How do I turn on and adjust panel lights in FSX?

In FSX and FSX: Steam Edition, give the aircraft electrical power, then press Shift+L to toggle panel lights or operate its PANEL/INSTR light switch. Use the aircraft’s rheostat knobs to adjust brightness where modelled. L toggles all assigned aircraft lights, so it is a poor choice when you only need the panel.

How do I turn on FSX cockpit panel lights?

Shift+L is the standard FSX panel-light command, but the selected aircraft may also require working electrics and its own cockpit switches.

1. Set a suitable time. Test after sunset or in a dark hangar because some backlighting is almost invisible in daylight.
2. Supply electrical power. Switch on the battery or master. Complex add-ons may require an alternator, generator, APU or running engine before the lighting bus is powered.
3. Return keyboard focus to FSX. Click the main simulator view if a menu, dialogue or another program was active.
4. Press Shift+L. This toggles the panel-light state. Pressing it again switches that state off.
5. Operate the cockpit controls. Look for switches or knobs labelled PANEL, INSTR, INTEG, FLOOD, DOME or CABIN. Aircraft-specific controls can override or supplement the standard command.

Which panel light switch should I use?

Use the switch matching the part of the cockpit you want illuminated; panel backlighting, floodlights, displays and cabin lights are separate systems in many aircraft.

A mistake we see constantly is treating every dark item as part of one circuit. An illuminated panel does not prove that the avionics or display brightness is on, while bright annunciators do not prove that the panel floodlights work. How do I adjust panel light dimmers?

FSX has no universal keyboard shortcut for panel-light brightness, so adjustment depends on rheostats or dimmer controls built into the aircraft.

Enable cockpit tooltips if needed, then hover over likely knobs. Depending on the model, a dimmer may respond to left and right clicks, click-and-drag movement or the mouse wheel. Detailed airliners can have separate dimmers for the main instrument panel, pedestal, overhead, floodlights and each display.

If a knob moves but the brightness does not change, check that the relevant light switch and electrical bus are on. If it never moves, it may be decorative. Many default, older and freeware aircraft provide only a fixed on/off night texture rather than continuously variable lighting.

The 2D panel and virtual cockpit can also render the same setting differently. Choose instrument backlighting when you need readable markings without filling the cockpit with glare; use flood or dome lighting when you need to see unlit controls. Why is my FSX panel still dark?

A persistently dark panel usually points to missing electrical power, a changed control assignment, aircraft-specific lighting logic or an incompatible model or texture.

1. Test a default FSX aircraft at night. If Shift+L works there, the keyboard command is sound and the original aircraft is the problem.
2. Check the control assignment. Search FSX Controls settings for the panel-light command and restore or reassign it if the shortcut fails in every aircraft. Also check for joystick software or another binding intercepting the keys.
3. Follow the aircraft’s start-up sequence. A battery alone may not energise every lighting bus in a detailed add-on.
4. Compare the 2D panel and virtual cockpit. If only one view lights correctly, the aircraft’s model, gauges or night textures are at fault rather than the global command.
5. Compare liveries. If the base aircraft lights correctly but one repaint remains dark, that repaint may be missing or referencing incompatible light-map textures.
6. Check legacy add-on compatibility. For an older aircraft with broken virtual-cockpit lighting, temporarily disable FSX’s DirectX 10 Preview and reload the simulator as a diagnostic test.

If the lights briefly worked and then went out, remember that Shift+L is a toggle. Pressing it repeatedly while also moving the aircraft’s own switch can leave the simulator command and the visible cockpit control apparently out of step. Set the cockpit switch deliberately, then test the keyboard command once.

Is the flying panel dark, or is the panel itself missing?

If the entire 2D flying panel is absent rather than merely unlit, a lighting command will not restore it.

Are blank avionics screens a panel-light problem?

Blank GPS, glass-cockpit or navigation displays usually indicate an avionics or electrical problem, not failed panel lighting.

Check the avionics master, generators and electrical buses, then turn up the display’s own brightness control. Some displays initialise only after the aircraft has sufficient power. Panel backlighting can remain fully visible while an unpowered screen stays black.

How do I turn on cockpit or cabin lights in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024?

In Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, use the aircraft’s cockpit light switches and dimmers or a lighting command assigned in the active control profile; do not assume that the FSX Shift+L shortcut applies.

1. Power the aircraft. Battery, external power, an APU or running engines may be required, depending on the aircraft.
2. Use cockpit interaction mode. Find PANEL, INSTRUMENT, FLOOD, DOME or CABIN controls, commonly on the overhead or side panels.
3. Check the active control profile. Search its assignments for terms such as “light”, “cockpit” or “panel”. Bindings can differ between keyboards, controllers, aircraft and custom profiles.
4. Adjust each lighting zone. Screens, integral backlighting, floodlights and dome lights often have independent brightness controls.

Passenger-cabin lighting is aircraft-dependent. Some aircraft provide cabin controls on the overhead, flight-attendant panel or an electronic tablet; others do not model an accessible passenger cabin or controllable cabin lights. This applies across the PC, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 versions, although the cursor and controller interaction method differs by platform and profile.

What does DCS Cockpit Global Illumination do?

DCS Cockpit Global Illumination is a graphics option affecting ambient and indirect illumination inside the cockpit; it does not replace the aircraft module’s panel-light switches or brightness knobs.

If a DCS cockpit is dark, first supply electrical power and use the module-specific console, instrument and floodlight controls. Compare the global-illumination setting only when diagnosing how external or ambient light is rendered. Control names and lighting systems vary substantially between DCS aircraft modules.
