Learn what Train Sim World layers add to routes, how DLC ownership unlocks services and AI traffic, and why expected layers may be missing.
In Train Sim World, a layer is extra route content activated by owning and installing a compatible add-on. It can add playable timetable services, AI trains, static stock or extra rolling stock in defined roles. Layers make a route busier and more varied, but usually do not extend its track or scenery.
How do layers change a Train Sim World route?
Train Sim World layers change the timetable and traffic operating over an existing route. The developer authors each layer for a particular route and timetable, including its trains, paths, stops, formations and timings.
- Playable services: A compatible locomotive or unit gains services that can be selected in Timetable Mode.
- AI-only traffic: Extra trains appear around stations, depots, junctions and portals without necessarily being driveable.
- Static stock: Sidings and depots may contain suitable parked trains, making them feel less empty.
- Operational variety: Additional traffic can produce more signal checks, conflicting movements and encounters with other trains.
- Period and regional detail: Freight, empty-stock or supporting passenger movements can make the railway resemble the intended operating pattern more closely.
The effect varies substantially. One layer might add a large group of playable services, while another contributes only a few background movements. This is why our route recommendations based on traffic and timetable variety consider compatible add-ons as well as the route supplied in the base package.
What is the difference between a layer and substitution?
A layer adds authored content to a timetable, while substitution replaces the rolling stock assigned to an existing service. They are related systems, but they do not produce the same result.

A custom livery is different again: it changes a train's appearance rather than adding services. Scenarios are also separately authored and do not automatically inherit every timetable layer.
What do you need to unlock a layer?
A layer loads only when the base route, exact prerequisite content and applicable timetable are all available to the simulator.
- Own the route. The layer cannot operate without the route for which it was authored.
- Own the specified dependency. This may be another route, a locomotive add-on or a gameplay pack. Owning a visually similar train does not satisfy the requirement.
- Install every required add-on. Content shown in an account library may still need to be downloaded through the platform's add-on manager.
- Select the correct timetable. Routes with original, revised or platform-specific timetables may not provide identical layers in each version.
- Reload the route after installation. Restarting Train Sim World allows it to detect newly installed entitlements and rebuild the available content list.

Why is an expected Train Sim World layer missing?
Missing layers are usually caused by an uninstalled dependency, the wrong timetable or a platform-specific content restriction.
- Owned but not installed: Confirm that both the route and prerequisite DLC are installed, not merely listed as purchased.
- Wrong timetable selected: Change to the timetable named for the layer or train. Alternate timetables can have different service sets.
- Incorrect dependency: A locomotive from another add-on will not unlock the layer unless that exact DLC is supported.
- AI-only implementation: Some layers add visible traffic but no service that the player can select.
- Platform variation: Timetables on memory-constrained hardware may contain fewer trains. DLC also needs to be recognised under the account and platform being used.
- Content not recognised: Check the platform's installed-content manager, complete pending downloads and restart the game.
In Timetable Mode, inspect the available locomotive or operator filters. If the expected train is absent, either its layer has not loaded or that add-on contributes only non-playable traffic.
Can any owned train become a route layer?
No; owning a train does not automatically create timetable services for every compatible railway. A developer must author the layer, and matching electrification, signalling or loading gauge alone is not enough.

Do layers affect performance or extend the route?
Layers do not normally extend a route's geographical boundaries or merge two separately sold routes. Their main effect is on the service pattern and the trains visible within the existing railway.
Extra AI traffic can increase processor and memory demand, particularly around large stations and depots. It may also create more restrictive signals because additional trains occupy blocks and cross junctions. Some platforms therefore use reduced timetable variants rather than loading every possible movement.
If a route provides an alternate lighter timetable, choose that when traffic density causes performance problems. Removing an add-on can also remove its layer, but that is a blunt fix because the same DLC may supply trains or services elsewhere.
