To start an Airbus A380 cold and dark in a flight simulator, establish battery and external power, align the inertial systems, configure fuel and pneumatics, initialise the flight computers, start the APU, then use the engine-start selector and four engine master switches. Which Airbus A380 startup procedure should I use?

Use the checklist supplied with the add-on whenever it conflicts with a generic A380 flow. A full-system aircraft expects correct electrical and pneumatic sequencing, while a simplified or converted model may have decorative overhead switches and rely on the simulator's automatic engine-start command.

Airbus A380 cold-and-dark start checklist

The reliable method is to establish electrical power and a pneumatic source before touching an engine master. The same bus, fuel and bleed-air principles are explained in our general cold-and-dark aircraft flow.

  1. Load a true cold-and-dark state. Place the A380 at a parking stand rather than on a runway, then apply the add-on's cold-and-dark preset if it has one. Allow the cockpit and electronic flight bag to finish loading before operating switches.
  2. Secure the aircraft. Set the parking brake or fit chocks, put all thrust levers at idle, confirm all four engine masters are off and leave the engine-start selector at NORM. Check that fuel has actually been loaded.
  3. Establish electrical power. Switch on the fitted batteries, typically BAT 1, BAT 2 and APU BAT where modelled. Connect ground power through the aircraft's ground-services panel, wait for EXT PWR to show available, then select it on. Requesting a ground power unit does not always connect it to the electrical buses.
  4. Begin inertial alignment. Set the modelled ADIRS or inertial-reference selectors to NAV and confirm the aircraft position if the flight-management system requests it. Do this before pushback; moving the aircraft can delay or invalidate a realistic alignment.
  5. Configure the overhead panel. Set crew oxygen, emergency lighting and signs as required. After loading fuel, place the normal fuel-pump controls on or in their automatic positions. Leave transfer, hydraulic and pack controls in their normal automatic states unless the add-on's checklist says otherwise.
  6. Initialise the flight-management system. Enter or import the route, departure runway, cruise level, fuel, payload and take-off data through the MFD/FMS and electronic flight bag. At minimum, make sure the cockpit and loading tool agree on fuel quantity and centre of gravity.
  7. Start the APU. Select APU MASTER, then APU START. Wait for the ECAM to show APU AVAIL and establish APU bleed air. Keep external power connected until the APU's electrical and pneumatic sources are ready; external electrical power alone cannot normally crank an engine.
  8. Complete the before-start items. Close the doors, confirm the tug is connected if pushing back, switch on the beacon and verify that fuel pumps and APU bleed are available. Keep the packs in their normal setting unless this particular model explicitly requires a packs-off start.
  9. Start the four engines. Move the engine-start selector to IGN/START or its equivalent, then switch on one engine master. Follow the ECL's engine order; if none is supplied, starting 1-2-3-4 one at a time is a conservative simulator method. Watch the ECAM for core rotation, ignition or fuel flow, EGT rise, oil pressure and stable idle or AVAIL before starting the next engine. Do not move the thrust levers—the FADEC controls the normal start.
  10. Complete the after-start flow. Return the start selector to NORM. Once all four engine generators and bleed sources are available, switch off APU bleed and shut down the APU unless the checklist requires it to remain running. Set flaps and trim, arm the spoilers, check the flight controls, select anti-ice and exterior lights as conditions require, and run the take-off configuration test.

Why won't the A380 engines start?

Most A380 start failures come from missing pneumatic air, an incomplete fuel setup or a panel state left half-configured by a preset.

  • The displays remain dark: confirm the batteries are on and select the available external-power switch in the cockpit. Merely placing a ground unit beside the aircraft may not energise it.
  • The APU will not start: check the APU battery, fuel quantity and APU master. After selecting the master, allow the simulated control system time to initialise before pressing START.
  • Nothing happens when an engine master is switched on: verify APU AVAIL, APU BLEED and IGN/START. Ground electrical power supplies electricity, not starting air, unless the add-on separately models a ground pneumatic cart.
  • The engine rotates but does not light: confirm the relevant fuel pumps are operating and that the aircraft contains usable fuel. Stop trying to start several engines together; wait for one to reach stable idle before selecting another.
  • A start aborts or EGT rises abnormally: turn that engine master off and let the engine spool down and cool before resetting the procedure. Repeatedly cycling the master can preserve or worsen the failed state in a system-rich add-on.
  • Navigation warnings remain after startup: the inertial systems may still be aligning, may not have a confirmed position or may have been switched on after pushback. Engine availability does not mean navigation is ready.

Can I use automatic engine start instead?

Use automatic engine start only when the A380 is simplified or you deliberately want to skip the manual procedure. It may work well with aircraft based on default simulator systems, but complex A380 add-ons can ignore it or end up with engines running while electrical, bleed and flight-management systems remain incorrectly configured.

Do not mix auto-start with a partly completed manual start. Reload a clean cold-and-dark preset before trying the other method, otherwise diagnosing the resulting switch state becomes unnecessarily difficult.

When is the A380 ready to taxi?

The A380 is ready to taxi only after all four engines are stable and the aircraft has passed its after-start and take-off configuration checks.

  • All four engines show stable idle or AVAIL, with their generators and bleed sources online.
  • The APU has been shut down or intentionally retained, and no relevant ECAM caution remains.
  • The inertial systems are aligned and the route, performance data and take-off speeds are valid.
  • Flaps, trim, spoilers, flight controls, anti-ice and lights are configured for the departure.
  • Doors are closed, chocks and tug are clear, and the brakes are checked as the aircraft begins to move.
