Use a joystick with GeForce NOW flight sims: learn what works, how XInput mapping works, and why HOTAS, throttles and pedals may fail.
You generally cannot use a conventional USB flight joystick or HOTAS directly with GeForce NOW. The service sends supported gamepad, keyboard and mouse input to the cloud session, but it does not provide normal DirectInput or raw USB passthrough. A joystick works only if it presents—or is mapped—as a supported gamepad.
Why does GeForce NOW not detect my flight stick?
GeForce NOW cannot see most flight sticks because their USB device information never reaches the remote computer running the simulator. Windows may identify the joystick perfectly on your local PC while the cloud session sees no controller at all.
This commonly affects HOTAS sets, standalone throttles, rudder pedals and older DirectInput joysticks. Installing the manufacturer’s driver or calibrating the device can fix local problems, but it cannot create USB passthrough inside GeForce NOW. First, verify local joystick detection and calibration so you know the hardware itself is working.
An Xbox-compatible label is not enough on its own. The controller must expose an input mode that the GeForce NOW client recognises as a standard supported gamepad.
What are the workable joystick options?

For cloud play, a hardware gamepad mode is the cleanest choice. Virtual-controller mapping is useful when the joystick has no such mode, but GeForce NOW client or operating-system changes can affect whether the virtual pad is accepted.
How can I map a joystick for GeForce NOW?
- Connect and test the joystick locally. On Windows, open the Game Controllers panel with
joy.cpland confirm that every required axis moves through its full range without drifting. - Select gamepad or XInput mode if available. Some controllers provide a hardware switch or a documented mode setting. Reconnect the device after changing modes.
- Create one virtual gamepad if necessary. On a Windows host, controller-mapping software can translate DirectInput joystick axes and buttons into an Xbox-style virtual controller. Start the mapper before opening GeForce NOW.
- Map the essential controls. Use a gamepad stick for pitch and roll, another stick axis or triggers for rudder, and a spare analogue channel or buttons for throttle. A POV hat can become the directional pad.
- Restart the GeForce NOW session. Controllers created after the stream starts are not always picked up. If necessary, close both the game session and client before reconnecting.

Do not make the same physical control send both a virtual gamepad axis and keyboard commands. That produces doubled inputs, sudden control jumps and throttle changes that appear to be simulator faults.
Why are the controls detected but behaving incorrectly?

Can I use a throttle and rudder pedals as well?
Separate throttles and pedals are not passed through as native flight-simulation devices. A host-side mapper may combine them into one virtual gamepad, but all the hardware then shares that gamepad’s limited axes, triggers and buttons.
Pitch and roll normally consume one stick, while yaw can use the other stick’s horizontal axis. A throttle can use the remaining vertical axis, leaving the triggers for independent toe brakes. This arrangement is workable for basic flying, but compromises camera control, multi-engine throttles, mixture, propeller pitch and other analogue functions.
Device-specific displays, LEDs and force-feedback output also cannot communicate normally with the remote simulator. For a full HOTAS, separate throttle quadrant, rudder pedals and analogue toe brakes, we recommend running the simulator locally.

If an XInput or virtual controller reaches MSFS 2024, configure it under the simulator’s control settings as a gamepad. If no controller appears there, the problem is on the host-to-GeForce-NOW side; changing sensitivity or dead-zone settings inside the simulator will not make an unsupported joystick appear.
For casual flying, a supported gamepad or carefully mapped virtual controller is adequate. For precise fixed-wing flying, helicopters or aircraft requiring several analogue controls, a local installation remains the dependable choice.
