How do I take screenshots in FS2004?

Ian Stephens
In short

Take screenshots in FS2004 with Print Screen, save them correctly, and fix black, blank or overwritten captures on modern Windows.

To take a screenshot in FS2004, press Print Screen while the simulator is visible, then paste the clipboard image into Paint or another image editor with Ctrl+V and save it. FS2004 does not automatically save each capture, so paste and save it before taking another screenshot.

How to save an FS2004 screenshot

FS2004's standard screenshot workflow uses the Windows clipboard rather than an FS9 screenshot folder.

  1. Prepare the view. Position the aircraft and camera, move the mouse pointer out of frame and allow any red status messages to disappear.
  2. Capture the screen. Press Print Screen or PrtScn. Some laptop keyboards require Fn as well. If Windows opens the Snipping Tool instead, choose a full-screen capture.
  3. Paste immediately. Switch to Paint or another image editor and press Ctrl+V. Another screenshot or copied item can replace the image held on the clipboard.
  4. Crop and save. PNG preserves cockpit text and fine details cleanly. JPEG produces a smaller file but can introduce compression artefacts, especially around gauges and labels.

Where are FS2004 screenshots saved?

A normal Print Screen capture is not saved anywhere until you paste it into an image editor and choose a filename and folder. This differs from newer simulators that automatically create screenshot files.

Game Bar and graphics-driver capture tools save to their own configured folders, not an FS2004 directory. Compatibility can vary because FS9 uses an older DirectX rendering path. Our broader guide covers Windows and simulator screenshot capture methods in more detail.

How do I take several screenshots without overwriting them?

Use an auto-saving capture tool if you need a rapid sequence, because repeated Print Screen presses do not create a gallery in FS2004.

On a compatible Windows installation, Game Bar or the capture function supplied with your graphics software can save each image separately. Otherwise, pause between shots to paste and save each clipboard image. A dedicated capture utility is also preferable when photographing an entire approach or formation flight.

If you need to reproduce a particular moment rather than capture continuously, use the simulator's flight-recording and playback functions, then take the screenshot during playback.

Why is my FS2004 screenshot black or blank?

A black FS2004 screenshot usually means the capture method could not read the simulator's exclusive full-screen DirectX output.

  • Press Alt+Enter to switch FS2004 to windowed mode, then try Print Screen again.
  • Use Alt+Print Screen while the FS2004 window is active.
  • Try Windows Snipping Tool in windowed mode if ordinary Print Screen captures a black frame.
  • If Game Bar produces blank images or does not recognise FS9, return to the clipboard-and-Paint method.
  • Check that the pasted image was not replaced by another copied item before saving.

With multiple monitors, Print Screen may capture the whole virtual desktop. Crop the required monitor afterwards, or use Alt+Print Screen with FS2004 windowed.

How can I make FS2004 screenshots look better?

Capture at the highest practical simulator resolution and remove distractions before pressing Print Screen.

  • Hide menus, ATC windows, aircraft labels and status text that should not appear in the finished image.
  • Move the pointer away from the aircraft and instrument panel.
  • Avoid excessive camera zoom, which can make the aircraft or cockpit look distorted.
  • Save a full-resolution PNG master before resizing or converting it for upload.
  • Do not enlarge a small screenshot afterwards; it cannot recover detail FS2004 did not render.

You can browse examples of FS2004 aircraft and scenery screenshots to compare exterior angles, cockpit framing and image proportions.
