Take screenshots in FS2004 with Print Screen, find saved captures, avoid overwritten images, and fix black or blank screenshots in Windows.
To take a screenshot in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 (FS2004 or FS9), press Print Screen while the simulator is visible, switch to Paint or another image editor, press Ctrl+V, then save the image. FS2004's basic method copies one capture to the Windows clipboard; it does not create a screenshot file automatically.
How to take and save an FS2004 screenshot
- Prepare the view. Position the aircraft and camera, close unwanted menus or ATC windows, move the mouse pointer out of frame and let temporary red status messages disappear.
- Press Print Screen. The key may be labelled PrtSc, PrtScn or similar. A laptop may require Fn to be held at the same time. FS2004 normally gives no confirmation that the capture worked.
- Paste the capture. Switch to Paint or another image editor and press Ctrl+V. Do this before taking another screenshot or copying anything else, as either action can replace the image on the clipboard.
- Crop and save. Save a full-resolution PNG when you want sharp instrument text and clean edges. JPEG creates smaller files, but compression can blur gauges, labels and fine scenery detail.
What if Print Screen opens the Snipping Tool?
Some Windows installations assign the Print Screen key to the Snipping Tool instead of making an immediate full-screen clipboard capture. Select its full-screen mode, complete the capture and save the resulting image from the editor or notification.
If the Snipping Tool overlay does not appear over full-screen FS2004, press Alt+Enter to switch the simulator to windowed mode and try again. You can also disable the Windows option that uses Print Screen to open screen capture if you prefer the traditional clipboard behaviour; the setting's location and wording vary between Windows releases.
Does FS2004 have a screenshot folder?
FS2004 has no default screenshot folder for ordinary Print Screen captures because that method places the image on the clipboard rather than writing a file.

How do I take several screenshots without overwriting them?
Use an auto-saving Windows or graphics-driver capture shortcut when you need several FS2004 screenshots in quick succession.
Try Windows+Print Screen first; each successful capture should create a separate numbered file. Game Bar is another option, but it may not recognise FS9 reliably because the simulator uses an older DirectX rendering path. If either method returns blank images, use windowed mode or stop between shots to paste and save each Print Screen capture manually.
The mistake we see most often is pressing Print Screen several times and expecting FS2004 to build a gallery. With the basic clipboard method, each new capture replaces the previous one. Clipboard history should not be treated as a dependable screenshot archive.
Why is my FS2004 screenshot black or blank?
A black FS2004 screenshot usually means the capture method could not read the simulator's exclusive full-screen output.
- Press Alt+Enter to place FS2004 in windowed mode, then capture it again.
- With the simulator window active, try Alt+Print Screen and paste the result into Paint.
- Use the Snipping Tool's full-screen or window capture while FS2004 is windowed.
- If Game Bar or a graphics-driver overlay produces a black image, return to Print Screen and Paint rather than assuming the screenshot was saved correctly.
- Confirm that the image was actually pasted before closing the editor or copying another item.
Why does Print Screen capture the wrong monitor or the whole desktop?
Standard Print Screen may capture the complete virtual desktop when several monitors are connected. Crop the required screen afterwards, or run FS2004 in windowed mode and use Alt+Print Screen to capture only the active simulator window.
How can I make FS2004 screenshots look better?
Use the highest practical simulator resolution, compose the view before capturing and keep an untouched PNG master before resizing the image.
- Hide menus, ATC windows, aircraft labels and status text that are not part of the intended picture.
- Move the pointer away from the cockpit or aircraft.
- Avoid extreme zoom settings, which can distort the aircraft's proportions or make a cockpit view look unnatural.
- Capture at the final aspect ratio where possible instead of heavily cropping a small image.
- Do not enlarge a low-resolution screenshot afterwards; upscaling cannot restore detail that FS2004 did not render.
