Why do land and water textures turn light blue in FSX?

Land and water turn light blue in FSX when the simulator loads the wrong terrain or water assets, or when its graphics path cannot render them correctly. The usual causes are a conflicting scenery or texture add-on, DirectX 10 Preview or injector incompatibility, a stale shader cache, or damaged default files.

The same troubleshooting order applies to boxed Microsoft Flight Simulator X and FSX: Steam Edition. Do not install another water-texture pack immediately; first establish whether the blue area is genuine water, misclassified terrain or a rendering fault.

What does the blue colour tell you?

The pattern shows whether FSX is failing globally or reading one scenery layer incorrectly.

How do I fix light-blue terrain and water in FSX?

Work through reversible tests first, restarting FSX after each significant change so that scenery and shaders are reloaded.

  1. Check a completely different default area. Load a stock airport far from the affected region. If it looks normal, leave the core FSX files alone and investigate scenery covering the original location. If the whole world is blue, continue with the graphics and file checks below.
  2. Test the DirectX 9 rendering path. Turn off DirectX 10 Preview in the Display or Graphics settings, close FSX fully and reopen it. Also disable any graphics injector or post-processing wrapper temporarily.   3. Disable the most recent scenery or texture add-on. Untick its area in the Scenery Library, restart FSX and test again. Re-enable packages one at a time rather than moving several layers together.   4. Rebuild the shader cache. Close FSX, then rename rather than delete its Shaders or Shaders10 cache folder. It is normally beneath the simulator's profile in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft; the profile name can differ between boxed FSX, Steam Edition and side-by-side installations. FSX will compile a fresh cache when it starts.
  5. Test with a fresh FSX configuration. Rename FSX.cfg in the relevant FSX or FSX-SE folder beneath %APPDATA%\Microsoft. Let the simulator generate another file, then test before restoring display tweaks. Keep the old file so you can recover settings later.
  6. Restore damaged default files. Back up any deliberately modified textures first. Steam users can verify the installed files; boxed FSX users can run the repair option from their original installation media. Verification can replace altered defaults, but it does not necessarily remove stray injector files or correct an active add-on scenery layer.
  7. Reset graphics-driver overrides. Return forced anti-aliasing, filtering and texture options to application-controlled settings. If the fault began after a driver change and survives every earlier test, use a clean, stable driver installation rather than adding more FSX texture replacements.

Is blue land really a water-texture fault?

Blue land with waves or reflections is usually a scenery-classification problem, not a bad water bitmap.

FSX uses landclass to select ground types, vector scenery to define coastlines and water polygons, and terrain mesh for elevation. Photoreal packages can add their own water masks. A malformed polygon, bad exclusion or incorrectly ordered scenery layer can therefore tell FSX that dry land is a lake or sea.

Disable the scenery layer covering that location and retest. Replacing global water textures will only change the appearance of the wrongly placed water; it will not restore the coastline.

Does lowering Water Effects solve the problem?

Lowering Water Effects is a useful diagnostic test, but it is not a complete repair for missing or misclassified terrain.

If the blue corruption disappears at a lower water-effects level, concentrate on shaders, DirectX mode, injectors and driver settings. Should I install replacement water textures?

Install replacement textures only when FSX is rendering water correctly and the remaining complaint is its colour or style.

Back up the existing files and avoid mixing several water packages, because each installer may overwrite the previous set. Once scenery boundaries, shaders and default files have been ruled out, an alternative FSX water-texture set can change the appearance, but it cannot repair blue land caused by a faulty water polygon.
