problem.
  3. Check every connected controller. A duplicated camera binding or held switch on a mouse, gamepad, yoke or joystick can select an outside view as the flight loads. Disconnect extra devices or test a clean control profile.
  4. Reset aircraft-specific views. A cockpit offset or custom camera mapped beyond the fuselage can look like an outside spawn. Follow our instructions for replacing or resetting custom cockpit views.
  5. Temporarily disable relevant add-ons. On platforms that permit it, test without the affected aircraft, airport scenery or other Community packages, then restore them one at a time.

If you can enter the cockpit but cannot look around once seated, the spawn has been fixed; that is a separate input or camera-focus issue. Use our checks for cockpit mouse-panning and control-profile conflicts.
