How do I set up a joystick in Train Sim World?

Train Sim World does not provide universal native support for generic flight joysticks. On PC, you can usually use one by translating its buttons and axes into keyboard or gamepad commands; true analogue lever control is limited. RailDriver is supported on compatible PC locomotives, while console versions generally require their standard gamepads.

Which controllers does Train Sim World support natively?

A generic USB flight stick is not a plug-and-play Train Sim World controller, even when Windows recognises it correctly. Support differs by device type and platform.

How do I set up a generic joystick on PC?

Set up a generic joystick by testing it in Windows and then using one input-translation layer to map it to Train Sim World's existing keyboard or gamepad commands.

  1. Connect and test the hardware. Attach the joystick before launching the simulator. Press Windows key plus R, enter joy.cpl, select the device and verify that every button and axis responds. Calibrate it there if its centre or full travel is wrong.
  2. Choose one mapping method. If Steam recognises the device, Steam Input may translate it into keyboard or virtual gamepad commands for a Steam copy of the game. Otherwise, use a trusted local input-mapping utility capable of generating keystrokes or virtual gamepad input.
  3. Create a Train Sim World profile. Start with digital commands such as power increase and decrease, train-brake increase and decrease, reverser, horn, vigilance acknowledgement and camera controls. Match the assignments shown by the control scheme selected in your game rather than copying keys from an older release.
  4. Configure axes cautiously. Add a centre dead zone and map each direction to an increase or decrease command. Make sure the mapped command stops when the axis leaves its activation zone; otherwise, a lever can continue moving to full power or full brake.

HOTAS sets often expose the stick and throttle as two separate USB devices. Confirm that both appear in joy.cpl and that the mapping utility can read them together.

Can joystick axes control the throttle and brakes?

Ordinary keyboard or virtual-gamepad mapping does not usually provide true one-to-one cab lever positions. Train Sim World's increase and decrease commands are relative: holding an input moves the in-game lever until the input is released, rather than matching the physical axis position.

Axis bands can make a throttle quadrant usable, but they need careful dead zones and release behaviour. A common mistake we see is mapping an entire half-axis to a held key, which sends the locomotive directly towards maximum power or braking.

Unofficial PC interface tools may convert joystick axes into RailDriver-style inputs and provide more direct lever control. These depend on the Train Sim World release, locomotive implementation and third-party software, so they are less dependable than native RailDriver support.

When should I choose RailDriver instead?

Choose RailDriver when proportional throttle and brake levers matter more than reusing flight-simulation hardware. Connect it before launching Train Sim World, enable the external controller in the game's control settings and complete the supplied calibration process, moving each lever through its requested range.

RailDriver support is PC-only, and not every locomotive necessarily implements every control. If it works with one train but not another, check locomotive compatibility before recalibrating the hardware repeatedly.

Why is my joystick not working in Train Sim World?

A joystick can work in Windows yet do nothing in Train Sim World because the game normally has no generic flight-stick profile to load.

  • Missing from joy.cpl: reconnect it directly to the PC, try another USB port and check its driver or hardware mode.
  • Visible in Windows but not the mapper: check whether the stick and throttle are separate devices and whether the utility supports both.
  • Inputs happen twice: disable either Steam Input or the other virtual-controller layer. Running both commonly produces doubled commands and erratic menu movement.
  • Throttle or brake creeps: increase the dead zone and recalibrate the axis.
  • Cab lever runs to its limit: the mapper is holding an increase or decrease command. Correct its release action or use shorter axis bands.
  • Buttons work but axes do not: the utility may support keystroke mapping without analogue or virtual-gamepad output.

Can I use a joystick on PlayStation or Xbox?

Generic joystick remapping is effectively a PC-only workaround. Train Sim World's console editions do not provide the external mapping utilities needed to convert arbitrary flight-stick inputs, and recognition by another console game does not establish compatibility with Train Sim World. Use the console's supported standard controller instead.
