Learn how Train Sim World Journey Mode organises tutorials, scenarios and services, tracks progress, and differs from Timetable and Free Roam.
Journey Mode in Train Sim World is a route-specific, guided playlist of training modules, scenarios and selected timetable services. It arranges them into chapters so you can learn the trains and sample a route in a sensible order, while recording completion and scores. It is not a story campaign or career economy.
What does Journey Mode include?
A route's Journey combines several types of activity into one curated sequence:
- Training modules introduce the cab, controls and basic operating procedure.
- Scenarios provide scripted tasks, unusual conditions or operational problems.
- Timetable services are selected passenger or freight workings, usually with predetermined trains, times, weather and seasonal conditions.
The chapters and total number of activities vary by route. Extra locomotive add-ons may add services or scenarios without necessarily being inserted into the route's existing Journey. Our overview of Train Sim World routes and add-ons explains how route ownership determines the content available.
Each activity starts as a self-contained run. Your train position, delays and decisions do not carry into the next one, so Journey Mode should not be mistaken for a persistent railway career.
How do you play Journey Mode?
You play Journey Mode by selecting an installed route, opening its Journey panel and completing the listed activities.
- Select the route. Open the route or activity selection screen and choose the route whose content you want to play. Exact menu labels vary between Train Sim World releases.
- Open its Journey. Choose an available chapter and activity. The first chapter usually begins with introductory training before moving to scenarios and full services.
- Read the briefing. Check the assigned locomotive, stopping pattern, weather and any special instructions before taking control.
- Complete every objective. Follow stopping markers, signals and objective prompts until the service or scenario formally ends.
- Continue through the results screen. Let the game register the result before returning to the menu. The next activity is then presented or unlocked where sequential progression is used.
Activities can normally be replayed to improve a score or medal. A lower score does not usually block completion if all required objectives were satisfied, although failing a scenario objective or passing a signal at danger can end the run.
How is Journey Mode different from Timetable and Free Roam?
Journey Mode chooses activities for you, while Timetable and Free Roam provide progressively more control over what you operate.
| Mode | Structure | Best used for |
|---|---|---|
| Journey Mode | Route-specific chapters containing selected training, scenarios and services | Learning a route and sampling its main content in a guided order |
| Timetable Mode | Individual scheduled services selected by train, departure time or location | Running a particular working without completing earlier chapters |
| Free Roam | Player-created session with chosen trains and paths | Experimenting outside the route's preset services |
A timetable service included in Journey Mode generally uses the same underlying railway operation, but the Journey entry may impose specific conditions. See our guide to scheduled services and timetable selection for the less structured alternative. For complete control over train placement and routing, use our instructions for building a Free Roam session.
Does Journey Mode unlock trains or routes?
Completing Journey Mode records progress but does not unlock route or locomotive DLC that you do not own.
Progress is associated with the active in-game profile. Starting a new profile normally produces a fresh completion record, while transferring progress between platforms or major game releases depends on the migration support offered by that release.
Can you skip Journey activities?
You do not need to finish Journey Mode before using an owned route's other playable content.
Some releases present Journey activities sequentially, while others make more of the list selectable. If a later entry is unavailable, the equivalent service may still be accessible independently through Timetable Mode, although completing it there may not mark the Journey node as finished.
Why is Journey progress not being recorded?
Journey progress usually fails to register because the run was abandoned early, launched from another mode or played under a different profile.
- Launch the activity from the Journey screen when you want credit for its chapter entry.
- Reach the formal end of the service and continue through the completion or results screen.
- Confirm that the correct player profile is active.
- Check that the required route and locomotive add-ons are fully installed and recognised.
- If the menu has not updated after a completed run, return to the main menu or restart the simulator before replaying the entire activity.
A common mistake we see is completing what appears to be the same service through Timetable Mode and expecting the Journey chapter to advance. For the most reliable result, always start that specific entry from its Journey tile.
